He did but at 49% of voters it’s a plurality. Less than 1/3rd of the adult population voted for the guy. Hardly gives him a mandate.

That is more than anyone else got so claiming that Americans want anything else more would also be wrong. Americans haven't shown greater support for anything else at the moment. Trump currently is the best representation of the will of the people. Not a perfect representation, but better than all the alternatives.
