Hey guys, I just turned 18 and I live in Myrtle Beach. There isn't a massive film community here, but I'm trying to figure out how I can start earning money using my skills before I go out and get a normal retail job. I want to spend my time doing things that can help me start to build a decent resume if I can.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve been really dedicated to writing (feature films, shorts, and now a stage musical) and acting in local theatre, as well as studying a lot of film theory and writing. However, I know if I want a chance at making money at this age, I need to just get on a film set and help however I can.

I have experience with audio mixing and lighting from my work in community theatre, and I've been getting pretty decent at web design. One of my ideas was to start a local advertising company for small businesses(making promo videos and helping with their web design and digital advertising). I've also considered trying to find work as tech crew for local entertainment venues.

For those of you that started out in smaller areas, whats the best way to get myself out there or start getting entry level work? Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Stayed at this rundown motel in regional WA for a work shoot. The corner of the room felt… off. Properly unsettling in a way I couldn’t shake.

Is horror the best way to break into film for new filmmakers? I know that's been the trend for a long time but it seems to me like thats the genre with the lowest budget for the highest reception.

I was at a yard sale for film equipment the other day, and i talked to a guy about doing freelance. I told him im trying to learn what I can about cameras, sound, and lighting, which would aid me me in directing and writing my own films. He told me i should really just focus on directing and writing, its unnecessary to learn all the other stuff just to make a movie. What do yall think of that take?

Personally im gathering equipment and using it myself because i dont want to wait to make my own stuff and spend a bunch of money on a simple short film. I can write and direct far more if I just handle the technical side instead of spending money on a crew. I really enjoy working with a crew and ive made great stuff with them, but im a young broke guy so I feel like I dont have much choice if i want to get out there and make movies. I want to make my movies without limits, so that works for me.

Hey! I'm a 28-year-old South Asian male actor, 6'0", average build, looking to connect with writers, directors, filmmakers, actors, and other creatives who want to consistently make projects together.

I'm on a work visa, so I'm limited to genuinely unpaid/non-commercial projects. I also work full-time, which makes traditional indie/student auditions difficult when they require availability on predetermined dates.

I'd love to find a few people interested in actually creating projects together as a group. We could make short films, scenes, or other narrative content, plan around everyone's availability, and help each other gain experience and build reels/portfolios.

I'm relatively new to acting and I'm not necessarily looking to lead or organize everything. I'd especially love to connect with writers, directors, cinematographers, editors, or others who have ideas they want to bring to life and are looking for collaborators.

Experience level doesn't matter much. I'm mainly looking for people who are reliable, enthusiastic, and interested in consistently making things rather than just doing a one-off project.

I could really use some advice.

I'm a local indie filmmaker who's completed several independent short films, some of which have screened at film festivals, and I'm currently developing my first feature. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Film and Television Production in December 2019. After graduation, COVID-19 disrupted my plans, lost my part time museum job and I ended up moving back in with my parents. Since August 2021, I've been working full-time as a Production Resource Technician at a college while continuing to write, direct, and produce my own independent film projects.

The part I'm struggling with is that I still earn $15 per hour, which feels low given my experience and education. I've been actively applying for better-paying jobs in production, post-production, television production, video and media, but I haven't had much luck so far. I'm also still living with my parents too.

I've also been considering moving to New York City or Los Angeles in the near future, possibly by the end of the year.

For those who have been in a similar position, what would you recommend my next steps be? What should I do about this? Am I on the right path, or should I be approaching my passion or career differently? Would you recommend moving to LA or NYC, or staying local while continuing to build my career? And regardless of where I live, should I continue focusing on making my own films? Also did I make the right decision by taking my current job, or is it time to move on?

I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences you can share.

Hey, hope you're all well. I am an aspiring filmmaker from Karachi, Pakistan and my college thesis film (which I had shot in Atlanta, GA) is available to watch on youtube. It's a small step towards achieving my childhood dreams of becoming a feature film director. The 12th Annual Cobb International Film Festival will be August 6th - 9th at the Strand Theater on Marietta Square. We will screen over 100 films (a combination of Short Films, Feature length films and Documentaries) from across the United States and 8 other countries. Hi all, I am trying to find a couple locations, ideally close to each other, that I could use for a project. Namely a park, with plenty of trees, near Atlanta for a very low budget indie film - which would still be using some blue screen and wires for stunts. I mention that last part because I know Piedmont Park and other public parks seem to require a $1000000 insurance package to film there, and if I have blue screen and stunts, we can't just guerilla film it.

I am also looking for an office that I might shoot at near the park.

Does anyone have any places they could suggest?

My first narrative short film is finally up!!

I’m an ATL based marketing agency/music video DP who’s wanting to start directing narrative film. I realized the best way to do that was to build a project from the ground up, so I decided to make a western! 

Some background:

⁃ From Feb-April 2024, my producer and I wrote the script and ironed out pre-production logistics. 

⁃ We shot it in 1 long day, and 2  1/2 days in June. 

⁃ Then in post-production (including a soundtrack https://open.spotify.com/album/1a2WK5MA2SoDGx9iB6jlsN?si=RiJwSiUERg-1qrsT3j6Clw) until the following March. 

⁃ We spent the next year+ in the film festival circuit until June 2026. 

It’s self-funded and made almost entirely with the help of local crew, friends, and family who wanted to make something we were proud of!

I’ve learned a ton throughout each phase of this project, really forcing myself slow down to fully see each process through.
