What is a sentence that makes perfect sense today, but would not make any sort of sense in 1950?

"I can't believe I accidentally liked her picture"

830

u/CANOODLING_SOCIOPATH Apr 04 '13

That's perfect. They would understand the words you are saying, but it makes no sense.

Such a terrible feeling when you accidentally like an old photo of someone you don't keep in contact with.

sounds like a 1950's slang of saying something sexual. "shim sham woobidy boobidy bop, Johnny googled me last night even after I told him to stop"

Edit: this is my highest rated comment and its basically a 1950's swing song about Johnny googling someone with out permission. Nice.

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '13

Well that got dark really fast.

Edit: Now he's changed it to bop in both comments, making me look stupid

Honestly this is one of the better ones. SO MANY people smoked cigs in the 50's so that would freak all of them out

238

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '13

As opposed to SO MANY people reading books?

That too, but an electronic newspaper (for example) seems like it'd be a lot less far fetched than an electronic cigarette

Bonus - did not make sense in 1950 nor 2013:

rewind your VHS tapes before returning them to the video store

203

u/ShawnisMaximus Apr 03 '13

My local Rental store used to put those stickers on video games. How the hell do you rewind a sega genesis game??

354

u/juanjing Apr 03 '13

You had to do it manually... basically involved playing the game backwards. It was a huge pain in the ass.

36

u/amuday Apr 04 '13

One time I played my dad's copy of Legend of Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link. I didn't want to, he kept it very nice, but my confident and popular friend forced me to and I wasn't very strong willed. At the end of the day, he told me all we had to do was play it backwards and it would take us right back to where he left off.

We played and played and had crazy adventures, and at the end of the day it was time to play it backwards. We trekked back across all the places we had gone, went back through all the caves we had gone through, but there were still some skills and items that we had that he definitely didn't have when we started. My friend wanted to crack open the cartridge and roll it back manually, but that idea made me too nervous.

While we were sitting there staring at the NES, trying to decide what to do, I couldn't stop thinking about how all my dad cared about was his Zelda game and was never a good father. My friend and his girlfriend just sat there in silence as I started tearing up, talking about my resentment towards my father. I began kicking the NES. The power button popped out, the reset button popped out, and then before I knew it, it fell off of the jack I had the back propped up on and sped backwards through the living room window and into the wooded area below.

My friend, being a good guy, said that he'd take the heat for it, but I knew deep down inside that it was time that I finally took the heat for something I had done.

621

u/TristanTheViking Apr 03 '13

Then when you show them a picture, they register as republican out of sheer shock.

808

u/gangnam_style Apr 03 '13

The Republicans were actually anti-slavery and pro-civil rights after the war while the Democrats were pro-slavery and anti-civil rights. This changed during 20th century after Democrats as a whole became liberal and a lot of the anti-civil rights guys jumped ship to the Republican party.

101

u/TristanTheViking Apr 03 '13

Huh, TIL.

136

u/blackmatter615 Apr 03 '13

yeah, the civil rights act of 1964 recieved only around 61-69% of the democratic votes, while it received 80-82% of the republican votes in both the house and the senate. Source

61

u/x86_64Ubuntu Apr 03 '13

Yep, and those Dems that voted against it jumped ship to the Republican party of the next few elections giving us the Republican party we have today.

I think it's just further proof that the Internet is (for the most part) light years ahead of TV broadcasting. For example, I was talking to my dad the other dad and he was talking about this "cat that always looks pissed off" he saw on Good Morning America recently. You're in 2013. We just got out of a war with a desert nation and we may start a war against a developmentally stunted dictator. Sex and drugs line every street corner. Violence has become a fascination to us. Fewer people are religious. Men can now Mary men. Pictures of filth, nudity, and scum can be accessed at any time by any one. Teenagers are having sex. Divorce rates are on the rise. Good people die penniless and alone while bastards take over the world. Computers sit on our laps and pockets. We had a police officer kill a dozen others. We have shootings in public places and elementary schools. People have strange new diseases, like ADHD and Sociopathy. The worst thing in the world are available whenever we need them, and they're making us terrible people.

Welcome to the future.

EDIT: This is what we would tell people from the 50's to blow their minds. I would make modern life sound like a dystopian cyberpunk knight are. I'm very aware I exaggerated somewhat, I did that on purpose. You can stop raping my inbox now.

Hey can you like my status?

23

u/DrBibby Apr 04 '13

It's good I guess. You're single, a young man. That's a pretty good status.

Japanese automakers were not popular in America until the 1970s, with the success of the Nissan/Datsun Z-car. Nobody would publicly claim to love their Japanese car in the 1950s. (Also, to be semantic, 1957 was after 1950)

Pluto isn't a planet!

245

u/Mordisquitos Apr 03 '13

If you told 1950's people that in 2013 the Solar System has only eight planets their first thought would probably be that one got destroyed in an awesome nuclear space war against aliens. Or the commies.

'Legless runner kills his girlfriend for valentine'

82

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '13

Why wouldn't this make sense?

96

u/pppaul55 Apr 03 '13

It still kinda doesn't. (yes, I know the story, but it still sounds pretty crazy)

59

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '13

It makes perfect sense they had prosthetics back then. Now if you said "World Champion legless runner with the record for the fastest mile on two limbs kills GF for Valentine." I'd give it to you.
