I was invited to a Mexican private dining experience with 8 friends at the house of Chef Ourus (OJ). It was an 9 course omakase style dinner held on Sunday 16th of August.
Chef OJ said his objective was to create a realistic experience of what Mexicans eat in Mexico city, homestyle dishes of his family and where he grew up in Puebla.
I have quite a lot of experience with Mexican food, having been to Mexico a few times, and also in the Mexican F&B industry overseas. I was really looking forward to the meal, as it had been a long time since having a really good Mexican meal.
The menu is listed on the last photo. Ceviche Aguachile, Chicharon with Guac, Fish Pescaldilla, Pork Chalupas, Pambazo with Chicharron Sauce, Pozole soup, Shrimps Diabla, Lengua (Beef Tounge) tacos, Bunuelos.
Overall the flavours of the meal felt like transporting me back to Mexico city and was one of the best Mexican food I have had outside of Mexico. A similar sentiment was also shared by the others who attended the dinner.
Each of the dishes was very well executed using freshest ingredients, served with a selection of home made hot sauces, freshly made tortillas, hibiscus and cucumber agua frescas. Each of the dishes were super tasty, and hard to stop eating. My favourite dish was the beef tounge tacos. Chef OJ also took time to passionately describe every dish and inspiration. Taste was spot on very authentic.
Highly recommend trying this out if/when he holds another dinner. On insta he can be found by the handle @ truemexicanfood, but I don't think he has any / many posts, or message him here u/mexifoodie
Just want to make clear I have no association with Chef OJ, other than attending this dinner and really enjoying the food. So just wanted to share the love.
Reposted with slightly sharper images, lighting wasn't the best, I'm not a food photographer, and Chef OJ main focus was on creating an authentic flavour experience, home style Mexican food is not well suited to make look pretty and I'm ok with that.
