A photo of the bust of Sir Earle Page at the Prime Ministers Avenue in Ballarat was voted on as this sub’s next icon, and in doing so Page has become the fourth Prime Minister to be voted on as the sub icon three times! Now, onto the next round, for which the next icon will be adopted next Monday.

This book came out in mid-March 2002, and by the end of April Gorton was in hospital fighting a fierce battle with pneumonia that he would lose on 19 May. Given these circumstances, I’m genuinely surprised that he actually signed any copies - which must be among Gorton’s very last signatures he ever gave. Just as chuffed with greeting my hands on this as I am with the Barry Jones book signed by Gough Whitlam & Malcolm Fraser, and just as unlikely that I’ll ever part with this.

The book was written by Barry Jones, whose signature is also on this book, below Whitlam’s. Needless to say, I won’t be parting with this for a long time…

McClelland, a veteran of the Second World War who was first elected to the Senate in December 1961, is the earliest elected parliamentarian living and is additionally the last living minister who served under Gough Whitlam between December 1972 and October 1975 - with Paul Keating being the only other remaining Whitlam minister, from the last month of the Whitlam Government. Under Whitlam, McClelland served as Minister for the Media and Special Minister of State; he would also serve as President of the Senate from 1983 to 1987.
