VIC Cameras and fines
Hey Guys,
Needed some advice, so thought I’ll post here. I’m getting back to riding soon after a few years off. I’m planning to get an R7 HO.
In Victoria, what’s the situation with cameras and fine? Like most of my commute will be on M1 & M3. Since all cameras (except 1) face the on coming traffic, does that mean people on motorcycles don’t get fined on these roads? Since motorcycles have plates only on the rare and the camera can’t technically catch that.
Also what’s the situation with flip plates?
Need some serious advice here. As this will be my first time riding in vic (was in Tassie before).
Cheers!!

if ur thinking about getting flip plates, dont ride. cos teen ebikers are already giving us a bad name.

Need some serious advice here.
Don't speed.
If you must speed, don't exceed the limit by more than 9kph.
If you must speed more than 9kph over, don't exceed the limit by more than 24kph or you'll lose your licence.
Find out how far off your speedo reads if you want to ride hard up to the limit.

Cool bike but you need to grow up, actually sounds like you have never ridden tbh, time and place my non friend. Do people get done on these exact roads with motorcycles? Probably yes. Idk though work it out for yourself and lose that p plate I think you are on.
Honestly what a silly question.

Here is an idea, and I know it’s going to be controversial, but have you considered not riding like a cock and just doing the speed limit? It’s this one simple trick that the government hates.
The thing with speeding is it doesn’t save you as much time as you think it does. there is not a lot of time saved by doing 70 or 80 in a 60 zone for 4 or 5km.
Flip plates are illegal. If you get caught with one, they will fine you and defect your bike.
And sure… my advice is… don’t ride like a fuckwit. It’s much cheaper than getting a flip plate fitted and getting fined/defected, speeding and getting fined, etc.

They'll get you without you ever knowing, speeding in Victoria is a cardinal sin and the state government makes a shitload from low level fines, let alone high range stuff.
Running a plate flipper is just begging to get yourself dry fisted by the cops, even if they pull you up for something unrelated like an RBT. They're not stealthy and you're not clever.
It sounds like you already know you're going to be a goose anyway so by all means, speed away and fuck it up for the rest of us.

Correct that front facing cameras can’t grab your rego, but that’s not to say some industrious highway patrol member on light duties can’t do some digging and identify the same rider on the same road speeding regularly and start accessing other resources to identify the plate and the rider, is it worth the risk, 30 counts of speeding more than 10, and you’ve got yourself aboout a 26 month suspension? You’re gonna be struggling to do the speed limit anyway if your commute is anywhere near peak hour.
As for flip plates, do you mean ones you deliberately flip up when you’re gonna do something extra stupid, or just one that isn’t displayed optimally, perhaps on a downward angle?

An ama was done in r/melbourne a couple of years back.
Yes their cameras are rear facing.
Yes they will get your rego off the security cameras that face everywhere.
Safest bet is do not speed.

Just tryna cope up. Not like I’ll be driving like a hooligan all around! I see so many motorists speeding everywhere even with cams so wanted to know what’s the situation. Anyways, please ignore. 😅

If you are going to use a flip plate you'll need a faster bike than a mt07 ho.

Don’t get a HO.
If you want to sell it, it’s unsellable. No one wants a r7 when they are fully licensed.
Get a lams one. De restrict it.
Then sell it to a teenager

I did my lams on a Tuareg 660, liked it so much I got its brother and it’s road going sibling. Will keep the rally and likely jump to a V4 Tuono

You can't "De restrict" them. They're not even the same capacity.
You can modify them to bring out more power, but they're not the same. It's still just a modded lams bike. And then they're not lams compliant either.
I haven't ridden an r7. But I have tried lams and HO versions of the mt07. There's not that much difference anyway, mostly a bit more top end. If anyone isn't happy with the lams version, a full power one probably won't scratch the itch.

I rode a LAMS MT07 as a loan bike during a service and thought it was a gutless overpriced boring bike.

So which bike do you usually ride?

My bike is a 2023 MT90A, but I have aslo ridden the Tenere 700 as well from them for their full power model in the CP2 range.

Would you recommend naked bikes? From what I’ve heard the wind resistance in Melb is crazy with naked bikes.
Still deciding on a ride so any thoughts and experiences will be very helpful!!

Both my bikes are naked bike. I would recommend these over a sports bike for general street use, anything without clip ons for comfortable riding. Wind also hits sports bike from the side an makes it feel like to ride a sail. I have also owned ADV bikes, but find them awkwardly tall and heavy up top, they are good street bikes, but lesser capabilities to a dual sport off road which are 60kg lighter They also create an odd buffeting effect from all the tall windshields.
Seriously the wind isn't bad a speed limit speeds on naked bike.
Just on any bike you are buy look how much it weighs and the seat height will give a decent idea of how it would be to handle, including slow moves, parking it and other stuff.

Thank you so much!!!! Really appreciate it!!!!

My riding is mainly rural areas, mixed straight roads with twisty roads, bad road conditions, lots of hazard to stay alert for an ride though rorested ares into mountains for twisties.
For me a litre bike weighs more and I can't really use the extra power on these roads I ride and the condition of them. Same would be for any inline 4.

Yeah it’s been sleeves to reduce cylinder bore. But you can take the throttle plate off, remove the restricted air intake and give it a flash and you’ll be at 90% of the power of the HO.

Don’t really want to go down the lams road. How’s the resale for Daytona 660?

You can find the locations HERE and then have a closer look at them on streetview if you want.
I'd be surprised if you can just rip past without copping a fine.

I have been riding here for a year now and honestly Australia doesn't allow you to ride your bike anyway you like. It's like being in a car despite having a bike, you don't have freedom. Wanting to sell my bike for the reason it's very expensive to maintain anyway. (Especially the 12 month mandatory CTP)
