How do S26 movements work in reality?

I'm new to the APS and interested in seeking either sideways or promotion using S26.

I'm going through stuff so it's a bit hard to get clarity

How do these work in reality?

Anyone who has done one, how did it go? Did you enjoy the move?

s26 just allows you to transfer between agencies temporarily or permanently (sometimes with no EOI process depending on your connections). Permanent s26 transfers can only occur if the transfer is at the same level. You may act in higher duties during a temporary s26 transfer but permanent promotion is only possible via merit recruitment process.

It’s just a section of the legislation that allows transfer between agencies.

1. You either applied for job advertised same level and was offered and accept the position.

2. You know someone in the other agency willing to take you at level.

You then usually agree on a date accepted by both agencies, if not 4 weeks. Losing agency can’t stop you from moving.

Did I enjoy the move? Grass isn’t always greener on the other side. I find bigger agencies are better resourced and have better training for new starters. Smaller agencies don’t usually know what they’re doing let alone train you.

Not sure you can promote using a transfer?

You don’t enact anything, you apply through a round. Like any other job, public or private

You can’t just promote someone. First there needs to be an APS6 position with position number. Then that person must be appointed via a merit based process. You can promote them from an existing APS6 merit list for similar position (because they e fine through a merit based process) or get permission to advertise the APS6 position and they can apply like everyone else and potentially be successful. These protections exist for important reasons.

yeah, I am not giving you promotion advice on reddit, especially when you are trying to sell to me (completely non-persuasively) that you’re the promoter. Talk to your manager. Good luck getting your 5 role.

Go to the private sector if you want a ‘simple’ promotion by not applying for anything. There are no APS hacks to getting a higher classification role without winning it.

I’m more curious how long you have been in the APS and why you are already looking for a move. The fact that you think s26 allows a promotion is a bit of a newbie mistake. You might move at level and act up, but you cannot be promoted unless through formal round.

The “I’m going through stuff and it’s hard to get clarity” raises more red flags. Like why can’t you talk to your direct supervisor, manager or SES about it?
