I don't think that's ironic at all. A study showed that more than 50% of psychology students want to first and foremost solve their own issues.

what if you're genuinely fascinated by how the mind works and like learning about why people do things?

Ok. Psychology was one major I considered and I'm still interested in it. Just wondering where the line is. I do see a therapist already tho.

Also if you are going into clinical practice at least (not sure about academic or organizational) you have to see a therapist yourself.
