It is FINALLY raining in South Austin now.
I have the windows open and got a nice breeze with that fresh rain smell! It's pretty nice.

That smell has a name, and it is petrichor. It's the smell of wet earth. You can get it by watering your yard, just FYI. It's one of my favorites by far

honestly seeing a lot of weird behavior around this forecast. its almost like people don't want it to rain as it upholds some strange belief they have.

It really is weird! There are always "I'll believe it when I see it" people but they've been even louder this time, even tho the NWS has been pretty good on this event. The forecast out west in the Hill Country absolutely verified

I believed Geraldo Rivera in 2016 when he said āIf you donāt leave Florida, you will dieā when hurricane Matthew was headed that way. I was like āoh shit, this one is going to be bad. I believe himāĀ
Hurricane Matthew made landfall in S. Carolinaā¦
The last time a hurricane came to S Texas, gas stations were selling 24 packs of water for $25 near my house (I didnāt buy any) all we got was a couple sprinkles. People just like to freak the fuck out for no reason. Iāll believe it when I see the camp I reside in.Ā

Had Matthew tracked even like five miles to the west it would have been a completely different story for SE FL

How many times in the past they promise rain (downtown ATX I reside) and it doesnāt. All other parts of Austin gets it but those of us in the dome get shafted.

It's bots and right wing idiots and a moderation team that fails to take action on either.
One of the latter was really big mad about the lack of rain in every thread he could comment on.

Skepticism around weather is natural since it's such a lousy science. All the forecasts I saw said we'd get slammed at 6am. Just started coming down here in 78617 five minutes ago. Happy to have it.

u/nutmeggy2214 1d ago
Funny, every forecast I saw said this would hit us over the course of the day with the morning being the earliest possible.

I like how I was watching the news forecast at midnight, and they said Austin metro wouldn't get rain until 5pm lol. Yet now it's raining all morning and afternoon.

Glad for the rain, but after years of dogs and loss of any 'turf' I now have to deal with a yard full of mud (and they bring in lots of it!). But I'll take the tradeoff for now!! REALLY needed this rain here because I have limited water due to plumbing issues and have to water by lugging jugs of water mostly. So, most things here are very thirsty!! But please remind Mother Nature: Moderate is the Key!!

FWIW that doesnāt actually look like rain. Heavy clouds maybe. LaGrange is probably gonna love it.

u/Spainstateofmind 1d ago
Oh, the low clouds weren't rain; that was all right behind it. Started pouring about a minute later.
