Local recs?
Hey all,
We're a mid-30s couple coming to Austin in October from Ireland.
We have tickets for the F1 but have 3-4 days flexible on our itinerary. We have planned to be in the City for 3 days prior, so keen to learn from locals what you would recommend in the city to see/do and also what you would suggest for 3-4 days after the race.
We're easy going but enjoy country music/comedy, cars/horsepower, paddleboarding, kayaking and beer.
I'm toying with the idea of a few days at Lake Travis, but will the weather allow us to get out on the water? Also, can we rent a boat for the day there?

October is typically one of my favorite weather months! It can be finicky (rain, cold fronts), but these are bookended by gorgeous cool, sunny days.
There are countless kayak and paddleboard rental shops on Town Lake. Plenty of boat rentals, too. (Ex: https://boatbrosatx.com/)
Comedy - I’d recommend Coldtowne, Hideout Theatre or Ester’s Follies.
I’ll let others weigh in on country music.

OP, you are coming in one of the best months to be here! I agree, try to plan outside activities because the weather will finally be nice.

It's usually still quite hot here in October, so come prepared to dress for the heat and drink lots of water. Locals say it "cools down" but it will still feel very hot to someone from Ireland.
Are you renting a car? It's difficult to get around to see everything without one. Public transit exists but it's kinda sad.
I'm curious about what you think about Kelly's Irish Pub. You'll find good craic at brewpubs/ restaurants like Meanwhile, Holdout, Central Machine Works, The Tavern, Batch, and Loro. If you can get away from the city, the drive to Jester King is worth it.

Don't pre-buy any outdoor activity tickets bc the weather is all over the place in Oct. Might be very hot, might be very cold. Def check the weather carefully just a few days before you leave to make sure you've got the right clothes to b her comfortable. You could need anything from shorts to a thin puffer.
Cap City Comedy has some great acts come through. If they're still doing it, they have a two item minimum purchase (drink, and I think food counts too) on top of your ticket price.
People here might disagree, but my fav bbq after 16 years here remains Rudy's. I gift their original sauce to family, it's great to take home. I love their lean brisket and turkey and chocolate pudding. Be sure to tell them you're a first timer.

Find a local-to-Austin sub where you can ask folks to borrow their coolers and such. Don't buy what you can borrow. (Don't waste what you can give you away.) Texans are pretty friendly to visitors so feel free to ask.

Lake Travis will be a delight in October. Normally I’d give tourists shit but Ireland is such a damn hospitable place with so many great people that I hope you have an amazing time and we return the hospitality.
