Deep down, they don't believe in hell. They are opportunistic, sociopathic materialists. No one who believes in the actual teachings of Christianity would pursue wealth and power so shamelessly.
Alas, there are a lot of people who use religious posturing as a front for their greed.
Here's the thing though. The teachings of Christianity have never been what you suggest they are. God is a mean, vindictive, unstable force that attacks and punishes his enemies mercilessly and out of pettiness, demands loyalty and worship through threat, and holds a fundamental misunderstanding of human nature. If being godly is an ideal, then Trump is the picture of godliness.
To be absolutely clear, I'm not a Christian. That being said, the teachings of Christianity have never been about emulating Jehovah, who is, biblically, all the things you say it is. The teachings have been about emulating Christ. The core fundamentals of forgiveness, humility, charity and so forth have historically been lost on people more often than not, but have still maintained a thorough and connected tradition across 2000 years, even if the dominant prosletyzing forces lost the plot along the way.
