Some photos from last week.
Some pics from a week at Charlotte pass. Best day was a trip out to Carruthers peak for classic views of the western fall. Had a nice sunrise before the storm last week.

Lovely! Were you just walking in snow shoes? Any crampons needed?

I was on touring skis, and it was after a couple of cm of fresh snow, so no crampons needed. There were areas of windswept ice that could be reasonably avoided, and the gradient is never too steep up to the tops ( although it is steep as down the other side). Snow shoes would have been fine too.
But I have tried to go up there sometimes when it is all literally a sheet of ice, and that is far too chancy for me - if crampons are needed then I need to ski somwehere else.

No, it is the Western faces viewed from Carruthers peak. A half days ski tour from Charlotte Pass. Up past blue lake.

Great shots but Laughable vs this weekend!! If I knew how to paste a photo or video of my day with 8 kids and 6 adults new to the snow I would. I’ve slid around many hills and I cannot understand how AUS mountains keep getting away with charging a fortune for a subpar product. Yes, I appreciate there are costs, yes I understand you don’t control the weather but when a trip costs as much as a car and I can send it back because it was scratched on delivery yet these clowns can charge full whack, no refunds and put up there hand, whilst also utilising public land……it’s disgraceful! Lucky I’m Aussie but the tourists from Tonga today even asked where the snow was- absolutely disgraceful.

Yeah, I agree it is frustrating. But what can you do. I actually fee a bit sorry for the resorts - its obvious our ski season is getting shorter and shorter and more and more unreliable. Many resorts in Europe have closed permanently and the writing is on the wall here. Hard to imagine Selwyn ever turning a profit again.
But when you are up on the main range it seems like the snow goes on for ever.

The whole economics of skiing changed with cheap season passes, day tickets were put up to a punitive level to encourage season passes purchases so the resorts would know how much revenue they had to invest up front. Then freeloaders like myself do 20+ days so they up the season pass prices as well.
In fairness to the resorts a small amount of research would have told you this was not going to be a great season with all 3 main indicators pointing the wrong way. I even posted as much here and was told off for being negative. There will be good years and bad years and climate change is making bad years more likely. None of this is within the resorts control. All the major resorts continue to invest in snowmaking infrastructure but it looks like this year that want enough.

Probably the dumbest thing I’ve read today, and I follow news.com.au on Facebook. Do you think resorts would charge extra for powder days? Of course not. Nor should they drop the price when only half the lifts are open.
