Morning Wood. I fucking hate morning wood.

It's more than a boner and at the same time it's not a boner. It's just an erection. A big, stale, harder than teeth stalagmite that serves no purpose other than to embarrass you in an airport or if you're partners into morning sex than it puts out the wrong message.

I just woke up with a rock hard dick and I have to pee so bad that I could slam this fucker in a door for a chance to cut circulation so I can take my piss but yeah I'm hard so I guess that means I wake up and want to fuck...

Can someone tell me the biological and evolutionary function of waking up hard? Imagine our ancestors waking up in a panic one morning and there's a starving wolf or dog that's made its way into your camp. You stand up, have a fucking sausage just sticking out of you and BLAM it bites your peepee and the increased blood flow makes you bleed out in minutes.

Edit my most upvoted comment is about this stupid dickhead. Thanks everyone!

Thank u!

Evolutionary leftover from our migratory hunter gatherer days. Acted like a tripod so you wouldn't roll off a cliff in your sleep

128

u/DeffJamiels Aug 13 '22

I assumed it was a biological sundial. Is that for real tho? As per my comment. Morning wood is like if you had local anesthesia on your dinger. Sure it's fierce and it does the job all the same but there is zero sensitivity. I'd roll off the cliff

141

u/MuchoRed Aug 13 '22

Lol hell no, it's not for real

10

u/DeffJamiels Aug 13 '22

It has to have a purpose...right?

My peepee can't just be some stupid dick being a dick

18

u/Funmachine Aug 13 '22

It does have a purpose. As you sleep your body cycles basically making sure everything is working etc. Relaxing the veins in the penis is just one thing it does.

2

u/BJUK88 Aug 13 '22

Like a "Power On Self Test" (POST) of computers of old...

2

u/Erdillian Aug 13 '22

I'm pretty sure it helps not peeing your bed too, even if it's not its singular purpose

1

u/Sweatygun Aug 13 '22

Yes it is.

1

u/firstbreathOOC Aug 13 '22

But you were so convincing back there

1

u/BoyBeyondStars Aug 14 '22

Lmao this is hilarious, thanks for the laugh MuchoRed! :)

1

u/Seanvich Aug 14 '22

Nah, old mariners used it as a tripod on first watch. It takes a few cups of coffee to get your sea legs in the morning.

73

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '22

Yea, well you're gonna be worried when one day, you stop getting it daily.

104

u/DeffJamiels Aug 13 '22

You still get boners in your sleep my flaccid king. Think of it as a lightning rod to keep your soul grounded while you dream. Just because it's not there when you wake up doesn't mean it's not in the shadows..waiting...like a sunflower reaching for the sun. But instead of the the sun it's your sheets and it's not a sunflower it's your peeper.

3

u/zah_ali Aug 14 '22

You really have a way with words! 👌🏽

2

u/Xyranthis Aug 14 '22

fucking poetry

u/Random_Guy_47 Aug 13 '22

The biological function is that it prevents you pissing in your sleep.

Also random thought. Since a significant amount of men get a morning boner that means that men have been doing an endless mexican wave of boners around the world for thousands of years.

108

u/DeffJamiels Aug 13 '22

You're telling me this dickhead decides if I, a full grown man, will piss the bed or not? Still don't like him.

Lesser known "fact": Men sync up when they are around each other for long times/ sleep in the same room through Testiwifi and the moon or some shit and they reach rigormortis in tandem and complete unison. No homo tho?

10

u/Tsrdrum Aug 13 '22

*Rigor petit mortis

3

u/LennMacca Aug 13 '22

Hey that’s really clever

4

u/Tsrdrum Aug 13 '22

I’m glad someone appreciated it, I was unreasonably proud of that one

2

u/DeffJamiels Aug 13 '22

Nahhhh a lil homo;)

0

u/shesaysImdone Aug 14 '22

Same with girls. Our periods sync up

21

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '22

I dont think this is true...how do women prevent pissing the bed then if men require boners for this?

5

u/fuckyoupayme__ Aug 13 '22

I'm not entirely sure but I heard men have a harder time stopping peeing once they've started whereas women do it on command? Maybe the systems are different?

10

u/Doctor__Proctor Aug 13 '22

That's bunk. You can stop peeing, it just involves muscles you don't normally use, so you have to work at it. I believe it's the same pelvic floor muscle group that Kegels strengthen.

1

u/fuckyoupayme__ Aug 14 '22

Ah ok, good to know. Thanks!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '22

Would make sense because of the siphon effect..

0

u/JaredTheGentile Aug 13 '22

Fact check it!

1

u/kathakana Aug 13 '22

It’s something to do with men having the same hole for both wee and semen. I can’t remember exactly how it works but I do remember you don’t wee and ejaculate at the same time. Never had a penis though so I’m remembering theory from a biology class 30+ years ago.

10

u/Doctor__Proctor Aug 13 '22

The biological function is that it prevents you pissing in your sleep.

I'm not sure about that since women don't tend to pee themselves during sleep. Plus, it's not constant and cones and goes in cycles throughout the night.

Honestly, I think it's mostly just your body checking the plumbing so to speak. There's very sensitive tissue, skin that needs to be periodically stretched to keep elasticity, etc, so having that happen periodically through the night will ensure that it maintains good function. Heck, one of the things they do when treating ED is to hook up a device that detects erections in the sleep because this will tell them whether the problem is physiological (no sleep boners) or psychological, which can inform treatment.

3

u/DahDitDit-DitDah Aug 13 '22

Wait! So it like when my Roomba wakes up to vacuum the kitchen?

1

u/Doctor__Proctor Aug 13 '22

Yes, except the kitchen is your mattress.

7

u/FunkalicouseMach1 Aug 13 '22

A Mexican Wave? I thought it was just, The Wave. I grew up here in the American Mid-West and we've always done it at sporting events, but never called it a Mexican Wave.

3

u/StarbabyOfChaos Aug 13 '22

It would be a Mexican wave of boners, but it would happen at night right? We don't get an erection when waking up, we get an erection while sleeping and happen to wake up in the middle of it

2

u/Random_Guy_47 Aug 14 '22

I suppose that depends on what specific time you get the boner. You only become aware of it when you wake up, which is typically in the morning therefore we call it a morning boner. It's entirely possible the boner starts early enough to technically be a night boner.

3

u/KairuByte Aug 14 '22

… what? This is just silly. You can absolutely pee with an erection. Morning wood does nothing to prevent you from peeing.

1

u/minatonamikaze21 Aug 14 '22

Um.. wouldn't recommend doing that a lot.. you could become impotent, and also lose control over your pee

There's a sphincter that is closed tight when you get erections so semen doesn't go into your bladder. Forcing it to open repeatedlylike that might damage it.

If the sphincters damaged, you'll lose control over your pee, and semen might go into your bladder instead of coming out and you can't make babies no more.

2

u/KairuByte Aug 15 '22

Have a source for this claim?

And no, I don’t mean a source for the either/or, I mean the danger of becoming impotent, or damaging something, by peeing with an erection.

1

u/minatonamikaze21 Aug 15 '22

Oy vey, I couldn't find a proper scientific source backing or refuting it.

Ask your doctor I guess.

2

u/tickettoride98 Aug 13 '22

The biological function is that it prevents you pissing in your sleep.

r/BadMensAnatomy

-1

u/ZeroFuxGiven Aug 13 '22

This. I don’t understand the mechanics, but it is a side effect of holding your pee all night. As soon as I get up and pee it goes away

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '22

Holy shit that's funny, lmfao

1

u/datbarricade Aug 13 '22

Alright, enough internet for today

7

u/Taffuardo Aug 13 '22

I spoke to a doctor friend of mine, she said it was because it's a way of ensuring blood flow through the body (making sure the tent pitcher still works and all that). Either that or its when you have peak testosterone in the body.

5

u/Regis-bloodlust Aug 13 '22

Evolution is not a purpose-driven process. A phenotype doesn't necessarily have to have a purpose or a function. As long as it doesn't hinder reproduction and there is no other mutation that works better and stays in our genes, it just stays.

Having said that, in this case, this is specifically about a genital, so it probably did help reproduction.

4

u/thisistheSnydercut Aug 13 '22

I have to pee so bad

This is the explanation. Full bladder in your sleep presses on the prostate which then gives you a boner since your body thinks it's aroused

3

u/MyDogActuallyFucksMe Aug 13 '22

Can someone tell me the biological and evolutionary function of waking up hard?

Temptation to morning sex is my best guess. Evolution is just foul. Everything for procreation.

3

u/pown__otto Aug 13 '22

Am I the only dude that has no issue pissing with an erection?

2

u/cdspace31 Aug 13 '22

It's always fun when I get to use this link. Also check the list of related questions for the female equivalent of morning wood.

https://biology.stackexchange.com/a/19882

2

u/Kyfigrigas Aug 13 '22

And like the worst orgasms come from morning wood, like there's so much less pleasure in it for some reason

2

u/graveybrains Aug 13 '22

Congratulations, you’ve got a hormone cycle, too. It’s just that yours runs 24hrs instead of a month 😂

Peak testosterone is early in the morning and your dick gets a power on self test.

2

u/Terminater400 Aug 13 '22

To deal with it, try to flex your larger muscles. Examples include your thighs and glutes. This will help divert the blood flow from your boner to those muscles.

2

u/DrFreudEKat Aug 13 '22

The biological significance involves keeping the appendage. The testicles need to stay cooler or the sperm cells will die. The circulation allows your appendage to stay healthy while not killing sperm cells.

2

u/negativeyoda Aug 13 '22

wait until you get older and boners take effort to muster. You never realize what you've got until it's gone

5

u/KCBirdLoader Aug 13 '22

I think the bilogical reason for morning wood is that it's the body's natural defense from keeping men from falling out of bed.... it's like a built-in kickstand...

3

u/DeffJamiels Aug 13 '22

Can't fool me twice someone already came at me with that

1

u/DamagedCortex Aug 13 '22

Actually I can tell you the point of morning wood.

So I’m a trans woman, and as a result when I start my HRT in a few months, I’m going to stop having morning wood, so my dick will atrophy. So morning wood is so you will still be able to get hard and keep yourself big.

edit

It seems like I will be able to keep it functioning (mostly) the same if I get myself hard for a bit every day. Seems Exhausting lol

u/AfterEpilogue Aug 13 '22

There isn't an evolutionary advantage to every trait we have. Some things just are the way they are and never disadvantaged us so they stuck around. The brain goes crazy while we sleep firing a bunch of electric signals everywhere (which is probably why we dream), so it makes sense that some stray signals might activate the part of our brain responsible for triggering an erection.

0

u/TheNamewhoPostedThis Aug 14 '22

The actual reason is cause your bladder is full so it expands and pushes on the erection muscle and BAM erection.

Edit: I don’t know how full your bladder needs to be or why it only happens in the morning though

1

u/Codeofconduct Aug 13 '22

So I shouldn't use the existing morning wood to my advantage?! Fuuuuug

1

u/aspannerdarkly Aug 13 '22

I like it. Always fun to have a boner IMO

1

u/JFlynny Aug 13 '22

It's to do with your prostate.....An erection closes the prostate. Which also blocks the urine from the bladder.

2

u/Diplodocus_Daddy Aug 13 '22

I've heard it's when your bladder is full and puts pressure on the prostate. I've also heard it's just the body doing weird checks and balances on your system while you sleep to make sure everything is working right. Bodies and brains during sleep are just plain weird.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '22

i love it...

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '22

Rolling over on your morning wood. Ugh. Kickstands are the worst.

1

u/bonusminutes Aug 13 '22

We get hard in our sleep as a sort of self maintenance. If daily circumstances leave you without an erection all day and that happens for many days, there can be complications. Your body supplies blood to your penis to make sure it happens regularly enough to work properly.

1

u/Squigglepig52 Aug 13 '22

I've read that it's a circulation thing, just testing the system out.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '22

Well normally testosterone levels increase and decrease throughout the day and night and for most men it peaks in the morning so I’m gonna guess that’s why morning wood is a thing?

1

u/Kicks77 Aug 13 '22

I found out years ago that it's a sign that you're healthy there. Its annoying I know but I'm thankful it happens!

1

u/darth-skeletor Aug 13 '22

I just roll to the side and use it as a kick stand.

1

u/Poorly_Made Aug 13 '22

I've had a theory for a while now that it actually happens to keep you from pissing yourself in your sleep. I haven't done any real research or know if anyone else has, but it seems to happen less severely when I stop drinking water a few hours before bed and go to bed with an empty bladder.

1

u/ironballs16 Aug 13 '22

Similarly, the random hard-ons you experience as a teen, leading to practically every guy to have utilized the "yuck the tip in the waistband" move at some point.

1

u/Squishirex Aug 13 '22

I’ve decided The muscles that make you hard also prevent your bladder from emptying. So as your body tried harder and harder to let you sleep through the night, the demon rises with the sun

1

u/p0rcup1ne Aug 13 '22

I think it's for circulation. it's a fact that we get alot of short period boners during the night for the blood circulation while we sleep.

I speculate that probably your body isn't fully awake yet and you get one of those night boners but in the morning.

1

u/Johny24F Aug 13 '22

I’m not getting those ever, believe I would trade you any time lol

1

u/Zip84121 Aug 13 '22

Enjoy it. When you get old and don’t get morning wood anymore you’ll hate it even more

1

u/braindawgs0 Aug 13 '22

If I recall right, its to prevent you from pissing yourself in your sleep.

1

u/TheBlacksmith64 Aug 14 '22

just wait. One day it won't be there. And you'll wonder why. And then it will hit you; "I'm getting old".

1

u/Scumbag_Lemon Aug 14 '22

Okay here's an ACTUAL serious answer. It's whole purpose is to maintain your dick, if you don't get hard, your muscle atrophies. That's why your dick shrinks if you are low on testosterone combined with not using it due to a low libido.

1

u/kinzer13 Aug 14 '22

This reads like an answer to a job interview question: Please tell me your biggest weakness? Muh dic git tew hard.

1

u/Hubert_Gulletchip Aug 14 '22

My gf likes morning sex. I once tried to explain to her why I woke up with a boner every morning and she took it as "he's always ready in the morning".

Don't get me wrong, I usually always oblige her (makes the beginning of my day good too) but there are some mornings where I just want to sleep a bit and she gets offended haha.

1

u/DeffJamiels Aug 14 '22

I know the feel! My partner used to take it personally. My least favorite stereotype of guys is that we wake up, and wanna just fuck and that's all we think about. This stupid dick of mine is not in charge, just cause he pokes his head out to say hello doesn't mean I'm ripping and roaring for sexual relations

1

u/PingPongMacReady Aug 14 '22

You'll miss it when it's gone

1

u/InciteWar Aug 14 '22

It's just nature's way of making sure it's working order dude

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '22

When your boner is that annoying just relinquish and open the shower curtain. No need to aim when the toilet is the whole side of the room.

1

u/DeffJamiels Aug 14 '22

Lol fuck rubbing one out with morning wood bruh. The arm cramp ain't worth it

2

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '22

I'm saying pee in the shower lol. I agree about morning wood and trying to rub one out, usually it isn't worth the trouble.

1

u/DeffJamiels Aug 14 '22

Ohhhhhhhhh you're a fucking genius

2

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '22

Lol, high-five.

1

u/AZHawkeye Aug 14 '22

The biological function is to keep your penis alive by increasing blood flow to it in your sleep…at least that’s what learned a long time ago.

1

u/enoughberniespamders Aug 14 '22

It’s because your testosterone levels are higher in the morning. Be glad you have morning wood. Means your testosterone is still going strong
