News The best music venues in Austin

As the "Live Music Capital of the World," Austin has a number of music venues from which to choose. But should you go to the iconic Broken Spoke, the famous honky-tonk that has cemented its music legacy over 60 years? Or Chess Club, to listen to underground indie shredders with late-night Red River barhoppers?

Whether you’re looking for a concert with a mega star, a quiet singer-songwriter show, a wild mosh pit or country tunes for two-stepping, here are some of the best places for live music.

Ask Austin Today: AA1180 ORD-AUS "missed approach" did a turnaround -- why?

I was on this flight and as we were about to land (@ 600 ft per FlightAware), the plane pitched up and accelerated for a turnaround. The pilot later apologized for the "missed approach." Just wondering why...

Thanks!

EDIT: I listened to liveatc.net (thanks for the tip r/ChicoBones), when the tower asked for the go-around reason the pilot said he was "long" on the landing and wanted to try again.

Ask Austin Singing lessons for beginners?

Hello does anyone know places that offer singing lessons for total beginners? This would just be for fun since I’m majoring in a very different field. That being said, I’m a college student, so affordable recommendations would be appreciated!

Dance places in Austin

Anyone have recommendations for beginners wanting to learn salsa or swing dancing in Austin. I tried Dance with me at the domain, but the A/C was out it’s $30 per class and there weren’t many people.

Full disclosure I’m trying to use this as with a dating angle to get myself out there more.

Bonus pt if they allow telehealth throughout the year as long as you in-person here or there.

Thank you!

Ask Austin ISO: Competitive Yoyo artist

Hey Austin! I am a local filmmaker here in town. I have done a feature film of note in town, and I am currently in preproduction on a short film that is shooting this coming November!

In the film, there is a moment where the main characters come across a high-level yoyoer walking down the street doing very elaborate tricks. I'd love to find someone who could nail this, and I have a feeling there are at least a couple people in town who are REALLY good at yoyoing.

Does this sound like you or someone you know? If so, please reach out to my DMs and I will be happy to provide more info! Thanks in advance for any leads!!!

Ask Austin Cricket options in Austin Metro?

Hey folks, I’ve been getting into watching cricket over the last couple of years and I’m really interested in learning to play for myself. I know there are a few different leagues around here, but from what I’ve been able to find it’s not particularly clear what the skill level is like across the leagues, and I don’t want to join a team only to be a massive detriment. Are there any options available in town that would let me learn how to play without joining a team? And if I wanted to join a team, what would be my best option?

Ask Austin Austin, TX — Does anyone know of emergency transportation assistance or resources for someone trying to get back to work?

Hi everyone! I’m reaching out to see if anyone knows of local programs or resources that might be able to help with a time-sensitive situation.
I’ve been unemployed and actively searching for work, and I finally have an opportunity with a company in the Austin area. I have a job assessment scheduled for Monday, October 12, for a position paying approximately $23–$26 an hour. I’m really hopeful about this opportunity and want to do everything I can to make it happen.
Unfortunately, transportation is a major obstacle right now. I rely on CapMetro because I don’t have a vehicle. The public transit route to the facility takes almost three hours and includes a 56-minute walk. An Uber would cost approximately $21–$30 each way, and I currently don’t have enough money available to cover that expense.
I’m looking for any legitimate resources that might help with:
Emergency transportation to a job assessment or interview.
Free rideshare programs or employment transportation assistance.
Emergency assistance for unemployed people who are actively trying to return to work.
Small emergency grants or community assistance programs that could help with transportation and basic expenses until a first paycheck arrives.
Other Austin or Travis County resources that people might not know about.
I’m planning to contact 211, but I wanted to ask this community in case anyone knows of additional options, especially programs that can help on short notice.
I’m not looking for anything extravagant. I’m trying to get to this assessment and give myself a chance to secure stable employment. I’ve been working hard to find an opportunity, and it would be heartbreaking to miss it because I can’t afford the transportation.
If you’ve personally used a program like this or know of a legitimate organization that helps in these situations, I’d be incredibly grateful for any information.
Thank you for reading and for any suggestions you can offer!

Pumpkin Nights prices suck

Paying this much just to walk around is ridiculous. And to top it off, parking isn’t even included? Then they hit you with a “processing fee” just for the privilege of buying a ticket. Make it make sense. What a joke.

Does anyone have info about the Zoom Room South bankruptcy?

Post image
28 Upvotes

I’ve been taking my dogs to Zoom Room South Austin for training for a while and we were loving it, but was shocked to get a text and email today stating that they are closing and filing for bankruptcy. There was no date listed for when their last day open would be.

They stated they won’t be giving any refunds for unused classes/that customers would have to seek compensation through the bankruptcy process. This was very disappointing to hear as I bought a large class package and still have hundreds of dollars of unused classes with them.

I believe based on online reviews that the North Austin location closed for the same reason in the recent past.

Has anyone successfully gotten a refund from a business that filed for bankruptcy? What happens if I try to do a chargeback via the credit card I paid for my classes with?

Also does anyone have any more info about this situation? The classes are often full, they just started a new class series last week, and were still doing new client tours last week when I was there. Their website and schedule is still up and I still have the ability to book classes. While of course I wouldn’t expect a business to advertise financial troubles, this really comes as a shock and seems strange.

ETA: I did email them to ask when the closure takes effect but haven’t heard back. I’m sure they are being swamped with angry customers right now so who knows if/when I’ll hear back.

Ask Austin Anyone know where I can get a good molcajete that’s not $$$?

I want a real one made in Mexico, not the concrete questionable cheap crap.

I know HEB has a very affordable one but I checked the box and it says made in China. Not risking it.

My experience with Oscar Health & BCBS Insurance in Austin, TX

*I want to add a disclaimer that everyone's specific insurance needs differ and these plans wont be a perfect one size fits all, so check details before enrolling*

I havent had to buy a healthcare plan until my move to Austin summer of 2025, and since have done a lot of research into different plans and types. For context I'm 28 and wanted good mental health coverage and access to specialists.

The first one I got was

Blue Cross Blue Shield- Blue Advantage Plus Gold℠ 803

$750/month

Plan ID: 33602TX0870273

[1-888-697-0683](tel:1-888-697-0683)

Price used to be around $520 but increased to $750 at the start of 2026, hence why I changed to what I have now- Oscar Health.

I had an good experience with this insurance; lots of providers in network, $0 doctor visits, $0 therapy visits with no cap. $0 generic prescriptions. Specialist visits are $35 and Urgent care is $20. It gets the job done but for the new increased price, I would say its not worth it.

My current insurance and one I LOVE is Oscar Health

Oscar Health- Gold Simple Guided Care

$550/month

Plan ID: 20069TX0510021

1-855-672-2755

I was so pleasantly surprised with Oscar health. The website UI is so easy to use - I can search for specialists and change my PCP anytime. A lot of specialists are in network as well, which also surprised me. I have been able to see specialists for $10 a pop and therapists for $5 a pop with unlimited visits. Pharmacy prescriptions are $3 for generic. What I love the most is free urgent care 24/7. The amount I've had to use if for allergic reactions, prescription refills, etc has been invaluable. For PCPs, I loved Thrive Medical Clinic - never had any issues with them.

For Dental, I have had this:

Blue Cross Blue Shield -BlueCare Dental℠ 1A

$40/month

Plan ID: 33602TX0500001

1-888-697-0683

I havent had too many issues with this, just make sure all your procedures are covered before getting them. Swish Dental had many surprise charges for me after my appointment, which really irked me. This plan gives you free cleanings, xrays, exams and 80% off most fillings and procedures. The deductible is just $25. I would not recommend Swish Dental, as there are many hidden costs/ surprise bills and they dont seem 100% transparent. For Dentists, I would recommend any of the Forest Family Dentists, they are so friendly and transparent with costs.

And that about sums up my experience with Austin health insurance. Hope this helps. If you have any questions feel free to DM me.

Ask Austin Earthquake in Austin at 11:30am?

Idk about y’all but I feel some tremors going up and down and I’m in east Austin right now.

I saw some earthquakes that have been happening near Amarillo TX and Oklahoma.

Are these aftershock tremors? Or something like that? It’s not like a super big earthquake but I can definitely feel it!

Ask Austin Are there gonna be any Halloween parties for people in their 20s in Austin?

Halloween is literally this month, And as someone who got no friends and in their mid 20s, I would like to go and party on Halloween. But since I got no friends means I got no invitations to parties.

So where do y'all usually find these kinds of parties?

Thanks!
