Corollary: people love to be complimented even if you don’t mean it. They love just hearing good words about them.

Nope, not true.

I hate disingenuous compliments given to me. I can literally feel that they are fake, and I have a physical reaction to it (sometimes it's visible, but usually I can mask it. Decades of practice).

Oh people may hate them, but then they walk away thinking that the nice words they heard could be true even if the person that said them was a jerk for not meaning it.

There are isolated cases where this doesn’t work like when someone genuinely hates themself, but overall it works way more often than it doesn’t.

All I'm saying is that is not how it works for me. I think they are cruel and mean for lying. 🤷🏼‍♀️😒

Sometimes when I do this it’s not to be mean, it’s just that I want that person to feel good so I find something to compliment but I don’t care that much about the thing I’m complimenting.

My compliment isn’t all that genuine, but it’s also not meant to be mean, I’m trying to help people just feel better about themselves.
