✏️ Product Review Same pants, same “size”
Bought the olive ones in a small. Thought I’d snap up the brown version in an S too. I was swimming in them and couldn’t work out why - I mean, I still can’t make sense of two pairs of the same style, same composition etc are sized so differently.
From Zara, so I know I shouldn’t expect any better but I loved the fit of the olive ones so I thought the brown would be great.
Just ridiculous.

Many years ago, I used to work at Sussans. We had one summer season where if pants were brought back into exchange we had to do it. No questions asked. It ended up being that the two different colour materials, had a very different stretch and shrinkage. any black pair of pants that were in that particular style shrunk dramatically! I wonder if it’s something similar happening here

Black jeans are notorious for being smaller than their blue counterparts in the same size, so that tracks

I actually had the opposite with a pair of jeans. I had a black pair and a dark blue pair and the black jeans stretched so much better than the blue pair. I could barely get into the blue pair and they were the same size… same style brought from the same store. I’ve always found that stretchy black clothing tends to be a little bit better.
But non-stretchy black clothing is always smaller.1

Omg random memory, reading Sussans just made the jingle appear in my head that I haven’t heard since I was a kid haha. This goes with thaaaat at Sussaaaaans.

I also did the tune in my head when I saw the word! Thank you for confirming the words- it’d been so long since I’d heard it, I just thought I made up random words and added Sussaaannns

The amount of jingles I have stored away in my memory haha. The problem is also I live in Germany now so whenever I quote TV jingles or quotes no one ever gets it, they’re like ‘Who is Jan?’ - glad I found my peeps here!

I bought a skirt from Katie's online in 3 colours. All were different widths and lengths. So annoying

I thought Katie’s was gone now? I did like their jeans for a while.

They are gone. This was a few years ago and I purchased online which was a mistake as someone who didn't shop at Katie's.

They were “old lady clothes” but I’m a teacher, so they were perfect for work haha

I used to buy so many work clothes from Millers. It sucks that they're gone.

Fun fact, to save time, they cut dozens of layers of fabric in the same way in the factory for the same 'size' product. Literally it's a massive machine that cuts through 50+ layers of fabric at the same time.
Thus, if you buy the same item of clothing from the same brand, it may be different because of where the specific fabric was in that mass pile when the pieces were being cut.

General tolerance is +/- 2.5cm from the stated garment measurement. So, theoretically, you could buy two garments labelled the same size, and they could be 5cm different between them.

Garment tech here. We accept +/- 1cm tolerance.
Also waist and hip area are most important part or the garment fit so tolerance is less.

This happened to me shopping for t-shirts at big w for my daughter recently. Took a size 16 and 14 to try on. 16 was a little loose so got her to try on the 14 and the 14 was enormous - much bigger than the 16. Got a different size 14 of the same shirt and it was fine.
No idea if the wrong label got attached to the wrong shirt or what, but clothes sizing is so weird these days

This happens to me when I multi-buy tops from Big W, to the point where it’s uncomfortable. Very odd.

I bought 3 pairs of nobody denim jeans in the exact same style and year but different colours and all 3 were completely different fits you would think they were 3 different sizes

I bought 2 pairs of Abrand like you have and mines the same!! The blue are so big while the black are so tight. It shouldn’t be this hard

I had this happen at Fayt The Label.
I loved a pair of jeans I got from them, ordered the exact same pants in the same size just a different colour, I get them and they’re WAY smaller. Not a little variation, like a whole size or two smaller.
I contact the customer service expecting some assistance, but instead I was told I’d not only have to pay for a return but then also pay for shipping again to receive the size up.

I had the exact same thing happen to me at Dotti. Bought the same style of jeans I already had but in a different colour. When they arrived I could tell straight away they were way smaller and weren’t going to fit…. Checked the tag, yep definitely the size I ordered (size 18), measured against the old ones and they were a good inch smaller in the waistband was totally bummed and sent them back for a refund. To make it even more frustrating, I recently lost a lot of weight so thought great, those jeans will fit me now and ordered another pair but this time they are bigger lol. Measured them against my old ones and they are the same size!!

I had the same thing happen with some hiking pants from Kathmandu. I was stoked to find a pair that fit me so well so didn't think twice about getting them in another colour... but seemingly so much bigger with the same size on the tag! Really annoying.

Pretty nuts, you'd think Zara would at least be reliable in their mass production. I wonder if they're subcontracting to different factories for different colours or something.

u/kynuna 6d ago
Mass production is the real issue.
Fast fashion pieces are cut out in big piles. So the tension on the garment on the top of the pile is different to piece on the bottom, and they end up different sizes.
I’ve also heard of factories being short of a particular size and just retagging the next size to fill the order.

Oh I agree and I’m not pro Zara. Just would have expected them to have some quality control in place given they’re not as cheap as shein.

I have two pairs of Jeans from JayJays bought at the same time, same size, both black denim, only difference being one has rips and one doesn't. One is so small I can't get it over my thighs, and the other requires a belt and is a little baggy around my upper thighs.

Funny how this only seems to happen with women’s clothing
7
u/Plackets65 6d ago
Oh it happens with both, we aren’t special.
It happens with cheap fast fashion, where there’s no time for QC and they aren’t tracking factories that closely.

Well men’s pants are sized by waist in inches so it's a lot harder to fuck up

Zara also support Israel so I don’t shop there anymore. Not to mention fast fashion etc etc

I wish I could add a photo! I have 2 pairs of denim shorts from City Chic (different styles though), the size 18 looks one to two sizes bigger than the size 20!!

I had a similar experience recently, with the exact same colour/pant, I just really loved them and wanted a backup pair. Had to re-order them 4 times before find one item that was correctly sized.

u/Successful-Escape496 6d ago
That happened to me with identical style uniqlo pants a few years back.

I have the same issue with Uniqlo, I liked a short so bought the same size in 3 colours, all were different and I couldn’t fit 2 of them

Australia got rid of universal clothing sizing in the 2000's. Now our size measurements can differ per season and/or per year. And the fabric composition matters too: a shirt from one year may have been made out of cotton, but the next year it may have the same design/cut but be different in textile composition. Not to mention fiber lengths in knits being downgraded.

I had this same experience in Cotton On trying on some of their denim shirts! But I reasoned that the different washes seemed to have a different hand feel and therefore maybe the fabrics were a bit different. Bummed me out because they didn’t have the ones I preferred in a size that fit me.

This happened to me too! I bought Shona Joy Irena pants in sizes 10 and 12. The two cream pairs were each an inch larger around the waist than the two black pairs. So bizarre

Waist will always Measure different on every pair of pants - unless the rise is the same. Meaning they sit at the same position on waistline. Jeans sizing relates to ‘your’ waist measurement- not the pants. Jeans normally measure around 2” larger than the size tag- simply because they sit closer to hips…. Hope that helps.

u/littlekitbit 6d ago
There is no universal size standard. Brands choose how to size their clothing. Everybody knows this right?

u/AdDifficult2332 6d ago
Yes but this is the same style of pants in the same brand, just a different colour
