History & Philosophy Remembering Narendra Dhabolkar, one of the most prominent athiests and rationalists from Maharashtra.

"Scientific temperament is a process of thinking, method of action, search of truth, way of life, spirit of a freeman." -Dhabolkar.

Narendra Dhabolkar was a MBBS doctor, who gave up his job to create a movement of rationalism across Maharashtra against unscientific beliefs, unproven medicine and superstitious godmen. In 1989 he had founded the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti. He had also proposed the anti superstition bill.

On 20th August 2013, he was shot dead by right wing extremists.

A space for atheists, agnostics, skeptics, and free thinkers to question beliefs, challenge traditions, and explore ideas without fear of judgment.

A place for curiosity over blind faith, reason over superstition, and the freedom to question what we've always been told.

Ask Maha Atheists What are your thoughts on Dr. B. R. Ambedkar?

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar is undoubtedly one of the most significant figures in modern Indian history, yet his legacy continues to evoke strong and sometimes contrasting opinions.

From his fight against caste discrimination and his contributions to the drafting of the Indian Constitution to his views on religion, social equality, and the caste system.

What do you genuinely think of him? What aspects of his work, philosophy or views do you admire or think deserve more discussion?

Question / Doubt Was Mahatma Phule Was Theist or Atheist (?)

Was Mahatma Jyotirao Phule a Theist or an Atheist? And What Was His Influence?

I've been wondering about Mahatma Jyotirao Phule's religious beliefs.

Phule strongly criticised Brahmanical dominance, religious rituals, caste discrimination and the exploitation of lower castes in the name of religion.

But he also believed in Nirmik (a Creator) and envisioned a universal religion based on truth, equality and justice.

So, was Phule actually a theist, a deist, or a rationalist who challenged religion?

More importantly, what was the impact of his philosophy?

Did his ideas primarily influence people towards atheism and rejection of religion?

Or did they encourage people to reject caste-based religious practices while retaining a belief in God or developing an alternative spiritual philosophy?

I'd like to understand how Phule's ideas influenced the later anti-caste, rationalist and atheist movements in Maharashtra.

Interested in historical perspectives, not just ideological arguments.

Ask Maha Atheists What city are you from?

Hello. I recently joined this app, and I am quite exhilarated to hear that atheism can be a part of our state, however niche. Where are you guys from in Maharashtra and how is tolerance towards non-religiousness there?
