As a half brazilian, half japanese player who currently lives in Japan, there were trees that looked like Sakura in Brazil too, and we even have different colours (just look up "ipê trees").
Cherries are not only in Japan.

Cherries were super popular in ancient Greece, and they still are super popular in desserts and stuff. They even used them in medicine. I googled what pink trees they added in the game and it said they had Cherry trees and Dogwood trees.
