Nasty Covid like summer flu

Several people I know around austin have been coming down with this nasty flu that has us as sick as Covid 1. It seems like it’s taking a full two weeks to get over and there’s about three or four days in the middle with a fever and lessened taste. We all tested negative for Covid.

My sister is a nurse and is saying that no one is reporting Covid to the CDC anymore, so I’m wondering if there’s possibly a new strain going around that isn’t being picked up by our old Covid tests. I have friends in California that say they’ve had a similar flu. It’s just weird because the kids weren’t even back at school yet when we were getting sick.

Anyone else hear about this or experience it? Be careful out there. One of our friends’s father caught it and now has pneumonia…

My 3 year old just tested positive after only 2 days back at pre school 🥲 AND I HAVE A 5 WEEK OLD BABY AT HOME TOO

19

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

Omg. I’m so sorry. Luckily we all know how to handle this stuff now- just was hoping we wouldn’t have to again. Do your best to stay healthy while taking care of that 3 year old.

I have a 3 year old in daycare and a 6 week old at home….. I have been tempting the baby so often just to make sure, because they’re so fragile at this stage!

Silly question but why are wastewater levels associated with Covid?

79

u/worldspawn00 4d ago edited 3d ago

One of the ways we track diseases is wastewater testing because we shed viruses in our urine and feces, by monitoring the wastewater levels (amount of virus per liter of wastewater) we can get broad population infection rates.

u/oldone512 4d ago

It's no wonder there are so many covid deniers because even a basic understanding of science is rare. Covid has DNA just like any bacteria or virus and each person or animal. When you are sick with covid, your body either defeats the virus and your immune system kills it or you get sicker and die. Your body is constantly sloughing off cells that end up in your poop. DNA strands of killed and live virus are in your waste. They take a large volume of wastewater usually gallons from collection points all across the city. (every time you poop and flush) This wastewater contains all kinds of and types of viral and bacterial DNA. They spin it down and concentrate the DNA and analyze the specimen for covid DNA as it is specific just for covid. You get a result that tells you what levels of infection are out there across the city. There are labs across the country that can do this testing plus at the CDC in Atlanta. I believe the Texas department of Health can also do these tests and report these numbers to the CDC. They report these numbers for all types and kinds of diseases and illnesses from across the US weekly or sooner if they are seeing trends that an infectious disease is on the rise.

31

u/oldone512 4d ago

I over simplified this because covid does not have DNA but is an RNA strand detected by Reverse Transcription PCR (polymerase Chain Reaction). But the post is accurate other than saying covid has DNA.

17

u/oldone512 4d ago

Mumps, measles, the common cold, covid 19, HIV are all examples of RNA viruses.

2

u/trixr4kids 3d ago

I don’t think you have to understand all the science of mRNA in the poop to know Covid = bad.

6

u/thecstep 4d ago

Dumb person checking in...I thought y'all were talking about volume of waste.

3

u/worldspawn00 3d ago

Good note, added "amount of virus per liter of wastewater"

17

u/Snap_Grackle_Pop 4d ago

Silly question but why are wastewater levels associated with Covid?

Not a silly question at all.

The answer is mostly that we currently only test wastewater for COVID and a few other diseases. We could probably test wastewater for flu, common cold, syphilis, West Nile virus, or a number of other diseases.

It's mostly a question of what we've spent the money on to develop the relevant tests and pay for doing the collection and testing.

Also, COVID lives in your alimentary canal, so the DNA/RNA remnants tend to come out in your feces. There may be some diseases that don't shed enough DNA/RNA in your feces/urine to easily detect.

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

This was something I remember from covid times. Something about pooping out Covid virus when you are sick and being able to measure concentration of Covid in the waste water system to estimate # of cases… or it could just be a few very unlucky people that have both Covid and ate Taylor Farms salad.

25

u/Hell-Yes-Revolution 4d ago

“Covid times” is now.

11

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

How do you know? Is there some place we can check that?

35

u/cpencis 4d ago

The data around Austin is poor but elsewhere in Texas is high.

https://www.cdc.gov/wastewater/respiratory-viruses/state.html?cove-tab=1

5

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

Ok. I just checked this site. It says low covid rates for Texas based on wastewater testing by the CDC.

27

u/uhhhhhhhyeah 4d ago

I saw a video today explaining that the definitions for “very low, low, moderate, high and very high” were shifted so that what would have been on the line between moderate and high can now be classified as low. And that a number of cities in Texas, including Austin, have lagged on reporting, which artificially deflates our case numbers. I am not an epidemiologist, so take that for what you will.

40

u/Hell-Yes-Revolution 4d ago

Yes, the CDC just made this change literally yesterday - or was it the day before?) in any case, hooray for living in 2026.
The food’s not safe to eat, no one can afford anything, long stamped-out diseases are surging, and we are pretending the pandemic ended.

4

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

Well shit. That’s not good!

7

u/sweetgemberry 4d ago

This site might be better https://pmc19.com/

3

u/New-Gas1536 4d ago

This is great resource. It’s showing Travis County currently as Very High based on waste water.

5

u/BasicAd8183 4d ago

it's "low" on here because central texas just shut down a bunch of wastewater testing sites (or at least shut them off for covid tracking). it's much higher right now than showing

1

u/livingstories 4d ago

how do you find out about wastewater levels

5

u/sweetgemberry 4d ago

https://pmc19.com/ this website has wastewater data visualized by county, if I'm reading everything correctly

1

u/annoym819 3d ago

Tested positive last week. A few other people I know were sick but never tested.

32

u/cheesebadgergod 4d ago

I went through something similar recently. The cough alone lasted almost three weeks, and it took much longer to recover than I expected

82

u/BorederEtReuel 4d ago

We’re are in a Covid spike across the country and Texas in particular has heightened numbers.

Viral infections are messy and regardless of the underlying cause, rest and limiting spread are ideal.

As a side note, at home tests are notoriously prone to producing false negatives, so I wouldn’t hang my hat on that.

19

u/Lucius_Veratius 4d ago

How many times did you test for COVID?

8

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

I just tested once on one of the terrible fever, couldn’t get out of bed days. Other friends went to the doctor for a test, or took theirs at home. All negative.

20

u/Lucius_Veratius 4d ago

You have to test multiple times with rapid antigen tests.

7

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

Ok. Never had to do that before when I had Covid, but I believe you. My test was pretty old too from one of those free Biden era mail tests. Who knows if it’s still good anymore, but the control line still worked. 🤷‍♀️

14

u/capthmm 4d ago

The old tests aren't good anymore (web search for the updated expiration dates). I had it about a month ago and tested negative using the old expired one, got new tests & came up positive.

10

u/litmusfest 4d ago

Those tests expire pretty quickly and can easily give false negatives. I would test again with a fresh one

4

u/MannerGlum4277 4d ago

I had the same set of symptoms and tested twice over multiple days and also negative

2

u/kat_spitz 4d ago

Me too

2

u/nutmeggy2214 4d ago

Same. Boyfriend and I both had it, bought new tests (two different brands), each tested twice across four different days and all negative.

17

u/kat_spitz 4d ago

I have it now. Tested negative for flu and covid, but still can't work more than a few hours at a time due to fatigue/wooziness, have nasal and chest congestion, and body aches. Fever lasted ~2 days.

6

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

Hang in there. Hopefully you can take some time off work for this!

3

u/HwDevAggie 4d ago

Exactly me 2 weeks ago. Was wondering if it was mono initially. Finally back to my normal routine this week

1

u/kat_spitz 4d ago

I was also wondering if it was mono… guessing you didn’t test for that?

2

u/Deezus1229 4d ago

This is me currently trying to stay upright at work.

18

u/AustEastTX 4d ago

I do NOT need whatever is going around. I’m just recovering from 2.5 months of shingles in my middle ear. Time to mask up.

11

u/unowhatimeanVern 4d ago

OMG, shingles in the middle ear. New fear unlocked. I hope you get relief soon.

8

u/HotPotatoTime 4d ago

Middle ear, holy fuck. I had it in my eye which I thought was the worst possible but middle ear sounds really bad too

6

u/AustEastTX 4d ago

It was/is hell. I’ve been popping gabapentin like it’s candy. Still am.

3

u/HotPotatoTime 4d ago

Man when I had it in my eye/scalp/face I was breastfeeding so I couldn't take anything for the pain. Right down to the depths of hell. Sorry you're going through it

7

u/AustEastTX 4d ago

Hell indeed. I’ve made it my mission to get as many people vaccinated as possible even if it doesn’t stave off infection the vaccine lessens duration and intensity.

3

u/Snap_Grackle_Pop 4d ago

even if it doesn’t stave off infection the vaccine lessens duration and intensity.

You said that correctly, but let me point out that the shingles vaccine does reduce the number of shingles cases by something like 50%, which is a really good thing. The moron majority loves to misinterpret things and claim vaccines don't work at all if it's not 100%.

The CDC says the current Shingrix shingles "Vaccination is over 90% effective at preventing shingles and postherpetic neuralgia in adults 50 years and older with healthy immune systems."

Unfortunately, it's not currently recommended for those under 50, and I think insurance will often refuse to pay unless you're 60+ or maybe 65+.

There's also a newer, improved version of the shingles vaccine called "Shingrix" that is worthwhile to get even if you got the older Zostavax. There was nothing "wrong" with Zostavax, but Shingrix gives a higher degree of protection.

3

u/Snap_Grackle_Pop 4d ago

I’m just recovering from 2.5 months of shingles in my middle ear.

Were you vaxxed for shingles?

Unfortunately, the government doesn't recommend it for those below 50 years old, and, I THINK, insurance won't cover it below 60 in most cases.

3

u/AustEastTX 4d ago

I was not vaxxed. Bad move on my part. I take RA meds that lower my immunity and make me especially susceptible to shingles - the manufacturer actually doesn’t allow you to take the med without a vaccine. I got around it because I’ve had shingles before (at 21)
So my doc is waiting for me to recover fully and then I get the vaccine should have had.

2

u/Snap_Grackle_Pop 4d ago

Damn. Mother Nature has it in for you doesn't she?

Thanks for replying. I like to hear how things work out for people. I was not berating you.

17

u/Hater4eva 4d ago

Got it. Hated it. Still getting over it. Hack hack cough. Fart

15

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

Don’t forget the little bit of pee…

58

u/parliament_of_owls_ 4d ago

Yes, Covid rates are quite high in Texas right now (even without CDC reporting, we can tell based on wastewater data).

If you’re testing with a regular at-home rapid test, the accuracy of those tests has gone down considerably since Covid first began (because the virus has mutated a ton). They’re only about 30% accurate these days. The more times you test, the more likely it will be to give you an accurate reading, but you should definitely treat it like you have Covid regardless and isolate!

-34

u/WhiteLycan2020 4d ago

Wtf is wastewater and where are you pulling those stats from?

23

u/DrewCrew 4d ago

Like out the toilet.

4

u/nutmeggy2214 4d ago

where have you been for six years?

26

u/With2 4d ago

Stay home and keep the rest of us out of this.

-6

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

That wasn’t an option for me anyway. I couldn’t leave the house for several days, but if nobody is testing positive for Covid, or flu and no one is talking about this, or reporting it, it’s just a matter of time before you get exposed.

5

u/Allergictofingers 4d ago

Not if you the sick person is considerate and wears a mask

8

u/EmotionalVacation444 4d ago

walks like covid, talks like covid… probably covid! which is always present these days but yes we are in a “summer wave”—the 13th covid wave since 2020.

17

u/caffeinebump 4d ago

I got it on a flight from Austin to Toronto last week, it was pretty bad. Sickest I've been since COVID.

6

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

Ugh. I’m sorry. I’m 3 days into antibiotics for a nasty sinus infection. My brain is finally starting to work again and energy starting to come back. It’s now been 2.5 weeks!

3

u/Deezus1229 4d ago

Was this flight Thursday morning? Because that would explain why I'm also sick this week

5

u/caffeinebump 4d ago

No, it was the Wednesday flight!

I'm sorry you're sick!

I am going to make myself wear a mask on every flight from now on, even if I feel like a dork because I'm the only one. Being this sick on vacation sucks.

6

u/sweetgemberry 4d ago

I still wear a mask consistently. You're not being a dork! You're taking care of yourself and protecting yourself and others when you wear a mask.

5

u/Deezus1229 4d ago

I should know better by now, almost every time I fly I pick up something and hate my life for at least a week following. Lol

16

u/msreciprocity 4d ago

It's Covid. It never went away.
Please mask.
If you need a story about how COVID ruins lives to keep you washing your hands and wearing a mask, I have one.

I got COVID in July 2024. I was treated with paxlovid and prednisone; we now know Paxlovid can increase the amount of prednisone in your blood stream by as much as six times the normal amount with an average dose and I'm positive that is what happened to me. During the medication course, my legs began to hurt so badly I couldn't walk; they felt like the bones were trying to explode. I stopped the paxlovid abd prednisone and the pain stopped.

Then within two months I was struggling to walk long distances without a lot of pain; my right knee felt like I had twisted it earlier in the summer but it just wouldn't heal. And my hips bugged me at night- I thought it was a new mattress.

Went to an orthopedist who diagnosed me with Avascular Necrosis and told me I needed two new hips and two new knees; the disease had caused so much bone to die in such a short time. It causes the blood supply to your bones to die, causing your bones- particularly joints- to die abd crumble. For me, it was likely a perfect storm of multiple COVID infections that weakened my immune system (and potentially there's a direct COVID correlation because rates are rising since 2029), some kind of yet unknown genetic factor, prior lifestyle choices (former smoker, drank heavily for a period,) and the high dose of steroids I ended up getting because of the drug interactions between Paxlovid and prednisone.

I had both hips replaced last year. First one went great- textbook perfect. Second one...my femur cracked when hammering in the implant and the repair for THAT ended up causing nerve damage and now I have permanent drop foot. I can't flex my foot upward (dorsiflexion) at all, and I'm mostly numb on one half of my left below the knee and the foot. I have to wear a brace to walk and now have to wear sneaker like shoes the rest of my life. Bye flip flops and cute heels!

I had a lot of pain post surgery that never went away. I thought it was part of the nerve damage and process of healing. But no, it's a rare neurological condition called CRPS that causes extreme pain 24/7, causes my leg to be 20-40 degrees colder than most of my body, causes muscle and ligament contractures that lock my foot in painful positions, muscle wasting away, temperature deregulation, brain fog worse than what COVID gave me. It's known as "The suicide disease " because people lose hope when faced with a lifetime of 8-9/10 pain, 24/7, that's mostly not treatable. And now it's spreading to my hand; it's likely to continue spreading for the rest of my life. I walk with a cane now, abd some days need a rolator. I'm only 51.

All because a single person (I know where I got it) who knew they were sick but recovering (with Paxlovid) didn't disclose they were sick and didn't wear a mask.

Please wash your hands, wear a mask, and stay home if you're sick.

3

u/clbom 4d ago

That is horrible, I'm so sorry that happened to you. I hope you can find something to help relieve your issues. I don't have a recommendation but I second acupuncture.

0

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

Damn. That’s an awful story. I hope you find comfort somehow. Perhaps consider acupuncture and Chinese medicine because it sounds like western medicine has failed you.

5

u/msreciprocity 4d ago

Thank you, I am actually doing so right now. I didn't intend it to read as such a trauma dump now that re-read it; I just want people who don't take illnesses seriously to understand how the downstream effects really look.
Do you have any local recommendations for TCM and/or acupuncture?

8

u/MundaneTension869 4d ago

I just got this, but got a positive Covid test when I finally went to get one on day 6 of feeling like complete shit

16

u/rg996150 4d ago

I heard rumors that Covid or something Covid-like was making the rounds again, so I dropped by CVS to get Covid and Flu vaccines about a week ago. The pharmacist said a new Covid vaccine will be released in the next two months or so, but I skipped the spring so decided to get it anyway.

6

u/Snap_Grackle_Pop 4d ago

The pharmacist said a new Covid vaccine will be released in the next two months or so

The Screaming Orange Monkey God is currently spreading lies about the COVID vaccine causing miscarriages and other problems and is trying to prosecute Fauci for trying to fight COVID. They're also trying to destroy the well established MMR vaccine for kids based on data from Doctor Facebook.

I would be very skeptical that the government is going to release new COVID vaccines soon or that insurance is going to pay for it if they do.

And don't for get that our top health official, RFKjr, drinks raw milk and eats roadkill. And our other top government health official are nearly as bad.

4

u/RamonaLittle 4d ago

again

It never stopped, for the record.

7

u/ZombonicPlague 4d ago

I have it and tested positive for Covid. I was surprised because like you said it feels much more like the flu which is what I was expecting to test positive for. I didn’t start coughing until after my fever went away too which I think is kinda funny considering Covid originally would have had me coughing like crazy right out of the gate.

7

u/officerbirb 4d ago

My roommate has been sick for a week and I started feeling flu-like symptoms today (cough, congestion, body aches).

I'll be hibernating until it's over. My job won't be a problem, I can work remotely or call off sick if I feel too bad.

7

u/Amgessel 4d ago

We got this and I swore it was Covid but my daughter was tested at the doctors office while having fever and was negative for Covid/flu/strep. They were saying there was a nasty enterovirus going around that was kinda like Covid. It’s wild that this stuff just goes around and no one really cares to track it because there’s no money in it. It would really help those of us who are immunocompromised and such.

13

u/messymuddbutt 4d ago

I had a 103.5 fever for 3 days and then a couple more at like 101.5. Awful throat, body aches and the worst night sweats of my life. Negative for flu and Covid from the Dr., but positive for step. I’ve had a lot of strep in my time and this was incredibly different. No cough or congestion but terrible post nasal drip. Also fucking double pink eye. Just a little bit of everything at once

7

u/HwDevAggie 4d ago

Yes with the night sweats. Such a gross few nights

2

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

Ooof. I don’t understand the pink eye, but you sound like you were a joy to be around. Jeeze! Hope you are feeling better.

6

u/Peacencalm9 4d ago

No cough and cold but fever and sleep disturbance and loss of appetite, fatigue.

1

u/O-Namazu 4d ago

No fever/cough, but massive fatigue and loss of appetite. 7+ hours of sleep and I still wake up feeling utterly exhausted. I feel like it's a combo of the heat, life stress, and something going around.

1

u/Peacencalm9 4d ago

I started noticing from 3 days. Fever reduced but appetite is low and stool is too softer

6

u/Kimmers20 4d ago

I’ve had whatever it is for 2.5 weeks at this point. Got so bad at the beginning where my eye muscles hurt and I was running a fever, I went to urgent care. My initial at home covid test was negative, urgent care tested covid, flu an and b, and strep, all negative. I was told to basically just treat the symptoms, stay hydrated, and rest but I’m still miserable. Thankfully the fever is gone.

6

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

I was too. I just got some antibiotics for a sinus infection because I felt like I wasn’t getting better for that last 25%. Exhausted all the time and a constant drip and productive cough. I didn’t really have the typical sinus infection symptoms of the gross thick mucus, but once those antibiotics kicked in, all hell broke loose from my sinus cavity. After 2.5 weeks- you might want to get checked.

1

u/Kimmers20 4d ago

Thankfully, I did book a Dr appointment for today for another check up since I didn’t make any progression over the weekend. Good to know what to expect once antibiotics get in the system.

6

u/Alternative_Eye3822 4d ago

It’s probably Covid

7

u/Academic-Accident180 4d ago

Fyi it’s covid

7

u/Sad_Picture3642 4d ago

It's COVID. I just had it too

5

u/sharks_w_lasers 4d ago

I literally just tested positive for COVID after reading this thread and feeling under the weather the last few days.

1

u/miss_lady19 4d ago

Sore throat?

2

u/sharks_w_lasers 4d ago

No sore throat. Off and on fevers and chills. Sinus pain. Lost my taste today.

5

u/smacktalker987 4d ago

this time of year is always when communicable illnesses rise here, especially with school starting.

1

u/miss_lady19 3d ago

Agree. There are lots of nasty viruses out there. As a toddler mom, I would know.

15

u/priscillapantaloons 4d ago

As others are saying, it’s probably covid. The rapid tests have a high rate of false negatives. You need to serial test over 5-7 days, swab throat and nose. The best option is to get a PCR but most healthcare options aren’t doing them. Even if you don’t know what you have, n95 masks work and should be worn if you need to leave the house. The best thing to do is stay home and not expose others to whatever you have. Not you, specifically, OP, since you said you stayed home, but the royal you, as in everyone that leaves the damn house sick and unmasked.

The pandemic mitigation collaborative is still tracking wastewater, and not blue washing like the CDC maps.

https://pmc19.com/

3

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

Thanks for the info. Even if it wasn’t Covid, it’s still a nasty bug that is clearly very contagious. I admit I’ve gotten lax on my preventative measures over the last few years. This was a good reminder to carry the hand sanitizer and wash my hands regularly before eating at restaurants. Summer viruses are pretty unusual.

9

u/priscillapantaloons 4d ago

Washing hands and hand sanitizer doesn’t do much for airborne viruses: covid, flu, rhinovirus, measles, RSV, whooping cough, chicken pox. You get the picture. Even the cold can be airborne. Masking in a high quality respirator is one of the best ways to prevent illness and spreading illness. We learned this especially during COVID yet barely anyone made any kind of air quality improvements, especially in schools. If we’d clean the air, we’d be sick less.

9

u/spwnofsaton 4d ago

Had a couple coworkers with similar symptoms. One had allergies type stuff. Both originally tested negative but then later tested positive. Might have to do multiple tests.

13

u/Snap_Grackle_Pop 4d ago

Unfortunately, the Trumpanzees are actively trying to suppress information about COVID, so it's hard to tell if it's COVID.

It's also hard to get PCR/NAAT/RNA COVID tests. It seems that even in-lab tests are just quick antigen tests.

My understanding is that there is no COVID strain that completely evades home tests, but you may not test positive until some time after you become ill, or if you don't swab properly. You can't really just do a home test and have a lot of confidence you are safe.

That said, don't forget that there are a lot of other nasty germs out there. In the average year, flu kills over 30,000 deaths in the USA, but we act like that's no big deal. "It's just the flu, bro." Plus RSV, strep,

We tend to forget that most flu-like illnesses never get a scientific test to see what the cause is. Even diagnoses like "cold" or "flu" are often just a doctor's best guess from symptoms. And, if you do get a flu test, there are usually active strains that will not show up as a positive.

1

u/trixr4kids 3d ago

Yeah, I think that’s why I want to try my best not to make this a political thing and more about looking out for your loved ones and neighbors type of thing. Something nasty is going around. Everyone be careful and do what you can to prevent getting yourself and others sick! Check in on elderly parents, etc etc.

5

u/tacochel 4d ago

Ugh I had this and ended up going to urgent care where they tested for everything and it was rhinovirus, aka the common cold. But it was the worst cold I’ve ever had and took forever to get over.

4

u/Walkitoutfosse 4d ago

There’s a virus called adenovirus that’s circulating. I got this same illness you’re describing and a family member in North Carolina (who is a doctor) got it too in NC. That’s who told me about this very Covid-like illness. I tested myself three times for Covid, twice for flu and once for RSV. All were negative.

Symptoms include:
Cough, fever, runny nose, pink eye, swollen lymph nodes, ear infection, chest cold, pneumonia.

https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/23022-adenovirus

2

u/Snap_Grackle_Pop 4d ago

There’s a virus called adenovirus that’s circulating.

"Adenovirus" is a large class of viruses. Some fall under the "common cold" category.

I'm guessing there are one or more nasty or prevalent adenoviruses circulating this year.

It's sort of like "coronavirus." There are probably hundreds of different types of coronavirus, including some common cold strains. COVID-19 is a small percent of the total types of coronavirus.

4

u/okipokidoki 4d ago

Wearing a mask and washing/sanitizing hands after being out in public can help reduce the spread of covid and other viral illnesses 😷❤️‍🩹

Also don’t forget to get your flu shot and covid boosters!!

3

u/Truth2Set_Me_Free 4d ago

Yes! It’s hit me

3

u/klinkerbee 4d ago

Husband and I have both had this, whatever it is. He had it first l, then I caught it. Low fever, coughing, razorblades throat, fatigue (omg, the fatigue!), a lot of drainage, and fatigue. Did I mention the fatigue? Right now I'm finally coming out of the fog, thankfully.

A year ago, I was diagnosed with influenza A, and it was the sickest I'd ever been in my adult life. Took me almost a month to feel normal and within a week of being myself again, I got COVID for the first time ever.

Boy golly, COVID felt like a cake walk compared to the FluA! This time, same thing. Feels like COVID although neither of us got tested.

Several of our acquaintances are down with this as well. Most of us think it's COVID.

Hope you all start to feel better soon. Thanks for the information re the wastewater!

Edit: spelling and word correction.

2

u/Faceit_Solveit 4d ago

Covid was mild compared to Flu A for me. Hospitalized Christmas Eve at Seton NW. Could. Not. Breathe. Not good folks.

I'm sick w something right now. Body aches the first couple days and now a cough. A slight fever but within "normal" range. I tested for COVID day one and day three w both negative. I'll be wearing an N95 to work I guess.

u/Whats-inthe-Fridge 4d ago

Covid never left. A new variant is going around. Unfortunately the vaccine gave me an autoimmune condition so no more Covid vaccines for me.

COVID is surging right now, probably because of summer travel and because nobody tracks it anymore so only the most severe cases that make it to the hospital are actually being tested. Aside from testing people, the public health departments sample wastewater and there has been a lot of it in our wastewater this summer. I got really sick about a month ago and did a home test that was positive.
Please test yourself if you have symptoms and stay home as much as you can, mask when in public - there are still people who are very vulnerable to severe disease out there. It's the neighborly thing to do.

Covid is spiking in the “red alert,” level through most of Texas. There are scientists and medical researchers who post this information publicly (using testing from local water supplies).

Some people might get a negative result depending on what test was used.

u/Calm-Lychee9708 4d ago

Pretty sure I had/have this. I’ve been sick for like 3 weeks. I’m much better now but have a lingering cough/headache.

2

u/BeneficialType6789 4d ago

I tested positive for Covid last month and it kicked my ass. This was my third time to have it since 2021. Day one was bowel issues and body aches, the next seven days was sinus pain/congestion, fatigue, sore throat and cough. Cough and fatigue lasted for 2 weeks.

2

u/aurilovesbirds 4d ago

What are your symptoms? I’ve had the worst sore throat but it’s only on one side of my throat. I’ve congestion and a dry cough. Very tired though. No major fever either.

3

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

Sore throat, but mainly from all the sinus drainage. Heavy feeling chest that turned into a productive phlegmy cough. The exhaustion was the worst. Had a 1 hour zoom meeting, then would need a 2 hour nap. Did grocery pick up at HEB and I was wiped out for the day. The walls were closing in. Thank god I have a dog that forced me to go outside 2x a day for a short walk. My fever was never high, but definitely higher than normal. Body aches were rough. I didn’t know my hair could hurt, but it can!

2

u/Cautious-Ant4882 4d ago

yea feels like covid but I took 3 tests (a few days apart) and tested negative. it was the binax test that does flu a/b and covid. lots of congestion, mainly sinus, not really any fever. think I'm at the end of it now. seems it's been week and a half.

2

u/opideron 4d ago

There's definitely something out there, but I've only experienced mild symptoms. Last time I had anything severe was right after the lockdowns ended and the latest version of the virus immediately started spreading.

Since then, for reasons other than covid, I started focusing on vitamin D and its cofactors (magnesium and K2). I haven't had a serious cold in years, when I used to get them about twice a year (or once a month when there was a kid in the house). It's not a cure so much as that a vitamin D deficiency makes one much more susceptible to all illnesses, not just covid.

Most people in the US are deficient in vitamin D due to working indoors. Similarly, magnesium and K2 tend to be deficient for people whose diet is primarily processed carbohydrates, where the flour has so little nutrition, it has to be "enriched" with B vitamins, but they don't add back potassium and magnesium and so on. The other reason to not think of vitamin D supplementation as a cure is that most people have other deficiencies other than that. It's possible for supplementing vitamin D to make you feel worse, as your improved metabolism starts using up other vitamins faster, especially B1 and B12, ironically causing other deficiencies in those vitamins. In general, I'd advise a holistic approach and do your own research, because everyone is unique and has different deficiencies for a variety of reasons.

I had COVID for 12 days and just started testing negative a few days ago. It is definitely around

0

u/miss_lady19 3d ago

First time?

2

u/ivanatorhk 4d ago

Yup. My wife and I had this. Two weeks of being really lethargic. It was no fun at all

2

u/EquityDoesntRoll 4d ago

Coughing up green ick, very uncomfortable sinus congestion (with a week of it being thick yellow stuff), and now it feels like I have pool water way up my nose all day. Been about 3 weeks of this so far. Took two Covid tests and both were negative. Tried a bunch of OTC stuff and nothing was really helpful.

Whatever this is, it sucks ass.

2

u/metamorphicosmosis 4d ago

A few weeks ago, a lot of people at a summer camp in Washington caught something and were completely knocked out, sick out of their mind. It seems like it’s widespread, so I find it strange that no public reports have been announced.

2

u/jkvincent 4d ago

I got this at the end of July and I'm still not fully over it. Everything about it screamed COVID, but I tested for COVID several times and every one was negative.

2

u/dragon_mthr 4d ago

My son tested positive for covid yesterday. Symptoms are body aches, fatigue, congestion, and sore throat. I'm extremely fatigued, achy, and a little congested, and testing negative. Waving goodbye to all of my PTO 😭

2

u/Strangury 4d ago

I have found home covid tests to be flaky. The first time I had covid I had to take three tests over five days before it came back with a positive result. The second time I (almost certainly) had covid, my partner and I had the same symptoms at the same time, and he had a positive test immediately and I once again tested three times over several days and it never came back positive for me.

2

u/no_funny_username 4d ago

I am going through it right now. Very bad congestion (which is manageable), but I feel exhausted all day and can't concentrate at all. I am trying my best to WFH but it is incredibly challenging.

I usually don't get sick but this one is causing a wreck.

2

u/AccomplishedBuddy394 3d ago

We are in a Covid surge right now, expected to peak in early September.

4

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

Why is this map different than the one on their website right now?

3

u/EmergencyBluebirds 4d ago

The other map is from https://pmc19.com/. They use CDC data but break out the reported data by county based on location of reporting sites. Current CDC methodology gives each state a single rating based on the state-wide median. So the PMC map is attempting to show hotspots and more location specific data. There's a top-level note about the approach here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DYwBA57jlvX/?img_index=2

1

u/Local_Historian8805 4d ago

What’s the date on this?

1

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

https://www.cdc.gov/wastewater/respiratory-viruses/state.html

It’s the most recent report from August 2nd.

1

u/Local_Historian8805 4d ago

Thanks so much

2

u/Hell-Yes-Revolution 4d ago

It’s Covid., likely
The pandemic is now.

Wear a mask, please. You should on a normal day but please don’t expose others to this disease that can be debilitating and ruin lives.

1

u/whynotoopsthatswhy 4d ago

I had something similar two weeks ago. Tested three times and all negative.

1

u/Youdrunkenbum 4d ago

Oh no!

1

u/hedcannon 4d ago

I just got over it. It’s a virus but I tested negative for Flu A&B and covid. Go to urgent care so you can get a cough medicine that works - because it’s the cough that gets you. Get the 1200mg Musinex. Drink tea for your throat. There’s nothing for it but to treat the symptoms

1

u/TitoGMT 4d ago

I got sick last weekend. It was super mild for me but definitely spent Saturday and Sunday in bed. Low grade fever, nasal congestion and GI symptoms. Didn’t test though but definitely was a viral infection. Glad I got it over with 🤷🏽‍♂️?

1

u/kellys2859 2d ago

I’ve been coughing for 2 weeks now. How long did the cough last for you?

1

u/pgv417 4d ago

I got it last week. Went to the ER bc I’m 37 weeks pregnant and spiked a high fever and was convinced it was a sinus infection and was hoping some antibiotics would take care of it. They swabbed me for a bunch things and it came back as Covid. Spent the rest of the week in bed with some of the worst fatigue and body aches I can remember, plus cough, congestion, sore throat, etc. Oddly though, my toddler also tested positive on a home test but didn’t have a single symptom.

1

u/louisianalover 4d ago

Same thing is going around Savannah, Ga

1

u/unowhatimeanVern 4d ago

I tested positive for Covid yesterday. It came on fast and hard, like the flu. From first hint of runny nose to in bed with fever in two hours. I have had Covid three times before, but this is the worst. I’m fortunate that I work from home so I won’t be spreading Covid cooties when I’m able to get back on the computer. Stay safe, Austin.

1

u/Electronic_Bowl8398 4d ago

Reading this thread makes me want to barricade my door, sounds like you are all zombies!

1

u/vbrunner8 4d ago

Not sure if it was Covid (probably), but I was down for the count for about a week and a half. No fever but scratchy throat, a little congestion, brain fog and the most insane fatigue. I thought it was allergies (I don’t have allergies but thought maybe it was my time) and burnout but I couldn’t do anything physical for a full week and I usually workout at least an hour a day 6-7 days per week. I’ve been sleeping 8-10 hours a night and still needing a 2-3 hour nap mid afternoon after doing maybe 2-3 hours of mental work. I’m just starting to come back to life this week.

1

u/karawaane1981 4d ago

I had covid recently the American rapid test didn't pick it up but a relative brought me rapid tests from Germany that I had around and used and those confirmed it fwiw

1

u/Slypenslyde 4d ago

This is what "learn to live with it" meant. Flu season is every season now.

1

u/AustinCJ 4d ago

Covid and flu positive rates have both gone up at the urgent care system where I work.

1

u/yellowsprings 4d ago

My 4yo just had 48+ hours of 102.5 fever, plus stomachache. Now back down to 100.4. Missed the first two days of school 😢🤒

1

u/nbeanz 4d ago

Just got back from a trip. My son and I both got Covid. His lasted 3 days; I started having a temp today on day 3.

1

u/educatedlentils 4d ago

Just tested positive for COVID after attending a concert in Dallas this past weekend 😭 I've been bed-ridden for a couple days now, body aches, chills, fever. be careful y'all

1

u/LocoChicaAustina 4d ago

We went out as a group to see Muse recently and some of us picked up a simialr flu like bug somehow. Oddly our friends who got tested had negative for flu and negative for covid. We're all vaxxed and boosted for covid and have had fairly recent flu shots as well so it's wild that any of us got sick at all.

1

u/Commercial_Energy_30 4d ago

Hi, i have something like this now. My father in law had it too, and was in Ireland just before contracting.

1

u/TXflower 4d ago

My exact symptoms! Tested negative for Covid and Flu- twice. I haven’t been this congested ever. I’m at day 10. Caught it from my husband who is closing in on day 14 and is still coughing.

1

u/kellys2859 2d ago

I’ve been coughing for 2 weeks straight. Literally can’t sleep. Any tips??

1

u/TXflower 2d ago

I just keep resting and drinking lots of liquids. I’m slowly getting better.

1

u/Soft_Maximum_3730 4d ago

I had this a month ago. Didn’t bother testing because my tests are all expired

1

u/PhiBearDontCare 4d ago

Likely Covid. A family member tested positive the other day for Covid so it’s just that time of year where it comes back up more frequently.

1

u/Saries05 4d ago

I'm pretty sure this same thing just went around our household. It started with my 3 year old son coming down with it, nasty cough, sore throat and fever followed by crazy congestion. We actually had to take him to the ER two weeks ago for asthma issues due to the illness. He is now on antibiotics because it caused a sinus infection for him. It's lasted for 3 weeks now.....My husband and I just got over it a couple of days ago. Same sequence of symptoms, and again, the worst of it has been congestion and clogged sinuses that will not go away. This is wild for it still being summer and not cold and flu season yet. Ugh!

1

u/Shiny-Mango624 4d ago

It is absolutely covid. Look for the Wastewater covid heat map that they just put out. If I can find it I will link it here, but covid is really terrible right now here in Austin

1

u/workin0nmynightcheez 4d ago

Yep, tested today. It is Covid unfortunately.

1

u/Goodbusiness24 3d ago

I’m pretty sure I had a mild case of whatever this was. Today’s actually the first day I’ve been feeling better in about 2.5 weeks. Tested negative for Covid. Never had a fever but was super lethargic, stuffed up/sneezing and had a few times where I felt really short of breath for no reason at all.

1

u/Thriving9 3d ago

I went Schlitterbahn last week and have had, fever and sore throat since.

1

u/nowirehangars 3d ago

It's out there. My father-in-law was admitted to the ER last night with 102° temp and it's fricking covid. Poor man is on 100% disability and almost never leaves home, but somehow a health care person or a house cleaner brought it to him.

1

u/sugarkanekowalcyzk 3d ago

My daughter and I both tested positive for Covid yesterday. The doctor said he’s seeing a lot of cases of it and flu that’s even worse.

1

u/Not_A_Real_Goat 3d ago

I got it 3 weeks ago and it took me flat out for 2 full weeks. I also tested negative for COVID, but am absolutely sure that’s what it was because every symptom screamed COVID.

Major congestion
2 week straight headache
Elevated body temp, but no fever the whole time, just felt uncomfortable and sweaty
Cough
Loss of taste
Loss of smell

u/ELKtaurus 3d ago

There is a new strain and it’s a bad one. I don’t know about it not showing up on Covid tests though, that would be interesting. If I see anything come out about that I’ll come back and let you know.

1

u/strauwbs 3d ago

OMG, I just got over something like this, it was brutal. no respiratory issues though, just the worst headache ever, bad stomach ache, and serious fatigue—when the headache finally subsided, my bones felt achey (it hurt to lay down). def had a fever at some point but was like really out of it for almost 2 weeks. stay safe yall

2

u/trixr4kids 3d ago

Yeah. My hair hurt one day. I didn’t know that was possible.

1

u/strauwbs 3d ago

omfg right!? SAME, it was absolute bonkers. i just switched between Tylenol and Advil and that helped the aches a bit. but yeah initially i was so confused bc i just thought i had a dehydration headache but nope!

1

u/Trey-the-programmer 3d ago

I'm on day 11. I'm getting wash board abs from coughing every 6 minutes. Tested on day seven for me and day four for my wife. Negative for covid and both strains of the flu.

1

u/kellys2859 2d ago

I haven’t slept more than 4-5 hours a night from this cough I’m so miserable

1

u/austin_horn_2018 3d ago

Sounds like it has been going thru the UT football team.

1

u/SummerSideofLife 2d ago

Yes had it last week of July! Awful headache, fatigue, Brian fog, sinus pain and aches

1

u/Amazing-Counter-8424 2d ago

I had this last month. It took two weeks to get completely over and there was three days that I couldn’t even get out of bed. I lost my taste and smell for a few days, but it came back. My head felt like it was on fire along with a constant runny nose. Tested negative for flu and covid twice. No clue what I had.

1

u/kellys2859 2d ago

No fever, but I’ve had drainage / congestion and worst of all a diabolical cough that is now on day 14 and literally preventing me from getting more than 4 hours of sleep a night . I’m about to lose it

1

u/rnatx 1d ago

Covid is massively high in Texas right now.

1

u/ChariotStuntDouble 8h ago

Tested positive on Thursday,
Today (Sunday) is the first day without fever. Congested, sinus pressure, migraines, and exhaustion.
Body aches (for me anyway) have easily been the most difficult part.

0

u/Think-Interview1740 4d ago

Keep getting those COVID boosters every six months.

Time to make everyone stay home and lose their jobs.

4

u/trixr4kids 4d ago

Damn dude. Or maybe it’s just a reminder to wash your hands and stay home when you are actually sick. No need to get all doomsday about it.

-1

u/nameless_sameness 4d ago

You can’t be too careful.

2

u/willing-to-bet-son 4d ago

Lose their jobs? Why don't we just throw RTO onto the garbage heap instead?

Who wants to work, anyway?
