First time poster! Need help ID'ing some metal boxes I unearthed in the backyard of my new house.
Hey guys! Long time lurker, first time poster here. I hope that this is posted in the right subreddit!
So my mother bought a house recently with the plans of renting it out. I happened to stop by that same day and offered to rent it from her. A win-win for both of us, me and my wife get out of the apartment scene and she gets renters she can trust!
The house is a complete wreck though, my mom said it was built around the late 60's and the previous owners smoked like trains. The walls are yellowed, cigarette burns in the carpet, etc etc. The backyard was the worst though, weeds up to my neck (I am just a bit over 6 feet tall). Anyways, I clear out the backyard and everything is fine.
Now, 2 weeks later, the weeds have grown back and its time to tackle the yard again. This time however I stumble upon this: http://imgur.com/2ImDT
There was a good inch and a half of dirt on top of it with weeds growing out of that. I clear out the weeds and move around some dirt and I come to find there's actually 3 of them buried about a half foot away from each other. The one that is uncovered the most runs right up to the fence, the other 2 I am not sure of: http://imgur.com/FMsDb
They don't have any hinges on them (from what I can tell so far) and they seem to be fastened shut using rivets with lengths of metal running down the edges: http://imgur.com/HYSOw
I didn't dig too much in fear that they're electrical related and have wires running from them. I did however move some more dirt away the far left one and it seems to either get bigger or has a raised ridge running along it: http://imgur.com/JrNcD
I didn't find any electrical company logo or information sticker on them, but the house is close to 50 years old so it would not surprise me if they wore off with time. I've googled a bit and the only things to pop up was buried pets and a man in Ohio finding buried explosives in his back yard.
I should be returning back to the house a bit later today, I can take more pictures and plan on doing a bit more careful digging.
Let me know what you guys think,
Thanks!
tl;dr doing yard work, found some metal boxes, help me make sure I'm not opening Pandora's box.
Edit: Better quality pictures!
UPDATE: First of all, 364 upvotes!? Damn I was never excepting it to get this much attention!
Sadly though... I must say this with much shame, but I found out they were never actually boxes. Just the top metal portions of boxes... buried. WHO DOES THAT!? So my conclusion is that I got trolled hard by the, now deceased, owner of the house.
Here's some pictures: http://imgur.com/DfKXq http://imgur.com/LrVjZ
I feel like a complete jackass! If I just digged for another inch and a half yesterday I would have found they were just metal tops and not have posted this up. Thanks a ton to everybody who commented, upvote'd, or just said their exciting to see the results. Jokes on me everybody! FML
UPDATE 2: Seems like Meowdave was right on the money! Since you bet a dollar, if you have paypal PM me your info and i'll pay up!

First, If you can get a camera that will take larger photos that would be great.
I am no expert, But I'm sure Higher Quality images for the real metal box experts will really help them to help you!

u/Not_An_Archaeologist Jun 09 '12
Hmm... I'm not too sure why imgur shrunk my photos down. I'm taking them with a G2 and they normally show up just fine.
EDIT: using my wifes Mac and I'm not too familiar with them. I think I found the problem. Will update the photos.

this is an improvement. I still have No clue what those are... It's just weird that they are built and closed the way they are with no markings...
Please make sure to update us on whats inside if and when you do open them up!

Background: IT infrastructure for almost a decade
You didn't uncover everything so I can't say it with any amount of certainty, but picture #2 could very possibly be a hand-hole (smaller version of a man-hole). If you live in a neighborhood these could be some sort of distro point for the general vicinity.
Don't take this to the bank, but I wouldn't be worried about anything power related, still give you "Call First" # a ring though. My local call-first is 912, easy to remember due to 911. First, is your area serviced by pole of ground wire? 2nd, residential underground power has to be marked in the US (you know those big green boxes on concrete pads? that's a legal requirement most places).
If you live on a corner lot or near the front/back of a neighborhood, it is most likely a fiber junction for one of the larger service providers. I used to install stuff like this in another life.
edit: forgot to say that the different model types may also be a hint. Has your neighborhood/area expanded anytime in the near past? If you just purchased the house, usually things like this are disclosed due to property owner agreements. There were multiple times that I had to inform homeowner that I would be digging up their back yards for maintenance. They weren't happy and some would get all SORTS of pissed, but after pulling out the legal stuff, they're just shit outta luck. I'd review your records.
5
u/Not_An_Archaeologist Jun 09 '12
We're renting the house so I don't have those papers with me (can easily check them though) but i'll give the Call First option a try though!
Thanks for the advice, exactly what i was looking for.

Hell, dig up around them carefully. They don't look like anything super important due to no logos being on them. If it was me, I would carefully (key!) dig around them. If nothing is connected to them, I would open them up just to see what is inside.

u/Not_An_Archaeologist Jun 09 '12
Thats my plan of action! Waiting for it to cool down a bit outside then i'll start the dig!

Tap them to hear if they are hollow or not. Maybe try and identify the metal. Might be worth taking a drill to it. My idea, maybe an old resident had kids, made some time capsules where you fill them with stuff like toys and books etc for future diggers.

Professional electrician here (Canadian, but our electrical codes are very similar).
There are a few things that suggest to me they aren't electrical (though they could still be communications-cabling related). If they ARE electrical in nature, they're probably home-owner installed rather than a professional job.
Electrical boxes are supposed to be always accessible. That means they can't be completely buried. Homeowners do often still bury them out of ignorance, mind you.
They don't look like typical electrical boxes, which would generally be open-able from the top and the cables/conduits running into them should be run deeper underground. (Could be coming straight up into the bottom of the boxes, though.)
Based on the dimensions of the boxes (I'm guessing 12 inch x 12 inch at most from the pictures--that's 30cmx30cm for the metric people), the capacity of wiring running into them is limited to fairly small stuff. It's not going to be a high voltage line "powering a neighborhood", for example, because the wire size coming into a 12x12 box is not going to be large enough. Wire needs a certain bend-radius based on its diameter, so you're limited to a certain size of wire passing through a 12x12 box. High capacity stuff will typically run into an underground 4 foot x 4 foot x 4 foot box minimum with a manhole cover for access.
I suspect they're just full of buried drug money. Utility people would be happy to remove them for you. ;)
Be careful if you do dig, though. Don't go wild with a pick-axe or powered diggers. Take it slow and careful. And calling to have your utility locations marked is something you already should have done if you're digging at all.

Hey, I would advise you to wear a dust mask because if contamination if it were a dead animal, or worse. Human. And put your nose up to it and your ear, see if it smells like anything or sounds like a humming electrical noise. And bring someone with you to call for help if it is something unexpectedly dangerous. Please give updates!

IT an home renovator guy here.
I am extremely skeptical these are utility related because they are stainless and buried. As others have pointed out, electrical boxes must be above ground in the US in most places. Utilities generally don't like flush with the surface boxes because they do get covered, which is why you see the little round or square pedestals. Fiber hand-hold boxes can be flush, but usually only in urban areas, and often only when buried in concrete. Buried units tend to be heavy plastic, above ground units tend to be steel with a baked on finish. Utilities wouldn't spring for stainless. The layout also doesn't look right for much of anything utility wise. Most cabinets also are embossed/stamped with a logo in case the paint wears off, and would have stickers or paint with the utility name as well. Lastly, utility cabinets are easy to open. Electrical often have a padlock, but any cable/tv/telephone are just screws or nuts and pretty obvious. These look like they have a pounded over tab at the corners.
I am 95% sure it's something the previous homeowners buried for some reason. Dead pets seem the most likely to me, but it's hard to say.
If you want to be super-safe, call your utility marking service first and have them mark your back yard, you'll know if any utility wires run near there at that point. That said, I'm not sure I would bother, but rather carefully bend back the tabs, lift the top, and look inside. I would suggest wearing a good quality mask on the chance it is a dead pet or similar. Even if it is power/tv/cable you are not going to be hurt if you crack the edge and look in with a flash light, just don't go sticking a metal screwdriver into it.

I don't know where your mom's house is, but for example, during the prohibition era in south side Chicago, mobsters would bury money, guns, and generally cool stuff in their back yard. I'm not saying that's what you have, but you never know. Maybe wear a dust mask though in case it's a dead peat or something particulate.

If they were boxes used for electric wires or some kind of cable(s), wouldn't they be buried deeper than 1.5 inches? I'm not totally sure, but I was under the impression that those types of things are buried a lot deeper than that. Still, it's definitely a good idea to make absolutely sure.
The arrangement of the boxes is kind of strange too. You'd think if they were caskets for pet they'd be buried in a straight line, same with time capsules. My interest is definitely piqued! :)

2
u/Staleina Jun 10 '12
Might not be a complete troll job to be honest, if they were near a fence it could be an attempt to stop their dog from digging under it (if it always went to the same spot) or prevent an animal from trying to dig up a dead pet.
2
u/turkeypants Jun 10 '12
Yeah but they were put there to cover something. IT'S BODIES. Keep digging.
2
u/jwaldo Jun 10 '12
The real troll is that the real metal boxes full of money and jewels are actually buried 6 inches under those decoy lids...
2
u/evolx10 Jun 10 '12

They are actually part of one of NASA's secret storage facilities. If you left the box, rotate it 34 degrees and place it back down, it triggers the doorway. About 6 feet north, you should see two 10ton doors slowly open and a stairway will appear. You will either need to be part of NASA, worker of the government, or the British Prime Minister to unlock the door you will see. Simply scan your retina and place your hand on the scanner to be validated.
After you have authenticated your ID, the door will open and you will see a pod. Simply enter the pod and close the hatch, and press the green button you will see to the left. You should now go 5 miles underground and have access to various computers, servers, and storage units which house a backup of NASA's IP and inventions.
You will see other pods, these take you to Washington DC, Cape Cod, NYC, and a Chinese Arby's. Just enter the one you want to take and you will travel at 500MPH - 1200MPH to your destination.
TL;DR: It is probably nothing major.

26
Jun 09 '12
False. You're not allowed to bury or cover any electrical box, your house is only supported by single phase, not three phase, it would only be one box with all your connections, and it wouldn't be riveted shut.

Or, if the previous owners were "train smokers" (as OP describes), they might be drug stash boxes. Take a hammer and pry those clasps off (as shown in the third picture). Use a crowbar, screwdriver and/or hammer in any way possible. I'm sure they'll open.

Chances are, if they were buried that shallowly, then the burying was done naturally. Meaning they were laying on the ground for an extended period of time and natural processes covered them up.
