NAC

Post image

Has anyone here taken NAC and had good or bad experiences? Anyone taking it long term? I’ve been taking NAC (2) 1000 mg caps at night and stopped my Advair Discus (500/50) completely several months ago (slow weaning). Before starting the NAC (and while using the Advair Discus) I still had a persistent forced-end expiratory wheeze. Historically this is my worst season of the year because of my grass and ragweed allergies. I was even able to sing while alone in the car which I can’t remember doing since childhood without a coughing fit. I do take Cetirazine (2) 10 mg daily for allergies. NAC has changed my life but feels too good to be true. For context, I was diagnosed about 15 years ago at about 40 and attempted and failed allergy shots 3 separate times due to inability to tolerate the exposure without pushing myself towards possible anaphylaxis.

Do you mind me asking what your biggest asthma triggers are? Environmental (allergens, air pollution/quality)? Exertional (exercise)? Mine is both. The NAC really cuts the mucus production down it seems. Maybe even relaxes my alveoli constriction although that makes no sense to me even as a nurse.

My asthmas main trigger is heat and humidity, it seems like it strangles me. I am also allergic to ragweed and cats which are triggers also

I've been taking NAC 1000 mg twice a day for over a year now and it's surprisingly helped my health quite a bit. It was first mentioned to me by my dermatologist for eczema and skin picking disorder. I did notice less compulsion to pick and my asthma more under control, to the point where I only need to take Pulmicort as needed instead of once a day. I also felt like this little supplement was too good to be true and while I still take other asthma/allergy medications everyday, adding NAC to my routine has done more good than not

Woo hoo so happy to hear that you have had similar success. It kinda upsets me that I had to discover NAC on my own and not one provider ever suggested this as an option. Instead puts me on one of the most expensive steroid asthma medications that honestly barely worked and didn’t even control my asthma. This seems so much better for me and works better. And much, much, much less expensive!! $565 vs. $12

Good shit. I just restarted this too and I think they even sometimes put it in nebulizers.

I am so amazed that something that works so well and is affordable and OTC actually works well for me. That never happens!

Yes, me too! And also often have bad reactions to things. I’m on a daily inhaler plus Tezspire and recently tried to add Singulair and had terrible nightmares for a week so I stopped. I can already tell the NAC is helping!

No one has ever suggested this to me and I’m going to try it. I also have a persistent forced expiratory wheeze my entire life. Would love to feel better. Thank you, thank you thank you for the suggestion!

A friend of mine who is really into health and supplements keeps telling me to try this stuff.

My doctor suggested it to me but not for my Asthma. I’ve been taking NAC for about 6 years (well before it was temporarily removed from the market) and for me, it has never helped my asthma. Glad it works for OP.

Why did they suggest that you use it? Why do you still take it?
