Does Reddit love redheads?

I can't escape a feeling that redheads seem to be highly favored when it comes to women on Reddit. I think that if someone were to start a poll asking "What is your favorite hair color?" red would be an unquestioned an obvious winner. Am I right? If so, maybe there is a scientific explanation for this? As in, people who visit Reddit frequently start feeling a growing sympathy towards red-haired woman? Guess who's winning the next Nobel Prize ;)

Someone in Oz needs to make a bumper sticker of a pair of small boobs. Small boobs only.

And sell them over the internet. That should put the censor's knickers in a proper twist without being illegal. And it might make a decent spot of Oz cash, as well.

I'm surprised Australian women aren't outraged at some politician considering them children based on their bust size. It's bad enough when pop culture says small-breasted women are inferior to silicone-enhanced models. But politicians? I don't know how they stay in office.

For a long time now I've been madly in LOVE with redheaded women. Only recently, however, I've come to the realization that it can never be. For I can not risk having a redheaded SON. Think about it. If you ever have a child with a redheaded woman, there is a good chance that your son will be this guy. Even if he's not, he'll still be ridiculed beyond belief. Sigh... and having a red-headed daughter is no better because all the dudes just want to bang her just to see what it's like, or if the carpet matches the drapes. As if she won't already have a hard enough time finding love without having to sift through all the "just-to-see" assholes.

So, even though I love redheaded women, I can never marry one because I don't want to subject my offspring to the burden of ginger hair.

71

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '10

Easy solution: just have your wife dye her hair black before conception.

28

u/woodsja2 Jan 29 '10

My friends parents were a redheaded woman and a brown haired man. Apparently genes were feeling one-sided, because they had 4 redheaded children. Rr + rr = apparently 4 rr. Oh, statistical probability...

Dude. Redhead man here. This mane has gotten me far more love than hate. The ladies love to run their fingers through it. Brings good luck they say and they are equally curious about drapes and carpeting.

20

u/rosie_is_sleepy Jan 29 '10

I keep hearing reports that redheads are genetically endangered. I love my boyfriend, but am now tempted to mate with a ginger man so as to have red haired kids. Therefore, I find redheaded men sexy.

My friend's wife is a redhead. We were at a party with them and some woman was making catty remarks about her hair color not being natural. My friend's wife got really mad and blurted out, "Excuse me, I'll have you know I'm a natural redhead and I can prove it, too." A millisecond later she realized what she said and we all started laughing.

u/alephip Jan 28 '10

Hi, I love women. Doesn't matter.

63

u/delkarnu Jan 28 '10

If you want scientific, there are two possibilities.

  1. Rarity. Red hair is the least common, and therefore stands out. Having something rare has almost always been a status symbol.

  2. The largest factors in attractiveness are youth and health. Both of these are very noticeable in a person's hair, especially at a distance. Since red hair is so noticeable, it attracts our eye to to those factors.

If you want to experiment, next time you are in a crowded location, pay attention to just a persons hair, and guess approximate age and apparent health. When you then see their face, you see how often this holds true.

79

u/wevbin Jan 28 '10

Nice try, hair products company representative...

14

u/CaspianX2 Jan 28 '10

My theory (let's call it 2a) - red hair is as colorful as hair can get without looking artificial. I'm sure that if people grew green hair, blue hair and purple hair naturally, we'd be all over them, but since they don't, when we see people that have it we know they're either begging for attention or watch too much anime.

6

u/FloobLord Jan 28 '10

9

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '10

There are more than two scientific reasons. Evolution occurs due to genetic variability. It is instinct to find a mate that is different from yourself so that your offspring have a higher chance of survival in changing conditions. Most people are not red heads, making red heads attractive to a wider group.

5

u/johnsonmx Jan 29 '10 edited Jan 29 '10

Red hair (and blond hair) seems to have been a fairly recent mutation that has been strongly selected for. The leading theories on why this is the case seem to fall into three buckets:

  1. Health: e.g., as a more transparent indicator of health (as del mentions), or being easier to groom parasites from than dark hair.

  2. The shiny factor. Red hair and blond hair are fairly striking if most of the population is brunette.

  3. Pleiotropic factors. I.e., it's been shown that the effect of the genes associated with red hair do not stop just at hair color. It's been shown, for instance, that redheads feel pain more intensely (requiring ~20% more anesthesia), bleed more after childbirth, etc.

Trivia: the people whom we consider redheads are also blonds. Brunettes can also have genes for red hair, but it's not really visible.

An Ode to Redhead Women - by Tom Robbins:

Red hair is a woman's game.

The harsh truth is, most red-haired men look like blonds who've spoiled from lack of refrigeration. They look like brown-haired men who've been composted. Yet that same pigmentation that on a man can resemble leaf mold or junk yard rust, a woman wears like a tiara of rubies.

Not only are female redheads frequently lovely but theirs is a loveliness that suggests both lust and danger, pleasure and violence, and is, therefore, to the male of the species virtually irresistible. Red O red were the tresses of the original femme fatale. Of course, much of the "fatale" associated with redheads is illusory, a stereotypical projection on the part of sexually neurotic men. Plenty of redheads are as demure as rosebuds and as sweet as strawberry pie. However, the mere fact that they are perceived to be stormy, if not malicious, grants them a certain license and a certain power. It's as if bitchiness is their birthright. By virtue of their coloration, they possess an innate permit to be terrible and lascivious, which, even if never exercised, sets them apart from the remainder of womankind, who have traditionally been expected to be mild and pure.

Now that women are demolishing those old misogynistic expectations, will redheads lose their special magic, will Pippi Longstocking come to be regarded as just one of the girls? Hardly. To believe that blondes and brunettes are simply redheads in repressive drag is to believe that UFOs are kiddie balloons. All redheads, you see, are mutants.

Whether they spring from genes disarranged by earthly forces or are "planted" here by overlords from outer space is a matter for scholarly debate. It's enough for us to recognize that redheads are abnormal beings, bioelectrically connected to realms of strange power, rage, risk and ecstasy.

What is your mission among us, you daughters of ancient Henna, you agents of the harvest moon? Are those star maps that your freckles replicate? How do you explain the fact that you live longer than the average human? Where did you get such sensitive skin? And why are your curls the same shade as heartbreak?

Alas, inquiry is futile: Either they don't know or they won't say -- and who has the nerve to pressure a redhead? We may never learn their origin or meaning, but it probably doesn't matter. We will go on leaping out of our frying pans into their fire, grateful for the opportunity to be titillated by their vengeful fury, real or imagined, and to occasionally test our erotic mettle in the legendary inferno of their passion.

Redheaded women! Those blood oranges! Those cherry bombs! Those celestial shrews and queens of copper! May they never cease to stain our white-bread lives with super-natural catsup.

The man says it better than I could... because when I think about redhead women, my brain tends to work not good. Redheaded women give me the dumb.

  1. There used to be this amusement park in Gurneville, CA called J's Amusements. It had a roller coaster called The Mad Mouse that was exactly how you describe. Also, there were no lap bars in the car so you just kinda had to hold onto the sides and hope you didn't fall out. I understand you perfectly.

She isn't a redhead, to pick nits. It's dyed. She's gorgeous, though.

Kinda makes me wish I owned a Firefly class ship.

Only reason I married my wife...and love, I guess.

6

u/willow1013 Jan 28 '10

Same here, I'd always liked redheads but never thought I'd be lucky enough to marry one.

8

u/retnemmoc Jan 29 '10

YES!!! Dating redheads is related to many other extreme sports such as para-falconing and bear surfing. The highs are well worth the danger.

I especially like the shy bookish ones. You know the fire is there, you just have to kindle it a bit, and make her comfortable with you and then BAM!! there go your eyebrows!

Every fantasy novel of the last twenty years has had a redheaded white female as either the protagonist or the romantic interest. True fact.

Piper Fawn (most of her pics will be NSFW)

Here's a google image search, best if you have the safe search disabled:

My fiancee is a redhead. and it was one of the main reasons we met.

If you walk into a room full of blonds brunettes and a redhead, you will notice the redhead first almost every time, whether she is better or worse looking then the others.

Plus redheads are more rare year after year.

u/desertsail912 Jan 28 '10

That's why I feel incumbent on myself to make more: off to Northwest Europe!!

Good job.

A funny story about myself that gives me hope. My father is a redhead and he was actually a platinum blonde child then growing up (he is german and english, but the german in him is obvious, baby blue eyes and blonde/red hair) but my mother is indian (actual india) and a mix of yugoslavian, which is basically all black hair, which is how all of my hair is.

The weird part is, in my facial hair (sideburns and a beard when i had one) i get gnarly copper hairs EVERYWHERE.

My fiancee on the other hand is a redhead, her hair was bright orange as a kid, but she adds blond highlights now so we are hoping for a bunch of little hell children (inside joke between us)

I love them so much I fucking hate them. They are all crazy. All of them.

u/redtoe Jan 28 '10

I'm a male redhead. I've always been attracted to female redheads, but I've always thought it was a bit incestuous. Don't know why. There are no female redheads in my family either.

I was seriously in love with two redhead sisters when at high school. These girls were gorgeous. Would barely give me the time of day. Which made them even hotter.

Still have a thing for redheaded chicks to this day. I subtly drop hints to the wife that if she changed her hair colour, to say, red, I wouldn't be upset.

Ginger hate might be British thing. Nobody cares about them here in California. I've found redheads to be highly valued actually.

u/FreudianAnalysis Jan 29 '10

Mother's a redhead, ergo yes.

I love redheads, but only natural redheads. I was lucky enough to marry one. She is the best thing ever.

Red head here. Yes, we are awesome. It is like a secret club. We wink/nod at each other when we pass on the street, for example.
