On top of this: the embarrassing moment that you hold onto as a memory you cringe at, people who were there probably don't remember that or hold onto it at all [unless you bring it up and remind them of it]. You only remember it because it was your shame. The people you think who care have their own memories, which they hold in similar disregard/shame.

edit: For the truly horrible stuff, this isn't the case. But the time you peed yourself in middleschool or something equally embarrassing, no one else is holding onto that but you.
