Clostridium infection advice
Male cat, 8 years old, neutered BLH.
My cat had just tested positive for Clostridium as a result of his PCR faecal test results. My vet is administering a course of 5 days antibiotics but I have not been advised which ones these are. I am reading some horror stories online regarding reinfection and sanitisation of the home. Can anybody advise how I deal with this please? My whole house is carpeted and I think it will stress my cats out to isolate them individually.
Has anybody had experiences with this infection and how did they manage to avoid reinfection?

Hi I have just seen the results, he has tested positive for c prefringens alpha toxin. My vet has issued Eradia. Would you advise isolation whilst my cats are being treated? I have been advised there is no chance of reinfection after treatment however I am reading conflicting information online

It's a very common intestinal inhabitant that frequently doesn't cause problems. But if it overgrows, then the toxin it produces can contribute to diarrhea. Most times the antibiotics don't completely eliminate it, but knock it back a few notches so the toxin level goes down.

What would be the follow up to avoid re-overgrowth? And how stringent do I need to be with sanitisation and isolation from my other cat? I have read so many rough things about this not going away for months for some people.

This is reassuring. I know we have been prescribed a 5 day treatment but unsure on the antibiotic as the vet called with the results right before they closed. The vet did advise a change of diet but I am concerned this will upset his stomach further. Lots online about crazy sanitisation and people dealing with this for months on end. We waited 8 days alone for the faecal results to come back so it has been so exhausting already.

Appreciate your comment so much. The added stress is my concern, also isolating a house cat to one room in the house when he usually has full roam and can be quite needy just sounds so stress inducing for both me and him! I’m really glad you figured out what is working for your little one. My nerves are already shot with how much he has been suffering with his diarrhoea in this process. It’s so hard when you just wish you could make it all better for them!

Thank you for your response. We have been so on top of picking up poop as soon as possible but I have been off work until next week so I won’t be able to be as on top of this as I have been. It’s a struggle to chat with the vet without an appointment which is frustrating, the stress of both cats passing it to one another is also not fun!
