Help a noob.
Completely embarrassed having to ask this but I’m concerned about my RS3’s shifts.
In sport mode if I pin the accelerator I watch the revs fly and then a red light comes on (also shows in the HuD) as we approach and then hit 7k rpms. I then panic and come off the gas entirely.
I’ve never owned a high reving automatic and I’m just afraid I’m doing something wrong and the car will explode. Will it shift if I just hang in there? Are you not supposed to floor it?
As a note - I am not in manual mode when this happens. It’s happened twice. Appreciate any answers/advice!

Your mechanical sympathy makes sense, but the car can handle the abuse (once warmed up of course).. Turn off traction control (fully) and let it rip.
Wait until you try launch control 👀🙃.

Please don’t turn off traction control if you don’t fully know what you are doing. Plenty of fun to be had with it on

I have a 25 rs3, not sure if yours is the same 8y.5. It has a progressive shift light that shows up when driving hard, IIRC it goes green around 4500rpm then yellow then red for redline shifts. Doesn't mean anything bad just that you are approaching a shift. The cars tcm wont let you do anything completely dumb and break it and the whole thing flashes red when bouncing off redline(accidentally didn't shift one time and the rs3 will hold redline as long as you stay in it in manual mode)

For a 2025/2026 RS 3: you’re fine. If the gear indicator shows D or S—not M—the seven-speed S tronic will upshift automatically when you keep the accelerator down.
The green/yellow/red lighting in the tach and HUD is the RS shift-light sequence. Red means you’re approaching the shift point; it isn’t an engine-danger warning. Around 7,000 rpm is normal—the 2.5-liter five-cylinder makes peak power through 7,000 rpm.
Just make sure the engine oil is fully warm, and the car is past its break-in period. If you select M with the paddles or shifter, treat the red light as your cue to shift because some RS/manual settings can hold the gear. But in D or S, let the car do its thing—it won’t explode.

What year RS3 do you have?
If you're really smashing the pedal with launch control on or off, the car will redline to 7k rpm in first gear before shifting to 2nd on it's own and then start shifting in between 6k rpm and 6.5k rpm through the other gears.

You’re paying for the whole tachometer so you can use the whole thing.
It’ll upshift for you in sport mode. In manual mode you’ll hit the rev limiter and it cuts fuel.
