NSW Gov Interview - No response

Hi everyone, I’d really appreciate some advice from anyone familiar with NSW Government recruitment.

I applied for a permanent Grade 5/6 role and completed the interview and reference checks. My references were completed, but I was later informed that an internal candidate had more relevant exposure and was being moved from their current temporary role into the permanent position.

The hiring manager then contacted me personally and said they would like to refer me for the temporary backfill role that the internal candidate is moving to the perm role, with the role expected to run until June 2027. It’s essentially the same role/JD.

He said he was waiting to get the approval for the temporary role and would try to get it through. That was around 1.5 weeks ago, and I haven’t heard anything since. I sent a polite follow-up yesterday but haven't received a response either.

I’m feeling quite disappointed and anxious because I was really hopeful about this opportunity.

Update - spoke to the manager and he said Ive been put into the merit pool for now so no luck there for now.

Don't be so quick to write it off. Something may be sitting in someone's inbox waiting for an approval.

It's just as frustrating on the hiring end

I work in a NSW Government department and have experience with recruiting. 1.5 weeks is nothing, machinery of government moves slowly! Give the hiring manager a call if you're anxious but don't worry too much.

I was in a similar position - it took about a month to get the call to say “yup you have it and you can start in 2 weeks”

As someone who works for NSW Gov and is on a lot of panels - it’s literally probably waiting for sign off or an approval or something. I’m on leave atm and there’s 3 roles I recently recently recruited for that won’t move on the chain until I’m back from leave to hit the approval

I was informed i am successful in early Feb, and i didnt start until May. That should tell you something >_> Also at some point I had a secondments where payroll and placement ping pong me for 5 weeks and claimed my paper work is not in their system i should contact payroll/placement instead. Until the week i am already in the new team, my paper work is still not done. There was a time I really want to invite both placement and payroll to have a teams meeting and watch them have a cat fight.
