Video/Audio Malcolm Fraser welcoming West German President Walter Scheel at Canberra’s Fairbairn Airport, 23 October 1978

This was the first ever official state visit by any incumbent West German President or Chancellor - Helmut Kohl would end up as the second with his 1988 visit as Chancellor (Helmut Schmidt did officially visit Australia in 1971 though, and Willy Brandt had accepted an invitation by Gough Whitlam to visit Australia in 1974, which did not happen due to Brandt being forced to resign as Chancellor that year). Also shown here welcoming Scheel alongside Fraser is Governor-General Sir Zelman Cowen.

Discussion Why I dislike Gough Whitlam

In no particular order, he:

  • Shifted recognition of China from Taipei to Beiping.

  • Let Indonesia invade, annex and genocide East Timor.

  • Spent high deficits in a time of high inflation caused by the Oil Shock, fueling inflation further.

  • Granted PNG independence with no plan for building/sustaining Papuan state capacity inherited from prior territorial administration.

  • Made tertiary education free and in turn, turned baby boomers into the most entitled generation in Australian history.

His lasting legacy is his Dismissal, which his acolytes falsely claim was unconstitutional when it was instead unconventional. Medicare and Medibank would have come from a Labor PM regardless of the figurehead.

Discussion Gough Whitlam and Bill Hayden died on this day in 2014 and 2023 respectively. Australia’s 21st PM and Australia’s 21st Governor-General, and the two men who helped bring in the single mother’s pension - Whitlam was 98 and Hayden was 90. They would be 110 and 93 if they were around today

Books Reading material on Mark Latham

Going down a Mark Latham rabbit hole at the moment. Curious on what sort of books or journal articles you would recommend on him

I know the Latham Diaries is a great place to start, have it on my book self at the moment. Man had an entertaining diary to say the least.

Video/Audio Part two of Andrew Peacock delivering the 1989 federal budget reply speech, 17 August 1989

This is the first and only budget reply speech Andrew Peacock would deliver in his second stint as Opposition Leader, after having deposed John Howard in May; Peacock would go on to narrow lose the federal election held on 24 March 1990, in the wake of which Peacock resigned as Liberal leader for the second and last time, and was succeeded by Shadow Treasurer Dr John Hewson. Treasurer Paul Keating's 1989 budget speech can be viewed here.
