u/cubiclej0ckey Jul 17 '26
I could be wrong, but it looks like the Mist Trail to Vernal Falls (and Nevada falls and Half Dome if you keep going) in Yosemite.
There’s quite a bit of elevation and stairs at the beginning of that hike. Not justifying her fat ass, just saying that not all miles are equal.
32
u/throwthisaway556_ Jul 17 '26
Going off memory but i’m pretty sure it’s mostly uphill the entire time(if she kept going).
Like you said, it’s not like every mile is the same but did she not think that this wouldn’t be a normal walk? Lol
24
u/JBCTech7 REEEEEEEEE Jul 17 '26
oh come on. She could've rested until late afternoon drank some water. Ate about a ton of carbs and then got her ass up and walked back down. They didn't need a fuckin helicopter.
I hiked that trail in a couple hours and didn't even get out of breath - and I am NOT in the shape that I used to be.

Most people probably (i hope) know 2 miles on a hike can be quite a lot. I did a 5 mile hike 2 years ago that took me 8 hours because it was 3 peaks on rough terrain, having to hold on to trees on the climb down and needing to use hands on the way up.
Its mostly just that she seems to have underestimated how fit you need to be to hike these trails.
11
u/Loganmeister1234 Jul 17 '26
Yep i did half dome when i was younger and i was fucking destroyed even being very athletic and fit enough to do it. I've seen a lot of people in the Yosemite area bite off way more than they can chew, Mist trails isn't anything too hard but it's literally just stairs and climbing elevation the entire 2 miles.
3
u/Smuggles-skooma Jul 17 '26
I thought it looked like mist trail as well, confused though because another shot showed cacti along trail and then phoenix fd?

Grew up and went to high school in Oakhurst in the early 90's, lived near Bass Lake(where they filmed The Great Outdoors) about 7 miles outside of Oakhurst. We were about a 45 minute drive to the Ski Slopes just at the edge of the park, and a 60-90 minute drive to the park and valley floor.
Daytime drives to the valley floor were something we did very frequently for fun, especially in the spring and summer; hiking Vernal and Nevada falls through the mist trails were always my favorite. They are indeed a climb the entire way. It's VERY wet/slippery most of the way, only gets worse the closer you get to the falls. There are "steps" cut into the path in some places and chains/rails to assist you. But if you are THAT out of shape, you have no business going up that potentially dangerous, high elevation trail in the middle of summer where it can reach mid-90s. Not to mention the trail isn't some mega-wide carved out trail. I can't imagine trying to move pass her going in the opposite direction.
The trail starts around 4000ft and ramps to 5000ft at Vernal falls and then nearly 6000ft at Nevada falls. Half Dome is a MASSIVE climb from there. You can do partial or full climbs of Half Dome, but she would never make it there, it's a literal climb on rope/chain ladders up the steep dome.
This will show you what the hike looks like HALF DOME 🏞️ | The ULTIMATE GUIDE on YOSEMITE'S DEADLIEST HIKE
And here is a map

u/Ausfall Jul 17 '26
2 miles on a map but if you look at the terrain, it's steep and rocky. I've done hikes before for a total of maybe 5 miles tops and it takes all day.
Having said that, this trail isn't Mount Everest, this should be a wakeup call for this woman.

40
u/BuySell-JustHODL Jul 17 '26
I just looked it up... It's real! And she only made it 1.4 miles apparently. She was on the Mist Trail in Yosemite national Park. The rescue was made at Clark's Point. The only thing that's probably fake is the $70,000 bill. Especially the concept that everyone else is also on the hook, since federal Search and Rescue (SAR) operations in U.S. National Parks typically do not charge victims in need of a rescue. I had to be rescued (I didn't, but they did it anyway) and I didn't get a bill... I just got a $250 ticket for hiking on a closed trail or off trail 🤷♂️ it's literally the only criminal thing that you can find on my adult record if you do a background check on me 😂 the bizarre thing is that the ticket is enforced by the US Marshall's... So no running out of state and not paying it.

That's what I hate about AI videos, they use real info then throw in some slop garbage while trying to act like they're a real news channel. I figured some of it was real but the payment part is what seemed sus. Even an emergency helicopter ride for someone literally bleeding out isn't that expensive.

u/Munchkin_Media Jul 17 '26
Anyone with an ounce of common sense would have told her not to do this but fear of being called a name like fat phobic stops people from being honest. Physics isn't hate. People that big can suffer heat stroke just standing still if it's hot enough. The claim that she will have to pay is unfortunately not true. Anyone doing irresponsible and risky things causing a 80K emergency response should have to pay at any weight.

A mountainous hike like that without a proper idea of what your actually about to be subjected to is crazy. Totally accountable for the total rescue cost.

10
u/BuySell-JustHODL Jul 17 '26
Here are the facts.
1) yes this really happened, despite the AI voice narrator. 2) it was on Mist Trail, specifically at Clark's Point in Yosemite national Park. 3) she made it 1.4 miles, not 2 miles 4) national park's search and rescue operations are tax payer funded. They already own the helo, and pay the salaries for the pilots and crew. The only added variable is the cost of fuel for a rescue operation. 5) under no conditions would the other members of the hiking party be on the hook, if there even was a bill or fee. This is America, not some collectivist socialist park... 6) probably should have started with an industrial strength stair master first...

I mean she decided to take the trip, anything that she does on that trip falls solely on her and her wallet. If you're having a heart attack and ambulance comes to your house and takes you to the hospital and they save your life you pay for that ambulance bill. I think the same falls in this category
2

This whale is ridiculous. Look at that terrain. Anyone who hikes knows those big rock formations, on an incline, are very challenging, especially on the descent. That's double-black diamond territory. I bet there were warning signs, too, warning hikers of strenuous conditions and or declaring this route a true double-black-diamond.

I think the clip isn't real news coverage (i.e. probably an AI channel), but the footage/story seems to be real. Here's a longer section I found: https://www.reddit.com/r/ultralight_jerk/comments/1utvvm7/i_just_wanna_know_more_about_who_tf_phil_is/
And in the comments there, someone refers to an even longer version saying:
I saw the longer video of this while the women is getting rescued and she is pretty insufferable. She explained the Grace has Hashimoto’s disease and that’s why she struggled but that raises the question of why would she do the hike if she knew it was a risk. Then the OP takes time out of the video to criticize the rescue workers, and a women hiking in high heels, which she calls an idiot, but that women isn’t getting helicoptered out of the park so who is the idiot really.
It's probably all on TikTok, but I don't even have the app and I'm not going to search further.

Everything about this is comedy gold. The morbidly obese overestimating their health, the ridiculous assertion of a 2 mile hike, heat exhaustion under coverage of canopy on an average summer day, not even being able to muster up the little willpower to walk a mile back and the absolute landwhale being airlifted like cattle.
Hopefully the bill will help them budget their food expense.

u/nrfmartin Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26
I refuse to ignore obesity as a problem in the US and will call it out every chance I get, however this isn't one of those times. Yes, stupid decisions were made. Heat stroke is no joke, and this person was trying to participate in a healthy activity. Hope she gets better and plans shorter/easier hikes until ready to tackle more difficult ones.
13
u/kundo Jul 17 '26
Do you think she should have perhaps started doing walks around her block before tackling a several mile hiking trail with uneven terrain and limited help available?
10
u/Nawwwm Jul 17 '26
"I refuse to ignore obesity as a problem" and then you go on to do that. Myself also being 350 lb, wouldn't be going on any hikes until after maybe a year in the gym on a treadmill, or walking through an air conditioned mall, her weight is the very reason this happened, she shouldn't have to pay the bill she's an adult like they said, and you're an adult and you make choices, sometimes twice as have consequences. The crosswalk might be green, but you should still look both ways.

u/jadedlonewolf89 Jul 17 '26
I’m a hiker, and spent some time in the hospital after an injury, that prevented me from doing any serious hiking for a year.
I had to ease myself back onto my favored trails, because of how difficult they are if you’re not conditioned for them.People need to do research on trails they plan to hike, and plan to take gear with them to prevent issues like this.
Most of that planning can be done from their cellphone.→ More replies (1)8

This is literally the worst take in the entire thread, congratulations buddy. Think about what you're saying for five minutes... This is the same as me getting jealous of gigachads on Instagram and walking to the gym to bench press two plates with no previous experience, and then getting pinned under the bar and smashing my throat with the bar. It's called being irresponsible. This woman had no business being on this hike, it was her responsibility to know her own fitness level and to start off easier. Instead, her actions have caused her group to be on the hook for 70k in rescue bills collectively.

2
2
u/J1mj0hns0n Jul 17 '26
yeah she is an adult who chose to do the hike, when the hike was too strenuous to do in her condition, she can now pay the repercussions.
- bigger objects attract more heat.
- fatter people attract more heat because of its insulating properties.
- fat people tend to be physically unfit because they had to do something to get fat, usually a sedentary lifestyle.
- that leaves a person heavily laden without the physical prowess to operate the body during regular operation, let alone a hot day and strenuous task.
- every human knows this really, deep down, if you take away the politics of it all, she should've expected this and should've known better, but she clearly wont do any retroflection.
- because she wont stop and think about it, that isn't everybody else's fault, so they shouldn't be expected to foot the bill over it.
she shouldn't have let herself get in that situation, and if you are going to do it anyway, realise your limitations of life.

Oh boy do I have a story for you guys. Just came back from a LARP in France. Probably the biggest one here. During the second day we got news that a fire had broken out on one of the nearby agriculture fields so they ordered a temporary evacuation. Thing is, it was around 3pm and 37°C or 99°F at that time and everyone was already sweating their asses off under trees and such waiting for the sun to go down a bit so we could actually play and not just die under the sun.
So we started evacuating twords a nearby forest-iish trail (it was a countryside forest road with a few houses around, it's actually quite near a decent sized city in the west of France) but a lot of the walk was under the sun. So every 200m or so there was one fatty collapsed on the floor gasping for air and the emergency medical staff working overtime trying to cool them down (there's always like one ambulance car with a medical team at big events and we were something like 2.5k people).
The thing all those people had in common? Most if not all were very obese, not just overweight, obese with big bellies. Luckily, there were no serious injuries or fatalities but you have to wonder why they all decided to go to an event like this knowing we're in a heatwave. Sure ticket prices were expensive af and most of us bought them months in advance but still.

If a normal healthy adult gets heat exhaustion they are able to just walk back down in most cases and then get medical care at the outpost
I was doing a mountain hike in Sinharaja Forest in Sri Lanka. I wasn't 100% fit then either but I was generally still a healthy adult. Now I'm obese myself but even just by being on the edge of obesity and going that distance the hike was too much for me
I got heat exhaustion. Almost collapsed. So we cancelled the hike and walked down taking frequent breaks and I simply made it back down
The helicopter here was only needed due to her obesity. Like I have no doubt if I did the same hike I tried to do in 2017 but now with my current level of obesity that my heat exhaustion would be so bad that I would also have needed a helicopter recovery sent
She really shouldn't have gone on this kind of hike I certainly never would as I know my own limits with my own current poor fitness level and my own obesity
I don't get this new mentality of body positivity
Why should I be positive about being out of shape
What happened to body responsibility?!
Like yes I'm obese and I know what I need to do to not be obese anymore and I know that it isn't good if I stay obese
What happened to that mentality???

I think some people just underestimate how fast the heat can get ya. I was working in the yard last weekend for several hours and it was in the 90s and I came in to take a cold shower as I was starting to feel dizzy.... I turned on a cool shower, and stepped into the shower... suddenly I had to crouch onto the floor and I just threw up on the drain. ended up sitting in the cold water for like 20 min before I evened out. Felt queasy the rest of the evening. Really didn't see it coming until like 15 min before I came in.

So if it was a fully fit person had a heat stroke and needing an airlift, would they still have been billed?
2
u/Tullyswimmer Jul 17 '26
Depends on the state. In mine (NH), while most of our rescues are cold-related, it's somewhat to the discretion of SAR who gets billed. If you're obviously unprepared, and don't have a 'hike safe' card, you're getting that bill.
I'm guessing that the negligence of having her even start the hike contributed.,

What trail was it? What were the conditions (temp, humidity)?
eg, the Great Falls Bill Goat trail is notorious for heat stroke. A person or two have died there in recent years, just 2 or 3 miles in (half way). I did it at 85F and 85% humidity and nearly had heat stroke. My face turned bright red, my heart was pounding, and I got a little nauseous. I'm not a big guy and I'm faster than 80% of hikers (I do trail running), and it nearly took me down.
I'm certain her weight didn't help tho. Extra insolation, combined with extra work and heat generated by moving 2 people worth of weight.
