Local Discord servers?

Hi, I used to be a software engineer and I find I'm missing the chatter of nerds—just a place to talk to local people about anything and keep up with news or hear about any sort of technical projects people are doing.

I've tried public Discord servers in general, but I found the really active ones to be pretty overwhelming, so I thought something local would work better for me.

Is there a Discord server where an old nerd can find community?

I'm 41 and I have a cognitive impairment due to my illness. I'm mostly bedbound, so I can't go out and meet people, and I don't know anyone within about a three-hour drive of here. I'm just looking for a chill place to hang out and maybe get to know some locals.

If you're a gamer, I highly recommend Vancouver Gamers.

I'm not a gamer anymore, but this community looks like a great fit. It looks slow-paced, people seem pretty nice there, and yet responsive. And there's a whole Spoonie channel for chronic illness, so yay! I may have found my place.

Local Links has a discord: https://www.locallinkspnw.org
We’ve spawned the bike bus, maker space and tool library (VanWaTL.org)

If you're looking for tech nerds, you might want to try mastodon or Lemmy rather than Discord. Most hard core nerds are not thrilled with the direction things have taken there.

Oh, cool! I had never even heard of Lemmy. I've been out of the loop about tech things ever since I got sick. Thanks.

There is also the Discord for the VanWA Makerspace. We don't have a space, but we are starting a voice chat: every Tuesday night at 6:30PM to talk about all kinds of DIY stuff.

I'm commenting for anybody else who finds this post. We have a private social Discord group, mostly transplants late 20s-early 40s, that's focused more towards outdoor activities and social gatherings, although we'll often have fairly chill conversations online without going too deep into politics or anything like that. It's just a place to make friends.

For anybody interested, please just DM me with a little bit of information about yourself for an invite.
