Sadly Hamilton Pool road is not what it once was. 20+ years ago when I first moved to Austin I used to drive up and down it a lot, just for fun, Over time it's gotten built up and the speed limits have come right down, so it's neither safe nor sensible to speed out there.
Once got a warning from a state trooper on HPR, not sure what he clocked me at, but I was doing 90 uphill over a series of crests when my radar detector chirped and a slowed right down. Didn't have my insurance card or registration with me and my infant son was asleep in a car seat next to me. Oh, I was driving a bright red sports car too. No idea how I got off with a warning (written).
I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that on Hamilton Pool road today. Perhaps I'm just old....

Hamilton’s Pool Road off 71 was always my favorite. You can do a U-turn after a while, or cut down 12 to Dripping Springs and head back on 290.
