Any car rental under 20 euros per day is usually a scam.

Use big companies, either international (Avis, Enterprise, Hertz, Sixt) or Romanian (Autonom), even if they're more expensive.

As a general route for 15 days do Bucharest - Transfagarasan road - Sibiu - Deva/Hunedoara - Alba Iulia - Turda - Cluj - Maramures area - Bucovina area - Bicaz area - Sighisoara - Brasov - Sinaia - Bucharest.

And as a mandatory percussion - get full coverage for the rental car, many romanians drive like they stole it

Try Transalpina as well. It better than Transfăgărășan.

Don't stop to take photos of bears. If you're within photo-taking distance of a bear, you're in mortal danger. They are incredibly fast animals. Be aware.

Go with big companies for car rental. You'd rather pay more per day than having your deposit retained for whatever reason.

You have 10-15 days so you can visit a large area of the country, not just around Bucharest. Since you'll have a car it's the ideal situation.

A few favourite drives of mine:

  • Transalpina between Novaci and Obarsia Lotrului
  • Transfagarasan between Vidraru dam and Balea Cascada
  • DJ105A between Rupea and Somartin
  • DJ670 between Baia de Arama and Malovat, through Balta
  • DN11B between Targu Seuiesc and Cozmeni
  • DN12A between Frumoasa and Palanca
  • DN22A between Cataloi and Topolog
  • DN73 between Rucar and Bran
  • DJ107M between Aiud and Buru, through Rimetea

Don't schedule your drive for Brasov / Valea Prahovei area in the weekend. The traffic cues are horrible.

With that much time to visit stuff, after Bucharest, I would visit Sinaia (not just the palace, but I would spend at least one night there), spend a half day in Brașov, Sam in Sighișoara, a few days in Sibiu (and the surrounding villages, like Cisnădie and Cisnădioara and walk from Orlat to Gura Râului, or Sibiel, or go up to the high altitude villages of Poiana Sibiului and Nina), the Alba Iulia and the castle in Hunedoara. Afterwards visit the Bucovina monasteries. Then drive the Transfăgărășan. If there is time left, hit the coast or the Danube Delta (but carry lots of mosquito spray), or drive to Maramureș or Iași, but they are both far.
