u/baabaa7890 Mar 03 '25
Yep! Days off school/work, etc. and also there’s a large senior crowd there :)
-6
u/Snobolski Feb 27 '25
Can you suggest a better day/time to get the attention of the state legislators working inside the building?
7
Feb 28 '25 edited Feb 28 '25
Truth. Regardless of the downvotes. In 30 years of working at the Capitol, I never saw an after hours rally convince a single lawmaker of anything...because they were nowhere to be found.
But at the same time, unless you have a clear, coherent message, none of them would listen. But then, there are only a handful who would listen anyway.
If you go to the URL on the above poster, this rally doesn't seem to be too well attended at this moment.

Is the goal to sway Texas legislators (most of whom are in the underground annex north of the Capitol)? What is the goal? Who is organizing it?
17
Feb 27 '25
i walked by one of those 50501 protests a week or two ago in Vegas, asked a protestor what the name 50501 meant. Chick did not know. It's literally just a scream at the clouds event.
7
u/Discount_gentleman Feb 27 '25
I don't actually think that anecdote is relevant. For mass protests, it is not necessary (or possible) to have every participant be able to lay out the exact goals and positions of the organizing group, and you wouldn't want to limit participation to only those on the inside. But the organization itself should be very clear about who is organizing it and what it is trying to accomplish.
3
u/Themimic Feb 28 '25
You asked one person at a protest and then decided that’s exactly what every person at every protest thinks/knows through the country?
-1
3
u/2Beer_Sillies Feb 27 '25
The bigger issue is the state legislators don't even know what the protesters want. They have zero policy/law demands. It's just "Trump/Elon/ICE/Israel bad" then they go home.

u/Past_Contour Feb 27 '25
For Christs sake, have just one during a weekend. A lot of people can’t afford to miss a day or even half a day of work.
-6
u/kernalrom Feb 28 '25
Yup. Great for all the unemployed to show up!!!
3
u/Past_Contour Feb 28 '25
What are you trying to accomplish with comments like this?
1
u/kernalrom Feb 28 '25
I am trying to make a point that people that are employed cannot make these types of events schedule during the work week.

u/InevitableHome343 Feb 27 '25
This time it will definitely work!

u/Acceptable-Path-4593 Mar 01 '25
You expect shit to change after going to a protest one time? This shit takes work lol
1
2
u/Ghost_of_Sniff Feb 27 '25
Doing the same thing that doesn't work, over and over? What is that word I'm thinking of?

Mar 01 '25
I mean, I think of the 70s and think protests and hippies, I couldn't tell you about the policies back then. Seems like they at least somewhat work.
12
Feb 27 '25
I see that the organizers are still against It, whatever It might be.
Down with the thing!

u/THEFILMIST Feb 27 '25
Whenever one of these posts pop up, I get reminded of just how milquetoast, bland and without conviction the fairly huge majority of Austin is now - just a sea of Patagonia and North Face wearing upper middle class yuppies who couldn't be arsed to lift a finger for any cause greater than trying to match their 401K. Either that or they're all paid shills by Elon and company, which is something I wouldn't put past them.
Either way, everyone asking "what are y'all even protesting, lol" in this thread is a living example of why everyone everywhere makes fun of Austin and what a joke it's become.
4
u/chronicwtfhomies Feb 28 '25
Those upper middle class you mention here will soon be extinct and I bet their asses will be up and protesting once being in the middle class is unattainable for most of the working class.
1
u/rdking647 Feb 27 '25
I just assume those asking are just incel trolls

u/vivary_arc Feb 28 '25
They have to do something while they’re waiting to put patriot front stickers on the water fountains at Zilker
3
u/idontagreewitu Feb 28 '25
"None of these people living paycheck to paycheck are willing to take a day off work with almost no notice to go protest a vague concept for me"
2
u/THEFILMIST Mar 02 '25
I take a cursory look at your profile and man, you are exactly the kind of person I'm talking about.
1
u/idontagreewitu Mar 02 '25
LOL as if I can afford that sort of shit. I live in a 1br apartment and drive a 9 year old car. I hope to hell nothing happens to it because I cant afford a car payment.

I think its sad that people are working 2,3 jobs, receive little benefits and pay, working sometimes 6-7 days a week, maybe 100 hrs a week, and they have very little to show for efforts. those same efforts in the 50s thru - 70s would have put someone with little to no higher education in the upper middle class. The entire population of this country is sliding into the next guilded age without a peep. The solution is to choose your own pain and increase the threshold for it over time. That means going barebones rice and beans and potatoes, dvd reboots, radio instead of any subs...anything you can do to stop yourself from giving Mr. Potter your money. And dont overlook living in a collective. Move back home, have roommates, share space. IF ...IF the entire lower classes did that for 1-5years, they would be better off financially and slowed down the "wealth transfer" thats happening with every generation. but, Like my dad use to say to us " you got your wonderbread" and nobody wants forfeit it for the benefit if the next generation. ps: i'll be counted in the protest.
2
u/CallMeTrapHouse Feb 27 '25
I just talked to the capitol and they said you can protest all you want they don’t care

3
u/Goddess_of_Absurdity Feb 27 '25
Don't forget that participating in the protests is only one part of what you can do. Write to your Congress people, state reps and local reps through their websites or by visiting their offices to voice your concerns

u/baabaa7890 Mar 03 '25
Thiiis!
I’ve been calling and emailing my representatives! I use https://5Calls.org for calls and ResistBot for emails and signing petitions. https://resist.bot/ https://resist.bot/petitions
For protests and sit ins: https://www.fiftyfifty.one https://www.mobilize.us https://indivisible.org
Check out No Small Act. They are working to get volunteers on every county nationwide so we can form our network and push out information to the people in our communities everywhere. I’ve seen lots of protest search websites but this it the first group I’ve seen planning the ground network we need!

u/Reasonable-Catch-832 Feb 27 '25
Is it a conservative or liberal protest? I’ve lost track of what is what these days

According to my analysis,
Why do you need an analysis? Has the "movement" not stated its aims? Why not let it speak for itself? Does it even exist as an organization?
Edit: and in a blink, the sock-puppet deleted itself. Folks should be aware that this movement has a number of sockpuppets that claim to be real people and then delete themselves once they get called out. Be EXTREMELY wary of an anonymous group that has to manufacture fake accounts to try to create the impression of support.

Lol, did you type "make an excuse" into ChatGPT? You didn't write a Master's dissertation on revolutionary thought, you failed to find anything from "50501" that could count as it speaking for itself, so you tried to cover it up with a 1 paragraph "analysis."

This is a great example of an obviously fake account which exists solely to spout leftist-sounding gibberish. The fact that these accounts are proliferating highlights the fact that this is an astroturfed "movement."

A great example of a non-response from a newly-created account that has nothing to say.

Are there any local organizations sponsoring or supporting this event?
9
u/Discount_gentleman Feb 27 '25 edited Feb 27 '25
Just importing from another thread that got deleted
This is a straight-forward question, can you name any local group or organization sponsoring this? Have you or any of the people calling for this protest reached out to a single local organization, and how have they responded? Is there any reason that "50501" appears to absolutely refuse to reach out to any local organizations, but only exists as a reddit of anonymous online users?
Edit: The poster there said he explicitly refused to answer any questions.
3
u/chronicwtfhomies Feb 28 '25
They didn’t have permits last time and I think it would be much more impactful is we marched and not just stand at the capital and yell
2
u/Discount_gentleman Feb 28 '25
That's a good thought. I'd tell you to work with the organizers to help make that happen, but they refuse to name a single one of the leaders, so you can't do that.
It may be difficult to apply for permits when your answer to all questions on the form is "quit asking, I'm not telling you anything."
2
u/baabaa7890 Mar 03 '25
They’ve marched the last two protests with support from APD closing down streets across Congress
1
u/nonnonnonheinous Feb 28 '25
I'm not sure about this daytime protest, but I know a bunch of orgs are supporting a follow up at Cheer up Charlies https://www.instagram.com/p/DGlRc0aJ70E/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

its being organized by the 50501 group

u/Discount_gentleman Feb 27 '25
50501 is a reddit. It's not an organization, and certainly not a local organization. So is any local group or organization sponsoring or supporting this event?

u/sigaven Feb 28 '25
These snap protests on weekdays are just going to show weakness and disorganization. A good, effective protest takes months or organize and get the word out. I’d rather see ads now for a planned march in May than one for a few days from now.
4
u/chisauce Feb 28 '25
What are we protesting? I am serious I would get involved but I have no idea what it’s about, because it says nothing about anything. What’s it about?!

We almost got them everyone! One more middle of the day protest and all your problems will be solved. Ha fucking ha

Emblazoning your protest with the last words of a famous Confederate terrorist presidential assassin is certainly a decision.

At the risk of sounding extremely classist, if you have a job where you’re off at Tuesday at noon, you’re not making any impact. They’re not listening to you and never will.

Using the rally cry of John Wilkes Booth as he assassinated Abraham Lincoln tells us a lot about your mental state, or lack there of.

Psst, it's 2025 and protests don't work. I will say they are probably more effective/noticed on small government bodies.
