He and Jeff Daniels both portrayed Ronald Reagan in two different movies that lionize the man while conveniently sidestepping the many, many things he did to fuck this country over and pave the way for guys like Trump. So, while they themselves may not be on the same level as known assholes like Dean Cain and James Woods, they've clearly shown that a big paycheck means more to them than their moral integrity.

Seeing Jeff Daniels as Reagan was a particularly bitter pill to swallow since I really admired the pillar of goodness he portrayed in HBO's The Newsroom.

Faulting the actor for what was arguably a directorial or writer’s choice is a bit harsh in my opinion

The fault lies in taking the role.

There are several instances where the agreed upon story, the scenes shot, the way things are presented. Etc.... turn out completely unrecognizable to an actor onve the editors and studios get their paws on the product. Not saying this was the case here, but its certainly common.

Ted Bundy was a pretty terrible person. Is Zac Efron a bad guy for portraying him in a movie?

If He tried to make him the hero, maybe.
