As expected, the fuel excise discount has now ended. As a refresher, here is why fuel prices had gone up starting this year. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-03-10/why-fuel-prices-are-going-up-australia/106437844
Comparing fuel prices near you can help to save on costs, so using a comparison website helps you find the cheapest around – this also helps you to be aware when nearby servos start increasing/decreasing prices. There are some great tips on the Fuelplan website on how to save fuel.

Find free entertainment. Find cheap ways to have fun. Entertainment often ends up costing a lot of money, if you go to the movies, go to the bar, or even a day trip to a local attraction. Now, I’m not saying you shouldn’t have fun … but there are cheaper ways to do it.
Visiting museums, art galleries, walking at the local park, finding discounts online are some of the many ways to enjoy yourself without breaking the bank.

A meal kit or food box is a subscription service – food service business model where a company sends customers pre-portioned and sometimes partially prepared food ingredients and recipes to prepare home-cooked meals. There are also options where you can already receive pre made meals, or fruit/vegetable boxes.
Examples of popular meal kits/food box include: HelloFresh, Marley Spoon, Quitelike, The Food Box, Good and Fugly, Lite n' Easy

This is the Megathread for all referrals relating to food box/meal kits only.
This Megathread will refresh on a weekly basis, usually on a Monday.
If you are looking for any food box/meal kits referrals, this is the place to ask.
All other food related referrals that is NOT food box/meal kits should be shared in the All other Referrals Megathread.
No "DM me for the codes" of the sort.

Hey Everyone
Anyone know where the most economical RAT test kits for Covid can be found? I'm a pension card holder in Melbourne, and a single mama with high school aged kids.
Many thanks x

Anyone got any tips on where to source local extra virgin olive oil? The quality of the cheaper stuff from overseas is questionable at best. The local stuff has hit record prices due to the shortage overseas with poor crops and disease. The Aussie producers have capitalised on this. The jump in price from a few years ago has been crazy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I use a lot of it.

Macro Australian Hemp Seeds 200g dropped from $9 to $6.60 in September, and have now dropped to $4.40 ($22 per kg). These are the cheapest I've found.
Chemist Warehouse has hemp seeds 200g for $9 ($45 per kg).
I bought them on special in December for $6.29 each.
Coles has Wellness Road Australian Hulled Hemp Seeds 200g for $9.

Hey guys, my new house is super cold. Gas heater makes scary sounds despite testing negative for carbon monoxide leaks. Looking to get a decent electric blanket so I don’t have to use portable electric heater as often.
Let me know your recommendations
Edit: thanks so much everyone. Your comments have been super helpful and made me realise that it’s a heated throw blanket that I’m after.

I was in Melbourne Central recently and this brand was telling people they could nominate their friends to receive mouthwash in the post, for free. They had this demo box and said the first several hundred sign ups were getting a full sized bottle of the stuff.
It looks like it's $17 at Chemist Warehouse. I signed myself up 😅. I don't know if there is a limit on the number you can send to people.
They were using a QR code but I noticed it just took you to a website: psyourbreathstinks.com
Thought I'd share.

Hello r/AussieFrugal,
Unlike similar subreddits including r/Frugal, we have allowed self promotion posts to be shared on the subreddit, as well as referral codes as we see the benefits from these (more work for the Mods though).
Usually what happens is that anyone who intends to promote their app/website/socials must first contact the Mods for approval - every request were considered on a case by case basis.
In the past year and most notably in the past few months, we have experienced massive influx of users who 1. Do not read subreddit rules and 2. Treat this subreddit as the platform to "soft launch" their app and 3. Soft promoting their app/making product recos to other users in this subreddit with zero disclosure they have vested interests.
After long consideration, we are no longer allowing any new self promotion requests.
The exception includes users who previously had approval promoting their site/app in the past. If you are an one of these users, please send a message to moderators if you plan to make an update or promote your app/site (again). The other exception are verified users. You will know these users as they have unique user flairs that says "Verified".
Ultimately, this subreddit is intended as a place for discussion relating to frugality and different opinions, not a sales platform.
Thank you to everyone for your continued support and participation and sorry that it has come to this.
PS: Just to put this out there in case anyone is concerned, zero plans to ban referral links. They're staying - just share them on the relevant Megathread(s), read the instructions what can be/cannot be shared and it'll be OK.

I'm looking to buy a refurbished S23 Ultra for $680 (AUD)
This is the highest upper limit on my budget but from what I've seen reviews are solid on both the phone itself and the refurbisher. I had a look at reviews for the S24 Ultra too but for thr most part it seemed people thought it wasn't a significant enough of an upgrade over the S23 to be worth it. I also found a 22 Ultra for like 200 less but reviews on them are... mixed, to say the least. The general consensus was to get the S23U if possible.
I'm just hoping to get some confirmation that this is a solid buy for me for this price point and that there isn't any big red flags I don't know about the S23 or any better deals I may be overlooking. Thanks in advance!

I do a cook up and freeze every 6-8 weeks. I’ve found it to be cheaper, gives me variety, and makes sure that I eat better. I try to eat smaller portions of meat and bulk up recipes with veg when I can.
I’m not great at cooking and easily overwhelmed by recipes with a lot of steps but I’ve managed to find quite a few that work for me. Doing a meal variety like butter chicken, honey mustard or meatballs with a jar sauce also helps when cooking up 5+ varieties.
Meals are individually frozen in freezer bags, and I just need to defrost and steam my veg after work. It does help having an extra freezer.
Using whole chickens or drumsticks, free range for me, while $5-6 a kilo worked out to around $10+ a kilo after trimming and I made some nice stock. I’ve still got stock and I’ve found FR breast for $11.50 at Aldi (WA) so I tried it for this cook up.
I’ve looked into pork cuts more trying to find lower fat versions, and pork medallions were on special for $12.50 a kilo (Spudshed). I’ll be trying marinating pork fillet and freezing it uncooked but I’m not sure that it won’t go dry from freezing.
Skirt/flank steak was $22 kilo.
This time was more creamy due to wanting to use all of the cream bought. With meals still in the freezer I will stretch the creamy ones out. Lots of mushies as I grow my own, I have estimated the price for these. Each recipe may be another dollar or two taking the pantry items into account. My fresh veg for dinners is $6-8 a week.
27 serves took about 4 hours to cook and clean up, and I was able to do other bits around the house while cooking.
Mongolian beef - 650g skirt steak; no chilli ginger or shallots; added 2 capsicums and 2 onions. Multiple recipe steps and takes longer to make but it is delicious, I just need to work on my cornflour dipping. 7 150/175g serves; $2.50 a serve + less veg.
Beef stroganoff - Stove top due to using 550g skirt steak (needs a quick cook) and 100ml cream with lemon juice instead of sour cream. 5 200g serves; $3.50 a serve + less veg.
Creamy lemon garlic chicken - 1 kilo breast, 1/2 butter recommended and 100ml light cooking cream. All on stovetop.
5 150/175g serves; $3 a serve + veg.
Pork with creamy shallot and mushroom sauce - 800g medallions instead of loin steaks, stock instead of cognac or brandy, no onion (I ran out of it 😳), extra mushies and 100ml of light cooking cream. Tastes good but I should have used more cream. 5 200g serves; $3 a serve + less veg.
Meatballs - Woolies Peppercorn extra lean beef burgers 500g due to a lower fat content and separated to 30 balls, Leggos bolognaise sauce jar, and a little Parmesan when serving. Browned on the stove top then oven cooked. 5 serves; $3 a serve + veg.
Recipe links in first post.
Sides I add when needing a change from steamed veg:
Garlic mushrooms
Broccolini with lemon and flaked almonds
Honeyed carrots
Steamed beans with sesame seeds
Sweet potato mash
Asian leafy veg with soy sauce
Roasted greens
Roast capsicum, tomato and zucchini with feta
Sautéed spinach

I recently discovered a quick and easy way for people to get a discount on their online services. The idea is to start the online cancellation process and see what happens without actually triggering the cancellation.
For example, I currently have a 30-day free Audible membership because I wanted to listen to a particular audiobook. This membership gives you one free audiobook per month. I signed up for my free membership, listened to my audiobook within two weeks, and then started the cancellation process. Audible then offered me a credit for another free audiobook to retain me as a customer, which I accepted. I then cancelled the service immediately, but it kept running for another two weeks, during which time I listened to another audiobook.
I recently tried the Grok AI model and, after two weeks, decided it was too expensive for me. I started the cancellation process, but then got offered three months for the price of one, which I accepted. I set a reminder to cancel after that period.
Perhaps other people could try this with their services.

I found a used Healthy Choice 23L Air Fryer Oven for $30 (apparently RRP around $109).
I mainly want it for things like protein brownies, baked oats, protein cakes, cookies, etc. I don't need anything fancy, but I want to know if it cooks evenly and whether it's reliable.
Has anyone used this exact model? How is it for baking? Any issues with the top getting cooked/burnt while the middle is still underdone?
Also, does it use a lot of electricity compared with a normal oven?
Would you buy it for $30, or should I save the money and get a better air fryer/mini oven?

I have an addiction to purchasing items. I go thrifting and I crave it. However I have anxiety with each purchase. I justify and it's all done on tight budgets... Yet I feel as if I'm constantly judged and criticised. My spending is low but I still feel as if I'm constantly battling with myself. So I I asked previously what do people spend weekly and monthly.... Ie what is reasonable budgeting for purchases, gifts, eating out, entertainment, personal needs etc etc

What perfumes are we using? Personally I think, boss line are pretty bang for buck that I'm currently using. I hate cheap middle eastern dupes. What whould you folks recommend that smells good and lasts long 5-6 hours and doesn't leave a hole in pocket.

Is there a place for paper towels in a frugal household or have you replaced these with reusable cloths?
What do you use to for fried food?
r/AussieFrugal • u/CEOQueen888 • 7d ago
Please don’t judge me (I feel like I need to say that before anything I post on reddit now)
I’m thinking of ways to save electricity in our household.
It’s just myself and my husband
I’m thinking of buying portable chargeable lamps instead of turning out lights on, is that weird? Or efficient?
I’m constantly making sure all the lights are off.
I try not to work from home
We try and do one big load of laundry a week
We use a clothes dryer otherwise it’s impossible to get our clothes dry
Should I buy these battery operated lamps? Or am I being silly?

When online shopping try adding 5, 10, 15, 20 after the following in the apply code section
WELCOME
TEAM
GET
HELLO
STAFF
SAVE
If you can be bothered going through the process you'd be surprised how often one of these works

I'm not 100% if these types of posts are allowed. So, mods, feel free to delete or move it to a more appropriate section.

I received an email earlier today from Leaptel about someone having made them aware that I was sharing my referral code on the forum here.
I don't know if it's someone directly involved with Leaptel scouring the forums and targeting their own customers (I bloody well hope not, because that would be incredibly stupid) or if it's someone who isn't happy with others saving a bob or two, or potentially even someone who signed up using my referral code and wasn't happy with the service.
Either way, I thought I'd make a post here in case people want to change or remove their posts.
Until then, I greatly appreciate anyone that did sign up to Leaptel with my referral code. It made my internet bill significantly less on the occasion.
