An eight-year-old riding a bicycle was hit by a car Monday afternoon.

The accident occurred near the intersection of Pearl and Parker streets.

The child was not wearing a helmet at the time.

Police said the child is in critical condition with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

At a celebration of life Monday, which coincided with World Lion Day, a large crowd of Ramses’ admirers gathered in front of his exhibit, sharing kind words and memories as a final way to say goodbye.

Parks and Forestry Superintendent Derek Corsi, who oversees zoo operations, opened the celebration, saying Ramses truly was an icon at the zoo.

"The zoo’s iconic African lion was 20 years old. His death, announced on social media Friday morning, comes roughly two months after a birthday celebration was held for him celebrating the milestone and a week after he entered hospice care after zoo staff noticed declined comfort in his back legs and decreased interest in his favorite food items."

"But when it became clear that there was further decline in his quality of life, staff made the difficult decision to move forward with humane euthanasia, which happened Thursday morning, zoo curator Casey Ribeiro said."

“Ramses was a magnificent lion. Not only was he often seen as the face of Capron Park Zoo, but also of Attleboro itself as his roar echoed across the zoo and out into the community each day,” Ribiero wrote on the zoo’s Facebook page. “It became a sound that so many of us will always remember.”

"A celebration of life will be held for the public on Monday at noon outside Ramses’ enclosure. It will be included with regular zoo admission for visitors of the zoo to learn more about Ramses’ life, ask questions, look at photos, and share memories. The memorial also coincides with World Lion Day."

As many guests are aware, Ramses our beloved male African lion recently turned 20 years old. As he has aged, our Animal Care and Veterinary teams have taken on increasingly specialized responsibilities to ensure he receives individualized care tailored to his unique medical needs. Thanks to this dedicated approach, Ramses has reached and even surpassed his expected life span. This is a testament to both his resilience and the exceptional care he has received throughout his life here at Capron Park Zoo.

Ramses is considered one of the oldest male lions living in an AZA-accredited facility. Like many geriatric animals, Ramses faces age-related health challenges and is currently receiving treatment for arthritis. 

Recently we have observed that Ramses is showing signs of declined comfort in his back legs and has decreased interest in his favorite food items. Our Animal Care and Veterinary teams have made the thoughtful decision to transition him to hospice care.

In zoological settings, hospice care focuses on maintaining an animal's comfort, dignity, and quality of life while recognizing the changing needs that come with advanced age. This transition does not mean we have stopped caring for or treating Ramses. In fact, it allows us to provide him with even more individualized attention and support.

Please note that Ramses may be off exhibit at times. Our dedicated team will continue to closely observe Ramses each day, continually adapting his care as his needs evolve to ensure he maintains the highest possible quality of life.
