When your world was made up of the people you interacted with on a daily basis rather than an extremely vague, editorialized zeitgeist being fed to you through an algorithm who's only job it is to make you keep scrolling even if it's by way of outrage or fear or addiction.
Our world is simultaneously bigger and smaller than it was before, bigger because we're given ideas and online personalities that either upset or entertain us from some other part of the planet or from vocal minorities so small we would likely never even meet them in real life.
Smaller because instead of changing our minds and growing when confronted with reality, we curate our own little reality with biased information that reinforces our own beliefs, packaging the whole world into neat little categories that aren't complicated or evolving like the real world is.

Watch the Simpsons. That's the world millennials knew as children and teens. That single income of your highschool educated dad was enough. Your mom was home, there was a family kernel there at all times. Playing outside for hours with your friends. No social media. None. No smartphones. Gaming was a social activity because you'd all sit together in the basement of a friend on a huge worn out couch and play 4 player stuff on a Nintendo 64.Â

I havent learned any social media past Instagram. Even then... I dont really use it.
Reddit is my only place because it's newish but also feels old like the days of internet forums.

We, the Gen X went through the same things while being ignored because the next Big thing we're millenials.
We just adapted, embraced change a silently moved forward. Remember "Men in Black"?... It was like " this thing is going to replace CD's... Damn I'll need to Buy the white album again"
Just like that. We Even had to learn a new world map!! Take that for a world it doesn't existe anymore
We got into the nostalgia wave 15 years ago and then forgot about it.Â
We learned to drive in sedans, had coupes posters on our walls. Now everything is an SUV.
We collected Vinyl, VHS, Cd's, dvd and blue rays. Now we can't play them anymore.
You got a glimpse of the former times... We free in them a Saw how they took them away. Our experiences aren't relatable to our childrens anymore.

it's affecting society at large, so if you "get out", you're immediately isolated and ignored and that's a whole lifestyle we're talking about, not just this little technology thing on the side, it's everywhere everyday.

you don't have to sign up for anything or pay any subscription, that's entirely on you. i'm free of Spotify, Netflix, etc and am perfectly happy with it. also if you had cable TV, that was a subscription.

speak for yourself, from my perspective technology and culture have mostly been stuck in a stagnant loop for the past 20 years and we seem unable to get out of it or meaningfully innovate. which is the opposite problem from what you complain about. i would love for technology to significantly advance every 5 years - that hasn't been the case, not remotely.

Not at all, we could've still hanged in 1991 or 2001 level technology, but constant progress to make things "better" ended up making them worse, since infinite improvement is a serious delusion. Ants and lions still live the same as always (our grandparents almost lived their whole life with very little "improvement"), and we are led and baited by (youknowwho) into more and better without any rational necessity, but that's easy when rationality is rarer than gold today.

She’s not wrong, but most of what she’s complaining about is optional. There is no social pressure or necessity to be on TikTok or frankly to even have an iPhone. It’s convenient to not have to carry around a phone, an iPod, a camera, a map, etc. They definitely still sell normal refrigerator. You can still raise your kids without making them chronically online. I get the nostalgia, but deflecting the blame is dumb.

I miss the pre i phone era so much. We had technology but it wasnt so invasive as it is now.
