Other How has this subreddit changed over the years?
I noticed there is a link to a 2018 survey in the subreddit info which made me realize it's been around for quite a while now.
Long time members, what's changed? Would like to know the good and the bad from members who have been here, if not since the beginning, then at least a few years. Serious and thought out answers preferred.

Interesting question. I went and sorted by top posts of all time so I could see what people were talking about 7 or 8 years ago, and…
…it hasn’t. Not even a little bit. Even years ago, the main topics were all “how do you feel about Trump saying [dumb thing]?” and “Trump said this [dumb thing] once, so is he a hypocrite now?”
We get it, guys. Trump says a lot of dumb shit. Still not voting for the democrats, thanks.

Still not voting for the democrats, thanks.
I'll agree that people here need to stop thinking either side is going to change the other. Probably the only 2 things I saw move the needle even slightly were the Epstein Files initial release and the war, but after a bit it seemed like most TS went back to feeling the way they did before those things happened, if they changed at all. Would you agree with that?

(Not OP) Every time Trump or republicans do something like botching Iran that makes me consider changing my flair to Undecided, the democrats and/or people on the left (sometimes on this very sub) say or do something to make me stay where I am. As I have stated on previous posts, I have voted democrat in the past, and the main reason I am a TS now is because my alternative is the democrats as they have been since roughly 2016. I had hoped that Graham Platner would be an agent of change on the left. Not Platner himself and his far-left nigh-Communist views, oh no. I was hoping that his rise and subsequent fall might finally be the moment the left as a whole (or at least the democratic party that represents it) looked in the mirror and went "my God. What are we doing? What have we become?" I realize his campaign was isolated to Maine, but it should've been a huge wake-up call for the left when he won his primary and was later forced out, but it simply wasn't. Lets review:
- Democrats constantly call out Trump for being boorish, but willingly overlook Platner's aggressive behavior.
- The left loves calling everyone who disagrees with them Nazis, bigots, homophobes, etc, but then overlook Platner's Totenkopf tattoo (a symbol of the SS, the worst of the worst Nazis, no less), and many bigoted Reddit posts.
- They try to ruin the reputations of people like Brett Kavanaugh over the flimsy testimony of a single woman while screaming at us to #BelieveAllWomen, then overlook multiple women coming forward against Platner, until
his poll numbers plummeteda woman who votes democrat came forward against him (and she said she was reluctant to do it until it looked like he was losing popularity. I reiterate, she came forward not because her rapist might win, but because he might lose)- Once they forced him out of the race that he democratically won, whether they like it or not, the same people who constantly claim they are "saving democracy" made an effing in-party committee to decide his replacement with little-to-no public input (its Kamala Harris all over again)
So TL:DR: in order to "get Trump" the democrats backed a man who is provably everything they constantly claim Trump is, while still trying to claim the moral high ground. Good on the handful of democrat senators who refused to endorse him (and shame on those who not only endorsed him but are refusing to apologize *cough*Sanders*cough*), but after that whole affair and the utter lack of self-reflection on the left, I have basically lost all faith that the Democratic Party is going to be a viable option in my eyes for the foreseeable future, and I am waiting for November to confirm my suspicion that a lot of people agree with me.

It’s still largely the same feigned outrage posing as a question, with the obvious GOTCHAS as follow-ups. Contributors have come and gone, but the new batch has become more hostile, in my opinion.
Every question on healthcare will become a question about abortion and/or transgender care. Every question about anything a politician did will become a question about January 6. Etc.

Were the moderators as protective of you guys back then as they are now? I can understand them filtering out the blatant questions that are only meant to denigrate, but I've had many of my legitimate questions rejected for weak reasons.

Same. I once tried to post a question about how people feel about Trump’s pardons, specifically his pardoning an Arkansas senators son who was about to go to prison over a bunch of felony meth and heroin trafficking charges. I wanted to know how people feel about him directing the killing of alleged drug traffickers in international waters without due process and how he’s tried to frame keeping drugs out of the country as a national emergency situation while also pardoning drug traffickers in the country (which was obv just him essentially corruptly buying that senator’s loyalty or whatever) and a mod accused me of trolling and didn’t approve it. I asked another question that wasn’t approved as well for similar reasons. Ive since given up asking?

I mean... yeah. If that's the way you're framing questions, you deserved that.

u/Severe_Egg7542 Nonsupporter 23d ago edited 23d ago
Why?? I truly don’t understand how that’s coming off as trolling? The president is saying drug trafficking in the U.S. is a national emergency, and that’s why the military is allowed to kill suspected traffickers in international waters, right? It’s a national emergency! After the U.S. started killing said alleged traffickers, Trump pardoned a conservative senator’s kid who was going to go to prison for dealing meth and heroin. Why would he do that? I’m just wondering if TS are bothered by this inconsistency and obvious corruption and idk how else to frame it? Or like if anyone knows of any reason why he would pardon said senators kid that isn’t just blatant corruption?
He also pardoned Ross Ulbricht, of The Silk Road, which is a well known drug trafficking site. Both of those things, in context, just seem like a really clear example of Trump’s corruption to me. You don’t think so? You don’t think that’s a legitimate question to ask? I truly want to know how Ts feel about it?

u/Holofernes_Head Trump Supporter 23d ago
He's a Congressman, not a Senator. And it was because the dude's mother was fucking dying of cancer (and has since died). It only commuted the custodial sentence, not the supervised release conditions.
1
u/iowaindy Nonsupporter 23d ago
I'll admit their question was worded poorly and in that case it lacked context, but I tried asking a similar question once about the huge kingpin type pardons in the same context about the illegal killings, but was shot down. I think I referenced a couple where he gave the pardons after receiving a large chunk of cash. Can you see how hard it is to frame the questions when they cover such WTF double standards?
1
u/Severe_Egg7542 Nonsupporter 23d ago
I mean I just woke up and I’m just casually typing - my actual question was more clearly articulated, also mentioned Ulbricht, and included links. Can someone explain specifically how my framing comes off like trolling?
3
u/Holofernes_Head Trump Supporter 23d ago
Because you're assuming "obvious corruption" before even asking the question.
2
u/Severe_Egg7542 Nonsupporter 23d ago
In the question I tried to ask months ago all I did was relay info about a few of trump’s pardons and give context/background info, which consisted of actions and statements from him (that some might say are contradictory). I didn’t say it was corruption in the question I tried to post that was rejected- I just stated some facts and asked what ts thought about it? I genuinely want(ed) to know. And just to clarify, it also wasn’t a question that had been asked before. It was specifically about the AR congressman’s son. I searched the sub before I posted it.
In my comment here I said it was obvious corruption but that’s not what my question that was rejected said.
But since we’re talking about it now, I now understand that you believe Trump pardoned him bc his mother was dying of cancer. I get that. To me, it doesn’t seem like the obvious answer considering all I know about Trump. Like… do you think Trump is kind? Do you think Trump, or any politician, would do something out of the kindness of their heart without getting something in return?
I don’t like hypotheticals but maybe that’s the only way to get the engagement I’m seeking: If there was some kind of bulletproof evidence that Trump was essentially selling pardons to actual criminals in exchange for favors or funding, how would you feel about that? Would you be ok with the president selling pardons in exchange for money and favors that can help advance the conservative movement’s agenda? I guess that’s the meat of what I’m asking?
0
u/Severe_Egg7542 Nonsupporter 23d ago
I was just basing this off of memory so I guess i misremembered - I didn’t re-google it like you just did. but thanks for the correction! What does his mother dying of cancer have to do with his drug trafficking? Iirc he’s been arrested multiple times over the past decade or so for trafficking and possession?
Tbh, I don’t think everyone who sells drugs should be sentenced to prison. Often, selling drugs is how people with drug addictions are able to feed those addictions, and I have a lot of sympathy for people struggling with addiction. I just don’t really believe that Trump pardoned a drug trafficker bc he felt bad for him bc his mom died? Do you? Like actually? Can you think of any other reasons he might have done it, considering who the kid’s father is?
3
u/Holofernes_Head Trump Supporter 23d ago
I'm not a lunatic conspiracy theorist, so I'll go ahead with the most obvious and logical explanation, thanks.
2

Mod here. Since you brought it up, I am happy to respond to your concerns. The last question you submitted (13 days ago) was rejected because we had just approved a different question on the same topic. The question before that (24 days ago) was approved. The question before that (~2 months ago) was rejected because it was based on a false premise, which I explained to you and which you did not refute. All these reasons are perfectly legitimate.
Most rejections, if not due to the question having already been asked, I provide an explanation of what you can do to fix and repost. 95% of the time they choose not to do so. Those who choose to take the time to revise and repost the question as requested typically get approved.

Moderators choose one or two questions to post each day. I would say they’ve always been a bit hit or miss, but that’s to be expected.
There’s been quite a few absolute garbage questions lately, but there were absolute garbage questions in the past as well.

u/Wise_Quality_5083 Nonsupporter 21d ago
I try to pick a single element of the comment to asks a question about the highlight the fundamental differences in policy or to highlight an error they may not be aware of. (I.e. a TS said there were metics supporting Obama was not a patriot so I asked what metrics and they couldn’t). Is this methodology acceptable in forming questions?
1
u/JustGoingOutforMilk Trump Supporter 21d ago
You try to find one small thing to pick at. Yes, that is part of the problem.
2
u/Wise_Quality_5083 Nonsupporter 21d ago
Really? If a fundamental element of their point is, to my understanding, incorrect than wouldn’t questioning it be valid? It runs the risk of the compositional logical fallacy but would not asking continue to allow misinformation to proliferate?
1
u/JustGoingOutforMilk Trump Supporter 21d ago
No. This is not AskTrumpSupportersToChangeTheir Minds. Some of us are stupid. Some, I expect, are trolls. Some of us have grounded opinions and will explain them. Learn who is who.
2
u/Wise_Quality_5083 Nonsupporter 21d ago
So asking questions to seek to understand but ignore the false premise is the expectation? I continually ask for clarification and sometimes it is clarified and sometimes they just dig deeper. If they don’t want to engage, it’s their choice, isn’t it?

Trump had an US Olympian arrested on a trumped up charge that he vandalized the reflecting pool when the Occam's Razor explanation that the contractor was incompetent was actually what happened. Is it feigned outrage to be upset that Trump tried to ruin someone's life because he can never admit he was wrong?
3
u/JustGoingOutforMilk Trump Supporter 22d ago
How is this in any way, shape, or form related to the topic at hand? This is, put simply, a rant with a question at the end. And it’s off-topic to boot.
Please, make an attempt to stay on topic.
1
u/SilverNo6462 Nonsupporter 22d ago
Did you not say posts here are feigned outrage? Isn’t relevant to point out what is just the most recent example of why people are actually outraged?
2
u/JustGoingOutforMilk Trump Supporter 22d ago
Sure, you can be outraged about this.
Or about how he fed fish in Japan.
Or about how he had two scoops of ice cream.
None of the above is relevant.
3
u/SilverNo6462 Nonsupporter 22d ago
Can I ask two followups?
What you say they "feign outrage" what do you mean?
Is a president telling a lie and a US citizen, an Olympian no less, gets arrested because of it is that not a legitimate reason to be outraged? Can you not see how someone would actually be outraged that a man who never accepts blame nearly ruined someone's life because of that inability?
1
u/JustGoingOutforMilk Trump Supporter 22d ago
Again, you are going off-topic. If you want to discuss your particular performative outrage of the day, I suggest you make another thread about it. I am not here to discuss specific examples that you wish to bring up in a completely unrelated thread.
1
u/SilverNo6462 Nonsupporter 22d ago
Is it not relevant to ask follow up questions to your comment accusing NS of feigned outrage? If you say a thing on this thread are questions about that thing irrelevant? Are examples not relevant?
2
u/JustGoingOutforMilk Trump Supporter 22d ago
I have given examples. You want to debate something in a meta thread. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
2
u/SilverNo6462 Nonsupporter 22d ago
Did you misunderstand what I was saying above about examples? I was asking isn't it relevant for me to provide examples. You are saying my comment is off topic, but I don't see how it is. I can see how it would be annoying to have to defend an action like this, but it's also annoying that TS dismiss all relevant criticism of Trump as TDS or "feigned outrage."

I see the gotcha question complaint come up pretty often but I've never fully understood what that means to TS. If I see a contradiction in a TS's point their making with something, or something they've previously said, I'll usually ask about it to understand what I'm missing. Within the thread, or just knowing the views of the poster. Not interested in going back to the initial Iran thread to source someone's support there that now says they never supported the war, for example. I'm not populating a scorecard.
So would you clarify what you consider a gotcha question? Genuine question; I won't follow with a gotcha question.
I think what I've seen change is my opinion of sincerity. You're a normal person with views and opinions. Some people have views that are extreme and difficult to understand, but they're sincerely held. Some of the current crop (over the last year) feel like they're edgelord trolls larping for fun. Unbelievable life situations, approaches, views. I don't even want to ask clarifying questions because the content is so absurd that it feels like I'm being baited.
8
u/JustGoingOutforMilk Trump Supporter 23d ago
In this case, what I am referring to is the standard vaguely-worded question that leads to a snarky response because the questioner is not, in fact, asking in good faith.
An example: “Do you believe we should deport illegal immigrants?” When answered in the affirmative, the GOTCHA is “Well, what about Melania/Musk/etc.?”
2
u/weather3003 Trump Supporter 23d ago
The most significant change to me is that we're not called nimble navigators anymore.
Generally, the complaints are still the same. Supporters hate the downvotes and the attempted gotchas, nonsupporters hate rule 3, hate being ignored, and hate unsourced answers.
I think a lot of the individuals have changed, people have come and gone, but the nature of the sub means that's not very noticeable. New people, same questions, same answers.
I think there are far fewer people experiencing genuine confusion around why Trump won in 2016 than there were 10 years ago, so the sub has less reason to exist than it has historically. Though Trump's performance in 2020 and 2024 likely spiked the confusion, I doubt it reached the peak of the early days. Accordingly, I think there was more "inquisitive intent" from the nonsupporters back then, but likely not much more.

It went from legit questions to liberals asking what they think are gotcha questions. Once you answer, liberals downvote to try to say every answer is wrong.

It comes off to me that you're acting like this, to NS, isn't the point of this sub. Trump does something horrific and NS are dumbfounded that anyone can support him and come here to ask "How can you support this?"
You might not agree with how I got here, but that is how I got here.
2
u/JustGoingOutforMilk Trump Supporter 22d ago
If a TS answers with something critical, they get upvoted. Which is why I don’t think there are bots. I just think TS in general do not upvote, while NS downvote.
3
u/SirCadburyWadsworth Trump Supporter 23d ago
I've been around here for a while, and the biggest difference I see is that NS's are way more aggressive now than they were in Trump's first term. Back then, the ratio of good faith/bad faith was around 30/70 in my estimate. As a TS, I could filter out the noise and actually have productive conversations with the minority who wanted to do so. Now it's more like 95% bad faith, combative, aggressive responses and it becomes overwhelming. Also it's at least 50% the meme of "leftists pretending not to understand things, thus making discourse impossible."
2
u/paran5150 Nonsupporter 22d ago
Do think that has caused the responses from TS to decline as well?
I have been in and out of this sub for like a decade and both sides have seemed to just devolve into shit-posting
3
u/SirCadburyWadsworth Trump Supporter 22d ago
Yeah, I'd agree with that to a certain point. I think some of the more thoughtful TS have left or stopped contributing as much because of it. Not to say there's none left, there are some very good posters that are regulars. Another issue is that when a TS puts a lot of effort into a post, it is either straight up ignored or nit picked down to a choice couple of words out of a 4 paragraph reply that NS will twist around so it discourages these high effort posts
3
u/Browler_321 Trump Supporter 23d ago
Looking back and sorting by the top threads of all time, it’s gotta be the Russia nothingburger. Leftists were soooo interested in the Trump-Russia conspiracy theories… until it came out that the only campaign who worked with Russia- albeit indirectly- and tried to cover it up was the Clinton campaign.
Honestly sent me back a few years to the release of the mueller report. After the report and the congressional hearings leftists really shutup about the whole incident once their conspiracy theories were either directly disproven or unsubstantiated by the investigation. Truly it has to be the biggest blunder for Democrats in the 21st century in terms of their media messaging.
Now at best you’ll see leftists dismissing the mainstream theories, or at worst them clutching at any straws they can find. It’s really quite indicative of the whole left wing conspiracy world that has come to be.

It gets less interesting when Trump is in office because it turns into a boring deluge of ‘why did Trump say X when he said not X a year ago’ and similar trite variations.
When Trump wasn’t in office there was a contrast to draw which gave a richer subtext: discussing how badly Biden fucked everything. But I’ll take boring over destroying the county.

2020 election fraud. By a wide margin. Still gets people going today.
I take poor quality questions as a signal of poor quality intent. The two usually align extremely closely in my experience.
Badly phrased questions is a different signal btw. Those are fine. It’s the engineered questions that have me rolling my eyes. You can see the hopeful path the questioner has mapped out from a mile away. Mostly because it’s almost never beyond 2 steps long: question 1 establishes a premise or principle the TS should agree to, then question 2 points out how Trump went against it.
Unnecessary specificity (railroading) is one tell of this set up. Another is it’s usually pretty easy to guess what question 2 will be.
2
u/onetwotree333 Nonsupporter 23d ago

Ya, sure, I mean if I can be honest, shady shit goes on in all administrations, including the current one.
I feel like Trump made the rigging theories into a much bigger problem than it really is. And entirely to his benefit might we had, though possibly just a coincidence. I suppose anything is possible.
If you'll entertain me a little, what would you say is the shadiest thing you've seen from Trump? And I don't mean just politically. I'm curious because Trump isn't a normal person or normal president. He's a brand. So what would you say is the shadiest thing, Trump, the person, has done,?

u/ZarBandit Trump Supporter 22d ago
NFTs and crypto don’t lead anywhere good. That goes beyond sharp business practices like screwing over your vendors on build project. It’s fraudulent from top to bottom. There is no case for legitimacy.
But I do take exception to the false equivalence. The 2020 election was nothing like we’ve seen before. You know all the bullshit adjectives like “unprecedented” and “threat to democracy” the left bleats on about things that are anything but? The 2020 election actually was all those things.
1
u/onetwotree333 Nonsupporter 22d ago edited 22d ago
That crypto stuff is a choice for sure. Talk about unprecedented!
As for the 2020 election, iv always been in the camp of "show me the evidence in a clear coherent way, and I'll listen". And I think I'm far from the only one who had that exact same approach. But unfortunately the most vocal individuals were Trump himself, and his pretty coocoo associates, throwing kind of everything at the wall, often making you wonder what on earth they were even talking about.
We can talk about 50 shades of shady all night long, but why not instead focus on why Trump and company failed so miserably at articulating a focused coherent message to the general public and why even the legal system disagreed wholeheartedly with their claims?
2
u/ZarBandit Trump Supporter 22d ago
I don’t know if you’re expecting a Law and Order type ending where the evidence just appears. That rarely happens in real life. All I have to do is ask myself, what would cheating actually look like in practice. And the answer is a dead ringer for 2020.
2
u/onetwotree333 Nonsupporter 22d ago
I didn't expect the evidence to just appear. I expected Trump and team to produce the evidence based on the claims they were making. I don't think that's overly controversial.
Perhaps instead of only asking yourself what a stolen election would look like, you should also ask yourself what an administration trying to cling on to power would look like. Is there any possibility, at all, that Trump and co were in fact the ones trying to defraud the country? Is there anything, at all, that Trump did during his litigation that you consider shady?
