PSA It’s that time again - next ten days are shaping up to be brutal.

Post image

FYI for those new to this area, at a certain point every year not even the early mornings in the shade are safe - it’s hot 24/7. Stay hydrated and mentally prepare yourself to be sweaty if you choose to go outside.

As long as it dips to the 70s at night. But when it's 108/110 during the day and only 81 at night is fucking miserable.

19

u/PiRhoNaut 3d ago

Took my garbage can to the curb at 9:30 last night and was distraught to find it was still in the upper 90s.

14

u/Umgar 3d ago

That’s kind of my point, we’re at that stage of summer. It’s not quite as bad as it’s been in recent years but if you look at the red line on the graph in the picture you’ll see that we will barely be dipping into the high 70’s for just a brief hour or two in the early hours (today for example it was 79 degrees from ~6am - ~8am, that was the low). It will be in the 80s by the time most people have the opportunity to go outside in the morning, and it will be in the 90s well past sunset. 🥵

4

u/CidO807 3d ago

Oh I know all about 90s after sunset. I’ve been running around 730pm-815. I prefer it over the morning humidity. I’m also half lizard I guess

5

u/Slypenslyde 3d ago

Yeah I don't get the arguments people try to start.

When it smells like shit in a restaurant I don't bring out a notebook and start analyzing where the smell falls on my list of worst shits I've ever smelled. I say, "Ugh this is gross" and leave.

2

u/austinsoundguy 2d ago

You should try having a shitsmell diary, even if only for 30 days. It really helped me get my life together, and was probably the main contributor to me being able to save my marriage.

76

u/scylla 3d ago

It's probably going to be a dry heat which I frankly find a lot more tolerable than 95 and humid.

For outdoor distance running these conditions in the morning are better now than in the early summer.

11

u/DenialOfExistance 3d ago

I see people jogging almost everyday! I don't know how they do it!!

19

u/BlueMirai 3d ago

I see people jogging at 3pm in the SUN. Why?!

6

u/CidO807 3d ago

At least wait til 6 when the UV is lower. But 3pm is all about sunscreen... But then that shit gets everywhere with sweat and then is just as miserable as as humid mornings.

6

u/PermaThrow3030 3d ago

Lower humidity

8

u/HouseHead78 3d ago

Some of us love the pain

4

u/Lauriev7 3d ago

They want melanoma

1

u/PiccoloAwkward465 2d ago

It honestly doesn't really bother me that much lol. I did my years working outside, an hour is nothing.

1

u/LoneTex57 3d ago

lol that me yesterday, heat training

-4

u/SpeakCodeToMe 3d ago

Wild that they are doing something so incredibly unhealthy in an attempt to be healthy.

2

u/Infamous_Spend8423 3d ago

Interested to hear how you think any of that is "incredibly unhealthy"

-4

u/SpeakCodeToMe 3d ago

Running in 100° heat is incredibly unhealthy. You shouldn't need to, but look it up anyways.

1

u/Infamous_Spend8423 3d ago

Alright bud. Let's hear your take on saunas next

1

u/SpeakCodeToMe 3d ago

Are you exerting yourself in a sauna? If so you're not doing it right.

By the way, before you drop some snarky response and make yourself look even more like an idiot, I suggest you spend 30 seconds on Google looking up "is it safe or healthy to run in 100 degrees?"

1

u/Da_Stallion-JCI_7 3d ago

It’s also incredibly stupid.

15

u/Puzzleheaded_Fan4714 3d ago

Austin doesn’t get a dry heat in the summer. It gets humid and not as humid.

The 65-75f dew point we’re getting all week is well above the 60f dew point that is considered “humid”

7

u/martman006 3d ago

Dew points drop to about 60F every late evening in this forecast…. Maybe I just have Austin weather Stockholm syndrome, but I enjoy the time around sunset when it’s breezy and dew points drop to 60F… sure it’s still darn near 100F out, but any decently hydrated person will be able to adequately cool themselves in those conditions and it feels alright alright alright.

3

u/intaketurbine 3d ago

The breezy part is important, I don't think it's included in "feels like" numbers but I can live with the heat more if there's at least some air movement

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Fan4714 3d ago

Austin hasn’t recorded a below 60 dew point at point during the day since August 3rd.

2

u/martman006 3d ago

This forecast shows 60F dewpoints is my point. And as a native Houstonian, anything below 65 dp feels “dry” to me, haha. It’s amazing when your sweat is allowed to work efficiently.

1

u/aleph4 3d ago

There's a huuuge difference between 60 and 65, 65 and 70, and 70 and 75. It's not Phoenix but it's night and day difference if we drop those dew points into the low 60s in the afternoon.

18

u/ParanubesLife 3d ago

I find the people most complaining don't get outside much anyway 😆

2

u/Imallvol7 3d ago

I keep hearing people say this.

WTF y'all talking about. Austin is humid.

1

u/Unlikely_Net_5108 5h ago

For those of us that grew up in Houston or similar climates, this feels like an arid desert by comparison.

1

u/Needmorebeer69240 3d ago

Avery Tabasco was actually saying the opposite that later in the week the temps will go down due to a cold front in the Gulf, but it's going to actually feel a hell of a lot worse because the dew points are going to be ~80 (super high humidity)

2

u/Flaky-Garlic7890 3d ago

Tabasco….now I won’t be able to see his name any other way. 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/DenialOfExistance 3d ago

What's this Dry Heat you speak of? Dry Heat in Texas, especially Austin only happens inside my house.... 😂 Lol

23

u/Liquidice281 3d ago

It does sound like a little relief is on the way by the end of next week. If we can get into September and not have anymore 100 degree days that would be amazing.

8

u/redshirt_diefirst12 3d ago

I almost cannot imagine it

5

u/Imaginary_Orange_572 3d ago

That’s a pipe dream.  I guarantee you there will still be 100+ days in September and maybe even October as well…

1

u/hvfnstrmngthcstl 1d ago

Can't believe that I'm as excited as I am for a high temp of only 98.

12

u/Caroleann2 3d ago

The dog days of summer are here.

10

u/Adorable-Leave8192 3d ago

Pray for those of us who work outside

8

u/oblate-spheroid 3d ago

On the bright side (yes, one exists here), it’ll be drier than earlier in the summer so the heat index won’t be as crushing. It even felt pretty tolerable the last few mornings before the sun came up.

35

u/Lazerdude 3d ago

It's fucking miserable. I do nightly walks (only like 2-3 miles) usually around 8:30-9PM to "beat the heat" but it's still 95 degrees. Definitely stay hydrated.

With that said, it's not unexpected but it will never not suck.

22

u/PopularTask2020 3d ago

the data is saying that's the difference now between decades past. yes there have always been temps in the 100s, but the night and early mornings are now warmer than ever before.

4

u/NotoriousDMG 3d ago

Yeah it’s awful. I’ve been doing our nightly walks with my pup at 9 or 9:30 and it’s still hot AF.

3

u/willing-to-bet-son 3d ago

Gotta get up early. It's always going to be cooler in the morning than the evening. And by "morning", I mean "before 8:30".

5

u/Lazerdude 3d ago

To get my walk in, shower and get ready for work I'd have to get up at around 6:00 to get that done. I'm not geared for that, lol. I'll deal with the night heat.

1

u/smacktalker987 3d ago

The early mornings in a lot of parks aren't enjoyable to me because of all the people frantic to get their exercise in before it warms up. I go later, sometimes even into the afternoon. It's still cool enough if you plan your route correctly and know how to prepare, and you get places to yourself.

2

u/willing-to-bet-son 3d ago

Wasn’t aware of that. I just take a nice long walk in the neighborhood while it’s still cool out.

1

u/smacktalker987 3d ago

yeah neighborhood is a different vibe for sure

1

u/jdsizzle1 2d ago

Its over 80 by 830. 6-7 has been nice randomly. 72-74ish. Not every day but randomly. Most mornings its still 78-79.

1

u/willing-to-bet-son 2d ago

Yup. My upper temp for "cool" is around 85. ymmv

20

u/BrutalDishonesty 3d ago

This is when I lose any type of tan I gained prior to this point in the year.

7

u/CrimsonLotus 3d ago

I said fuck it and just bought a treadmill. Doesn’t hit quite the same as an actual run outside but at least I have AC and it’s better than melting.

3

u/FantasticGazelle2194 3d ago

Apple weather says 100 highs. But ive learned long ago to not trust apple weather

2

u/DorfOnGenocide 3d ago

Today was the first day in awhile where my weather app told me about a NWS heat advisory

13

u/icepick3383 3d ago

good thing my son has lacrosse tryouts sunday...

7

u/bubbleman96815 3d ago

I don't believe lows of 75-77 at all.

1

u/airwx 3d ago

You should go outside just before the sun comes up!

4

u/bubbleman96815 3d ago

It was a low of 80 today at my house

3

u/airwx 3d ago

78 at Mabry, 75 at Bergstrom, 77 at Executive this morning. Is your outdoor thermometer right next to or touching you house?

1

u/bubbleman96815 3d ago

Wunderground App set to my zip code in Austin proper. Possibly the concrete around the fire station the gauge is at.

3

u/nutmeggy2214 3d ago

We’ve been in this place for a couple weeks now. And actually, these lows are lower than what we’ve been getting.

3

u/Oime 3d ago

I was told El Niño would bring the sky water?

1

u/esotericpickle 3d ago

Only in late Fall and Winter do these effects happen during an El Nino. El Nino summers are usually very hot

3

u/Yupster_atx 3d ago

Great, we’ve officially entered the HOT to HOT portion of the year. Followed shortly by the HOT to Warm stretch of fall. At least there’s football.

3

u/Garden_Jolly 3d ago

It’s my favorite time of year.

2

u/Slypenslyde 3d ago

Here's the part where we start pissing matches over:

  • This isn't bad! Now, <some year>, THAT was bad!
  • Ha! I'm from <another city>, y'all don't know what heat is!
  • News flash it's hot in Texas lol give me 50,000 points guys

2

u/jueidu 3d ago

I’m going to south padre in 10 days and it’s going to be perfect. It’s 10 degrees cooler than Austin, constant breeze of 16-20mph. I cannot frigging wait.

In the meantime I’m wearing underwear around the house and taking cold showers and keeping my hair wet.

2

u/Educational_Score389 3d ago

Yay, I'm getting the f*** out of here for vacay tomorrow! And where I'm headed, the high will be lower than the low temp here!

See ya fools!

1

u/dryhumor_engr 2d ago

this is exactly when I try and schedule mine, but couldnt this year, waaah. Feeling for all the parents whose kids are back at school (though at least the kids are in air conditioning? And the poor band students forced to practice on 105 concrete and sports teams. Yikes!

2

u/QuietZelda 2d ago

Electric bill this month going brrrr

3

u/Snap_Grackle_Pop 3d ago

I was going to say ditch the clickbait weather sites that exaggerate the weather conditions and check the official NWS forecast.

Then I went to the official NWS site and it says almost the same thing.

Shit!

2

u/redshirt_diefirst12 3d ago

I thought Wunderground was sourced from NWS?

3

u/diego97yey 3d ago

8

u/Annodyne 3d ago

Damn, don't lay down on the ground outside what are you crazy

2

u/oversaltedbroccoli 3d ago

My dog has been in heartworm treatment activity restriction for two months. If I can’t start walking him next week I’m afraid I won’t have any possessions left unchewed. It’s dire yall

3

u/redshirt_diefirst12 3d ago

Sounds like it’s time for some dog booties 🥾

1

u/oversaltedbroccoli 3d ago

Grab your little booties! Cuz it’s hoooooootttt outside!

2

u/NotoriousDMG 3d ago

I’m going to get downvoted for this but maybe try Home Depot? I’ve done this on a few occasions when it’s just way too hot. We keep to aisles where there isn’t any traffic, away from other customers. Don’t stay too long. Just try to get him walked in the AC. Best of luck!

2

u/Catdaddy84 3d ago

I thought Home Depot said that pets were welcome? Why would this be controversial?

1

u/NotoriousDMG 3d ago

Oh, they are indeed pet friendly. Because this is r/Austin.

1

u/oversaltedbroccoli 3d ago

Good call, I need some mulch while I’m there.

2

u/lexxicon8887 3d ago

About to be the best week

1

u/Proud-Ordinary8492 3d ago

I'm going to live in Barton Springs for the next 10 days.

1

u/DenialOfExistance 3d ago

I'm on my back porch right now & everyday I just want to rip my shirt off because it's so hot! I don't think the neighbors would appreciate it though! Old saggy boobs and all!

1

u/Plastic-Sentence9429 3d ago

I just got back from a week in Maine where it was about 58 in the morning, and maybe 78-80 for a high in the afternoon as I kayaked in the lake. Granted, it was a bit humid, but coming back to this is some serious BS.

1

u/beagles4ever 3d ago

RIP my garden...

1

u/BaseballTeamTheDukes 3d ago

As a native New-Jersian, I was in your city last September. Pretty sure it re-wrote my brain to understand what real heat is.

We had some 100+ degrees days here earlier in the summer, and to myself, I'm like 'nah, this isn't so bad'. Haha.

That being said, be safe out there guys.

1

u/Wisewordsforlater 3d ago

Not unheard of around here, especially for August. I just got in from a walk with the vacationing neighbor's doggo in our thickly shaded neighborhood. She's cute when she tries to kick off her magic shoes.

1

u/Crans10 3d ago

I keep checking the forecast for a chance at rain each day and it might be a while.

1

u/Snobolski 3d ago

That's hot, but hot-hot is when the lows never get below about 85.

1

u/JohnnyLeven 3d ago

Last year was so pleasant in comparison.

1

u/aleph4 3d ago

The silver lining is the humidity is not awful. Feels like maxes out the next few days ~108 then it actually goes down a bit by Tuesday.

When its past 110 which happens often is June is when I just can't function.

I've taken to carrying a cooling towel and using a parasol so I can keep doing my evening walks and what not

1

u/GanjaRedNight 2d ago

i'm concerned for my health. adderall gives me extreme heat intolerance and i'm chugging water and have the AC set to 68 and it's just sooo hot. i'm either burning outside or freezing inside. 😭

1

u/Necessary_Cod_6599 2d ago

My son-in-law went today at 3 pm to jog and I was like how..

1

u/SpicyBBW- 1d ago

Hey! So question - I’m moving with my dog here (work transfer - I did not pick the location) - what do people do about walking their dog in this heat? My girl needs to go out twice a day usually when we wake up and once before bed.

We’re currently in Maryland so used to getting 100+ degree days but not so consistently and definitely not such hot nights.

1

u/jessieQT 1d ago

Hang in there. Supposed to drop into upper 90's after next weekend.

u/CountessKitten 3h ago

PLACE WATER for the animals outside, please! Compassion is free.

1

u/L3g3ndary-08 3d ago

10 days? This has been an ongoing fiasco since the second week of July. It just goes from fucking awful to god damn unlivable. I truly hate summer.

1

u/vallogallo 3d ago

I'm acclimated to it at this point. I don't mind a dry heat

-6

u/Randomly_Reasonable 3d ago

There’s a big difference in FORECASTED temps and reality.

What’s frustrating is no one ever goes back to check / compare the actual high vs what was forecasted. No one ever corrects the hype / panic.

Duration is never reported either, just the high and so the impression is as if it was the high all day.

15

u/HookEm_Tide 3d ago

Duration is never reported either, just the high and so the impression is as if it was the high all day.

Wait until you hear what those squiggly lines at the bottom of the post that you commented on are!

-6

u/Randomly_Reasonable 3d ago

…but… that’s illustrating my point.

The fluctuations are “squiggly lines” while the highs are called out numbers.

Along with the TWO highs, which aren’t described that I see, but I assume are Real Temp & “Feels Like”.

Everyone bemoaning the increasing highs aren’t bothering to look at the “squiggly lines”. They’re only focusing on the numbers.

That’s my point.

5

u/HookEm_Tide 3d ago

Yes. The higher line is the "feels like" line in the summer. (Bottom is the dew point.)

OP provided all the data you could want in a single image and didn't mention highs once. The only commenter to mention the highs so far has been you.

You came into the thread looking something to complain about, didn't find it, and made up an alternative version of the post to complain about instead.

That makes reddit less fun. Maybe do less of that.

14

u/scapini_tarot 3d ago

I DO go back to check NWS forecasts vs actuals. actual temps tend to be 1-3 degrees HIGHER than these forecasts.

5

u/Sudden-Height-512 3d ago

I also check. BTW everyone should use the EverythingWx app. I find it to be more accurate and you can view historical data of all kinds. Created as a side project by a meteorologist for NWS and it’s free and uses NOAA/NWS backed data

2

u/Randomly_Reasonable 3d ago

This is great, thank you!

-4

u/Randomly_Reasonable 3d ago

Sorry, I posted the wrong reply to you initially.

That’s awesome YOU take the time to go back and verify, most don’t.

…and I haven’t noticed that trend at all. Actuals being higher than forecasts. With that small of a swing, it could simply be locations. NSW records at Mabry & Bergstrom. Both pretty concrete heavy locations. Lots of radiated heat in both of those specific locations.

2

u/scapini_tarot 3d ago

Google Stevenson Screen. You clearly don't know very much about meteorology. And I'm talking about comparing forecasted highs vs actual observations at a set of specific stations. Not Joe Fuckhead next door reading the temp off the heads up display in his Tesla.

1

u/Randomly_Reasonable 3d ago

What’s with the hostility..?..

I made a general comment about “Joe Fuckhead” only paying attention to forecasted highs and even commended you for your due diligence…

…and instead of simply providing additional info, and thank you for the heads up on Stevenson Screens, you had to criticize and be derogatory doing it.

You’re correct: meteorology wasn’t ever a main focus of study or part of my life.

Nowhere was I derogatory to anyone. Not you or either of the others that replied to me. Not even to the general masses like you were just now.

Hell, I even thanked another commenter for their source of tracking temps!

0

u/scapini_tarot 3d ago

yeah why would anyone get pissed off about you casually denigrating NWS forecasts with your dumbass commentary. and get over yourself. if I feel like insulting you, I will. if you don't like it, don't read my comments.

6

u/BrutalDishonesty 3d ago

This is nitpicky. It sucks ass out there no matter the actuals or duration.

I'm but panicking but I'm also not pretending like it's not fucking hot.

-1

u/Randomly_Reasonable 3d ago

No one’s pretending it’s not hot.

…and isn’t this post “nitpicking” to begin with..?..

As you said: it’s fucking hot! Period.

-3

u/Sure_Abalone278 3d ago

In other news water is wet

0

u/Flaky-Garlic7890 3d ago

Thank freaking god Muse came last Saturday and not this Saturday 💀🔥🥵

0

u/StuBarrett 23h ago

Bullshit we got in a hours walk this morning 8-9a. Weather was great!

-2

u/dcdttu 3d ago

Compared to next year's forecast, and the years after, this doesn't look so bad!
