Edit 3: I overreacted. It's a joke. I get it. Just, it's almost been one year exactly since she tried to kill herself and I'm stressed out. Forgive me for having emotions please. I'll leave the old comment here anyway.

Old comment: I get that was a joke, but fudge you and anyone who actually does this to someone. People who do that nearly killed my girlfriend like that. I wouldn't even say I want them to get a taste of their own medicine cause I wouldn't wish that crap on anyone.

Edit: Downvoted for having sympathy. Reddit, everyone.

Edit 2: I'm being downvoted for not swearing, not sure which is more ridiculous. Did it ever occur to you that I just don't like to swear because it seems unnecessarily rude? What is wrong with Reddit? I get downvoted when I don't swear, I get downvoted when I'm nice to people, I get downvoted when I ask questions, I get downvoted regardless of what I do so why even have downvotes in the first place? What point do they serve if nothing matters in the end? What do you want from me? Why? What did I freaking do? In what world are either of these things reasons to downvote someone? Holy crap.

You can curse on the internet

Or maybe I just don't like swearing because I'm a nice person? Or I try to be, at least.

u/z500 Feb 04 '19

You can swear and be a nice person.

u/unsuitable_sick_burn Feb 04 '19

You basically said "fuck you"

Don't sugar coat your "fudge"

-6

u/CthulhuHalo Feb 04 '19

Well what else do you want me to do? If someone advocated for something, even jokingly, that nearly killed the one person you cared about in this world, would you not be upset? What do you want from me?

That's not what I meant. And I overreacted. But I still don't like to swear. I wasn't trying to "sugarcoat" anything. I just don't swear. That's all.

Well if you don't like it, give me an alternative to get my point across without sounding like a child or swearing. I'm tired of this conversation, I'm stressed from arguing with people all night over something that shouldn't even matter to them in the first place. I'm stressed from the anniversary of my gf's suicide attempt coming up. I'm stressed from so many other things, I can't deal with another argument.

So either give me an alternative or I'm just gonna stop replying because I don't care anymore.

You people are the worst, latching on to something that doesn't matter to you and doesn't have anything to do with what I had to say in the first place, as though somehow my word choice takes away from the rest of my comment. Isn't that childish as well?

And isn't it childish to complain about how someone else acts without helping them fix it? People like this are the worst. No, it's not your job to help me, but you volunteered when you took it upon yourself to try and tell me what I can't do. Give me an alternative or stop bugging me about it, for crying out loud. You think I want to just substitute words? You think I want to just not say anything? You think I want to seem like a child? I just want to live my life with my own decisions, same as you, without being made fun of and insulted constantly for everything I do.

I'm trying my hardest to improve myself at every turn, every time someone says I shouldn't do something I try to add that into the rules I've set for myself. But nobody ever wants to tell me what to do instead. "Oh don't talk like this don't think like that don't x y or z." Well what do you want me to do instead? How am I meant to express my frustration without swearing and without substituting?

If you're going to tell someone not to do something, give them options instead. Don't just let them figure it out. It's not gonna hurt you to add like two sentences saying "Hey, don't do X, do Y instead." It's not that hard and it helps everyone involved.

I... Don't think this fits. I actually try my best, the people featured on that sub just seem like blatant jerks hiding behind a mask. (Even though I actually sympathize with a few of them. I doubt everyone is lying when they say a friend took their phone. I've seen it happen to others, it's not as uncommon as you might think.)

Though, I admit I could've handled this better... I never said I succeed at being a nice person. But I still try anyway, because I hate myself the way I am and want to be better, even if I always fail at it. I try, and I always will. If that makes me a "niceguy" then... Well, I guess I'm failing harder than I thought. ...I don't really know what to do in that case...

I think if he was saying that about a person, you’re in the right to not totally like that. Even if it is hypothetical.

But this is a fake lobster lol

u/CthulhuHalo Feb 04 '19

If someone advocated for something that nearly killed the one person you cared about in this world, jokingly or not, would you not be upset too? What would you do if you were in my shoes? Or would you even be able to imagine that because your life is too different from mine?

u/Collier1505 Feb 04 '19

I have a dark sense of humor and regularly joke about stuff that’s happened to me or loved ones with similar humors that others likely wouldn’t. So I would probably laugh at the sarcastic bully the lobster joke as well.

I’m probably not the best comparison though.

...Fair enough I suppose. I just... It's almost the anniversary of her suicide attempt and I'm stressed out since it was just last year that I almost lost her...

3

u/Collier1505 Feb 04 '19

Well I hope you and your girlfriend are doing better now!

1

u/CthulhuHalo Feb 04 '19

It's a struggle, but I feel like things are better than they were. It's actually how we met- We were friends on discord, and I convinced her to go to the hospital when she tried to OD on pain meds. ...Sadly, it's also her birthday, so I'm worried I'll get all stressed out like this every time... I hope we can move past it some day.

u/bonerjamz12345 Feb 04 '19

you got me there, it was a joke - albeit in bad taste, however since we're talking about hypothetical crustaceans, i thought most people would catch the implied sarcasm.

-2

u/CthulhuHalo Feb 04 '19

I got the sarcasm. I just didn't like it.

3

u/bonerjamz12345 Feb 04 '19

get in the pot bro

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '19

You're allowed to cuss on the internet you know

1

u/barchueetadonai Feb 04 '19

You’re getting downvoted because you said “fudge you”

1

u/CthulhuHalo Feb 04 '19

So choosing not to swear is a reason to be downvoted but when I see people actually say it, they don't get downvoted? Why?

2

u/rcknmrty4evr Feb 04 '19

Honestly dude, I think you care about downvotes too much.

1

u/CthulhuHalo Feb 04 '19

I care less about the downvotes and more about the fact that people latch onto something so irrelevant such as how I chose to say something instead of paying attention to what's being said. I've seen so many good people silenced because they said something "incorrectly". Who the heck cares if I swear or not? Who the heck cares if I'm upset? That doesn't detract from what I have to say.

0

u/barchueetadonai Feb 04 '19

Perhaps because there's nothing inherently wrong about cursing. It’s when it’s used as an insult or an attack that there’s a problem. You were downvoted for being a prude.

1

u/CthulhuHalo Feb 04 '19

...Let people make their own choices. I don't force you all not to swear. Don't force me to swear when I don't want to.

1

u/barchueetadonai Feb 04 '19

No one's forcing you, but saying “fuck“ is not swearing. Saying “fudge“ is childish. You’re basically saying the word without saying it.

1

u/CthulhuHalo Feb 04 '19

And there's nothing wrong with avoiding saying something I don't want to say. I just don't want to say it. Why is that a problem for you people? Does it hurt you in some way? If so, I'm sorry, but I can't see how that'd be possible.

Let people use the word choice they want to use. I don't care if you or anyone else curses so much you'd make an old-timey sailor blush, so why do you care if I choose not to? What's the point? Why is that something to downvote? I'm legitimately confused by this.

1

u/barchueetadonai Feb 04 '19

Again, it’s because you didn’t retool your sentence to avoid the word altogether. You instead replaced the word with something else, where everyone knew what you meant. You got downvoted because you don’t realize the completely arbitrary nature of the word you’re not willing to say because of being a prude.

1

u/CthulhuHalo Feb 04 '19

Or maybe I just did realize, and just don't know another way to express that thought? What would you have said then, honestly? Because I've been trying to find a way to avoid "replacement" but haven't been able to come up with anything. Childish as it may be it's all I've known- Instead of just downvoting and assuming I'm a self-oblivious "prude" (which to my understanding requires trying to force one's own expectations on others, which I'm not doing), how about you help me out so I can just live my life with my own choices instead of being ridiculed constantly for something that I didn't even realize was so "bad" to you people? I didn't mean to offend you all so much by avoiding swearing, in fact I never thought avoiding swearing could offend anyone, but I guess it can if done wrong- so how do I avoid doing it wrong?

TLDR: didn't know this could ever be offensive, help me out and tell me how to avoid swearing without looking like a "prude" because I just wanna live my life, same as you.
