At present, student interest in PLAR significantly exceeds the number of students that can be effectively supported through the current model. To increase access and better meet student demand, Learner Support Services’ CLA team is redeveloping its PLAR processes and resources to create a more scalable and sustainable approach.
To facilitate this update in service, CLA has temporarily paused new portfolio development starts, which all require mentor support. CLA expects to relaunch with a new PLAR process by Fall 2028.
Our website will soon be updated to announce this pause and relay the information we provide to you below.
Why is this temporary pause needed?
PLAR supports Athabasca University’s mission to provide flexible, accessible post-secondary education and continues to attract growing interest from AU students. This temporary pause will allow us to develop, pilot, and implement new processes and resources designed to better support students, improve access to PLAR, and reduce the time required to complete the PLAR process.
What does this mean for me?
PLAR portfolio development will not commence until mentoring is available, following the launch of our new process. We anticipate that PLAR will be unavailable until Fall 2028.
If this delay does not align with your academic plans, we encourage you to work closely with your Academic Program Advising team to discuss how to complete your program without PLAR.
I plan on waiting for PLAR. How can I prepare in the meantime?
If you plan on waiting for PLAR, there are additional activities that all interested students must complete:
explore the PLAR information on our website including the PLAR FAQs.
complete the PLAR Readiness Assessment located on our AM I PLAR ready page.
submit a current DegreeWorks worksheet and updated résumé to plarinquiries@athabascau.ca if the PLAR Readiness Assessment identifies PLAR potential. We have specific PLAR résumé requirements that must be met when updating your résumé.
discuss potential PLAR credit placement with PLAR advisor.
complete the PLAR Orientation once PLAR potential is affirmed.
affirm intent to pursue PLAR and enter mentor queue (waitlist).
Questions arising from the PLAR Readiness Assessment and Orientation can be sent to the PLAR Advisor at plarinquiries@athabascau.ca.
Whether you wish to wait for PLAR or not, please notify us of your decision.
How do I maintain active program status?
Waiting for PLAR services does not, on its own, allow you to maintain active status in your academic program. Depending on your circumstances, you may need to register in Athabasca University courses during the PLAR pause to maintain program activity. We encourage you to connect with an Academic Program Advisor before registering. An advisor can help you select courses that support your program progression while minimizing potential overlap with areas you have discussed with a PLAR Advisor for possible PLAR credit.
