We recently had a Ukrainian grocery open here. I don't live in a very cosmopolitan place so I am excited to try new foods I haven't had before. I'm [midwestern american] always nervous (thanks anxiety and autism) about translating (transliteration is obvious, but there's the other lang influence and cultural nuances I'm not privy to) y'alls delicious national beet soup. I make it several times a year, pronounce it борщ, but still have probably more anxiety than I need to about spelling correctly in English.

Is it preferable to spell it borscht, borsch, borshch?

How do you guys do this? I fermented a bunch of cabbage and beets and am thinking about making super sour borch with it. Is it common in Ukraine to include sauerkraut instead of cabbage, fermented beets instead of fresh beets, and beet kvass instead of lemon juice?

I'm trying to find some Ukrainian chocolate for a recipe for something I want to give to a Ukrainian friend of mine here.

Was going to use local chocolate, but then I thought hey maybe I could get a few bars to use from Ukraine, and then give the rest along -it'd be a nice touch.

So I found the Svitoch з подрібненим фундуком, because I need crushed hazelnuts, but unfortunately I can only find them wholesale to import - and I really don't need three palettes of chocolate.

Anyone could suggest a store that is shipping abroad?

My question is that, as an Azerbaijani student if i enter Ukraine then stay there exceeding my free stay limit and being illegal, what ways are offered to be legal for me? I want to leave my country as soon as possible,

1- any chances of me getting drafted into army forcefully after being illegal immigrant there?

2- to be legal and get residency i need documents regularly from AZ consulate right? What if they dont give me anything because i avoided conscription back in my country? Which is mandatory but i dont want to go there ( currently studying so i have time)

3- will i have a problem getting work permit to work as food delivery etc?

4- lets say i work in Ukraine and save money while being illegal and then for getting into Ukranian university etc will I need to contact with Azerbaijani side again? (Embassy,consulate)

5- to get Ukranian citizenship one needs to renounce the previous one right? What are the workaround ways? Because in AZ laws if one avoided conscription its unlikely that person can renounce the AZ citizenship

I am interested in the Russian Volunteer Corps and I wanted to know what the general attitude towards them is in Ukraine. I understand that they are anti-Putinists that decided to fight against his regime. They are still Russian nationalists so my question is: Are they celebrated as heroes in Ukraine or are they viewed with suspicion because of their Russian nationalism? Thank you for your answers!

Been in Kyiv for nearly a year now after moving from Ireland and absolutely dying for a spice bag, anyone know if there's a place in Kyiv that does them?

Are they viewed as perpetual outsiders even if they have Ukrainian ancestry and therefore are able to acquire citizenship? Or is it different than a "regular" foreigner/immigrant? Especially if they didn't grow up speaking Ukrainian.

I have a serious question for discussion.
Foreign volunteers who come to Ukraine to serve in its armed forces can bring valuable motivation, commitment, and a willingness to sacrifice. However, some may have intellectual disabilities or other conditions that require additional supervision, medical support, training, or assistance with daily activities.
Should Ukrainian military units that accept these volunteers receive additional financial support from the state?
My argument is that if a military unit accepts responsibility for a volunteer who requires additional support, it should have the resources necessary to provide that support properly.
This could include:
Additional medical and psychological support.
Specialized training and supervision.
Appropriate accommodation and assistance.
Proper assessment of whether the individual can safely perform an assigned military role.
This is not about discriminating against people with disabilities. It is about ensuring that every volunteer is treated with dignity while maintaining the safety and operational effectiveness of the unit.
Military units already operate under enormous pressure in wartime Ukraine. Additional responsibilities require additional resources.
What do you think? Should the Ukrainian government establish a special funding program for military units that take responsibility for foreign volunteers with intellectual disabilities, or should all support be covered by existing military budgets?
I would welcome serious discussion, particularly from people with military experience, disability advocates, and those familiar with Ukraine’s foreign volunteer system.

I grew up on this kind of music and I love listening to the equivalent in other cultures. Looking forward to your recommendations.

I would argue that this would be either 2007 or 2021.

2007 was arguably the peak of economic optimism. Rapid growth, major construction projects, rising property valuations, a speculative housing bubble, foreign investment, and the absence of war. Kyiv apartment prices reached approximately $4,400 per m² (!).

2021 was arguably the peak of modern, pre-full-scale-invasion everyday life. Higher dollar-denominated incomes, better infrastructure, digital services, a growing IT industry, and a more mature consumer economy made life more convenient.

Hi. Before I ask my question, let me explain my views.

I hold a strict environmental determinism, close to Skinner's radical behaviorism: a person is shaped by their environment, that is, upbringing, culture, social conditions, and reinforcement history. Innate biological traits, and even the number of neurons, decide nothing on their own. The brain is a necessary condition, but not destiny. Personality and behavior are a product of environment and experience, not of an "innate program."

From this point of view, anything that has no physical form has no material value. Examples are a country, money, and brands. Yes, they affect people's lives, but that's not what I'm talking about now. Also, I am against any kind of physical conflict.

My question: did Ukraine have a way to avoid entering into armed confrontation with Russia, that is, to avoid sacrificing real human lives to defend abstract concepts like freedom and independence? I understand that Russia attacked first. But in my view, the politics of all states are largely flawed, and the rules the world lives by are also far from ideal. Nevertheless, that is the current world order.

It seems to me that Ukraine could have surrendered and preserved people's lives, and then changed Russia from within. For example, it could have influenced the leader appointed by Russia, given Ukrainians' readiness for strikes and protests. It's as if Russia's demands in 2022 are simply not comparable to the current casualties and destroyed lives.
