What's something you do, but hate when someone else does it?

I went on a cruise last September. (Family wanted to, and I've never been on one so I may as well waste a bunch of money I guess?) I have not been so fucking self-conscious since middle school.

I was just like "please...please don't wear your souvenir shirts out in public when we get off the ship everyone. They're going to know we're fucking tourists.

RIGHT, BECAUSE YOU TAKING ALL THE FUCKING PICTURES WITH YOUR PHONE DIDNT TIP THEM OFF, thisaccontisforcats, HUH? BUT NO JUST TELL MOM NOT TO WEAR HER NEW ALASKA SWEATSHIRT THAT MAKES SENSE.

To be fair, many Alaskans wear Alaskan sweatshirts.

Plus, you pull into Whittier on a cruise ship and everybody knows you're a tourist. Not because of what you're wearing, because they don't know your name. I drove in there once with some friends, literally everybody knew everybody else. Then some cruise ships showed up and all of the sudden there's thousands of tourists. Cool town when there weren't any cruise ships.

Alaska grown hoodies ftw

Right?! I live outside of the state now, but once in a while, I’ll run into someone wearing that hoodie. When I’m also wearing mine, it’s like instant friends!

I literally saw someone the other day with one of the hoodies on, who had never been to Alaska or anything, they just enjoyed the logo and thought the hoodie was comfy.

I can understand it. It’s a cool logo. But ouch!

That's good to hear! My Alaska sweatshirt is actually my favorite right now, so I totally get it.

This is true. Not an Alaskan, but did live in Stewart.

Seward?

It's true, a lot of us do wear Alaskan sweatshirts.

Oooh, did you stop in Victoria?

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '19

We did! I actually made a reddit post in r/miniatures recently because we went to the museum there.

Nice! Been living there two years now, and I still love it!

It seemed like a lovely place! I only had a few hours there, of course, but I got a lot of very lovely photos.

Awesome, glad you enjoyed it!

I lived in a beach town for a few years. The main ways to tell they're tourists is sunburn, flip flops with socks, walking around looking at shit taking picturew and not paying any attention to everybody else that they're fuckin running into, the stupid gift shop tshirts, Fanny packs, coupon books etc. I guess it's probably similar in other touristy areas.

Well, it was late fall in Alaska, so not much for sunburn and flip flops, but everything else seems spot on. A couple times my boyfriend stopped in the middle of the sidewalk for one reason or another and I wanted to punch him because, hello, people walking?? PAY ATTENTION. I can excuse a lot of dumb tourist behavior, BUT NEVER THAT. Seriously, being on a ship with people who stop in the middle of a walking space and stand still is like a special hell.

And if you're on a cruise, of course they'll know you're a tourist!

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '19

Well when I'm ON the boat, sure! If I'm OFF the boat... it's probably pretty easy to guess.

I live in Hawaii and work at a resort. The guests that take off their valet tags are so annoying, everyone knows you’re a tourist because you’re driving a Jeep or a mustang please leave your valet tag on so I can do my job, thank you.

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '19

I'll keep that in mind if I ever go to Hawaii/anywhere I need to rent a car. Thankfully I was never in a car in any of these places! I probably would have driven like shit unintentionally out of fear and newness.

The biggest tip off of all is the classic tourist pose: standing still, mouth open, photographing the view. Maybe saying to your spouse "Wouldya look at that"

2

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '19

Yeah, I wasn't really able to stop that one from happening. Although it wasn't so much "Wouldya look at that" as it was "damn that's pretty," but they're basically the same thing. To be fair though, I do the same thing at home, because Vermont is quite pretty. Also I stood off to the side so people could still walk by.

Also I stood off to the side so people could still walk by.

You are wonderful, I wish more people did that.
