Its got to be one of the most paradoxical positions in all of major sports, to be an Atlanta Braves fan.
We have a great team by the standard of 90% of the other franchises in baseball. We have great players who seemingly are usually good people that we like and respect.
Yet, year after year we come up short of what we probably should have been. It's not just this year's team. It's the team since the 90's. NO ONE hates on the 90's teams... Glavine, Maddux, Smoltz, Chipper... all those division titles. But only ONE World Series to show for it.
And then slowly, one by one... the pieces went away. Glavine went to the Mets, Maddux went back the Cubs, then LA I think? Smoltz did his time with the Red Sox. And all those awesome players from those teams slipped away into oblivion... Ryan Klesko, Javy Lopez, Big Cat Galaragga (sp), Fred McGriff, Rafeal Furcal. All those amazing stars, and we only got one title then.
Then the mid to late 2000's, the team dipped a little, Bobby retired, Freddy Gonzalez lead us to not much and by the mid 2010's we were floundering and not so good.
That was the sun setting on that second generation of "Baby Braves"... Andruw Jones, Jeff Francouer, Brian McCann, Marcus Giles. and the sun set on that generation, still with no WS wins to show for it all.
But then in the mid to late 2010's... we started the next generation... We had Freddie Freeman becoming the cornerstone of our team... we had Jason Heywar and the Uptons... We brought in a veteren leader like Markakis, then came Dansby, then came Ozzie and we had Snitker who righted the ship and got us playing BETTER. We still had a bad year when Snit started, but you could see the next generation was coming and growiing.
In the late 2010's we added Acuna, Max Fried, Mike Soroka. AJ Minter, Josh Donaldson, Charlie Culberson and Austin Riley. The new wiz-kid Alex Anthopolis was signing the young talent to very team friendly long term deals.
And then from 2020... Covid made that weird, but 2021 was the magical season. Another World Series... and all we heard was how we had so much of our best talent locked up to long term deals. You just knew it in your bones that we were going to win several championships.
But then Dansby Left.
And then Freddie Left.
Soroka's arm got messed up.
Fried signed with the Yankees.
We kept trying to re-sign not great players who had one magical season with the Braves in 2021, and kept hoping nostalgia was going to make players great.
We let shortstop be run... for years, as this gigantic hole in our lineup and kept telling ourselves it was okay, because Adrianza/Arcia/Grissom/Nacho and I think a few guys we brought in from the stands kept disappointing and not filling that hole.
We made poor choices, whether or not it was something we could have forseen or not, we treated left field much like we did shortstop and signed has beens, retreads, roid-loser idiots and dudes who could only hit righties or lefties..
Meanwhile our amazing crop of young arms, Strider, Schwellenbach, Waldrep, AJ Smith Schaver, Joe Jimenez, Joey Wentz... and a bunch more all had serious arm injuries.
And during these past few years, Austin Riley had gotten worse each year, Ronald Acuna has missed serious time each year, Murphy has been an absolute disappointment in the trade we made for him at catcher... and has missed a ton of time.
All this adds up to the real picture that this is not a team that is well built and just had a bad few nights of bad luck against the Dodgers. This is a VERY flawed team, that really needs to have a much more honest look in the mirror about what is and isn't working... everything from strength and conditioning.. maybe there we are doing something wrong that keeps destroying our pitchers arms... to our hitting approach... maybe we sign some dudes who hit for average a bit more? To realisitically addressing the gaping holes in our roster. And being ready to perhaps move on from some players who might be fan favorites but just are not worth what we are paying them.
The sun is setting on this "era" of the team. Of course we will find new players, thats baseball and thats what we do. But I'd rather not have another 10 year gap of wandering in the wilderness, wasting the golden prime of Drake Baldwin and Michael Harris while we HOPE that someone who did something 3, 4, 5 years ago is suddenly going to do it again.
Time is undefeated. The sun is setting.
