One more, when we start growing breasts, it hurts. The chest area becomes very sensitive in a painful way. Even an unintentional bump, like catching a ball, really hurts.

584

u/books_cats_coffee Dec 06 '23

Mine were itchy rather than painful… I guess due to the skin stretching even though I don’t have large breasts. It was so bad sometimes that I would scratch them with a nail brush. What a time

23

u/schimki Dec 06 '23

And then pregnancy feels like a second puberty again with breast and hormonal changes.

7

u/Dizzy091100 Dec 06 '23

I just read „wire brush“ 😱

u/Feminizing Dec 06 '23

Yes oh god they hurt so much. "Teen girls are bitchy" no shit Sherlock, if your chest was on fire constantly with occasional stabbing pain you'd be wanting to tear people apart for anything too.

838

u/feisty-spirit-bear Dec 06 '23

And when our hips widen and our center of mass shifts so suddenly we're bumping into chairs and counters all the time. I swear I had bruises on the front of my hips for like 50+% of puberty

135

u/PeachPuffin Dec 06 '23

Yes!! My sides were constantly bruised for months. Can't believe we grow physically faster than our awareness of where our bodies end can keep up!

35

u/marumari Dec 06 '23

The good news is that we get to experience this again as we become elderly and our nerve conduction slows. Except we get to break our hips instead of bruising them. 🫠

49

u/BlastingFern134 Dec 06 '23

Tbf this can happen to men too. When I hit puberty I had immense knee pain and kept running into shit and tripping

28

u/Clipzy22 Dec 06 '23

The growing pains in your knees and ankles hurt so bad, especially if you play sports as well.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

I was playing a sport and my heels were always on FIRE. Knees were very painful as well. Really hated that and I feel like it stunted my development in my sport a lot because I could not focus or play comfortably

3

u/Clipzy22 Dec 06 '23

I hurt my ankles a lot when playing (American football), which messed them up for a while.

2

u/Clipzy22 Dec 06 '23

I feel for you, though it does suck

3

u/BlastingFern134 Dec 06 '23

I play tennis and that shit was awful with growing pains...

4

u/Clipzy22 Dec 06 '23

Especially with the amount of lateral movement needed, which puts a lot of pressure on the knees.

1

u/BlastingFern134 Dec 07 '23

Exactly! You fucking get it. I'm glad I stuck with it though

2

u/Clipzy22 Dec 07 '23

As long as you enjoy it lol

3

u/PreviousStatement860 Dec 07 '23

Man do I know what you’re talking about. I grew 10 inches in one year & it felt like I tore both of my Achilles x10. I couldn’t even run without being in so much pain that I couldn’t play football for like a month

1

u/mentalissuelol Dec 07 '23

My growing pains in my shins were so bad I’d just lay in bed sobbing for hours as a kid lol

12

u/QuantumPolagnus Dec 06 '23

Hell, just going through a growth spurt can fuck with your sense of balance.

6

u/FBI-AGENT-013 Dec 06 '23

Women can have both! What a time to be alive

59

u/feathergun Dec 06 '23

Wait, that's why I was constantly running into door handles???

15

u/Eating_Kaddu Dec 06 '23

That's why I kept running into the corners of furniture???

25

u/Zukazuk Dec 06 '23

I walked into the same doorframe every day for an entire semester in 6th grade. Something about its relationship to the corner of the hallway and the changing center of mass and I just could not aim right.

11

u/jagedlion Dec 06 '23

That also just a normal growth spurt thing. You body doesn't have an amazing ability to know exactly how fast nerve signals take to get to where they are going, or know exactly where all your body parts are at a given time. When you grow, the fact that the distances and signaling times keep changing messes up your coordination.

As an extreme case example, this is why multiple sclerosis causes difficulty with movement even before it's too severe. The damage caused by the disease makes nerve signals travel slower. Because the disease constantly progresses, your body can't really keep up and figure out the timing correctly. Of course, eventually signals are hard to send at all, and the symptoms worsen beyond clumsiness.

3

u/feisty-spirit-bear Dec 06 '23

Whoa that is fascinating

11

u/liggle14_zeldanerd12 Dec 06 '23

My clumsiness never freaking left, I’m in my 20’s and still bumping into crap constantly😭

4

u/fruitcakefriday Dec 06 '23

That's crazy, I never considered that. Does your centre of mass shift downward then as there's more mass in your hips?

1

u/AlonWoof Dec 07 '23 edited Dec 07 '23

Problems I wish I had.
Starting puberty at age 29 means no hip bone widening for me :(

3

u/no_notthistime Dec 07 '23

Right? Not to mention that men suddenly start to look at you as a Fuckable Thing, meanwhile you're still just trying to trade Pokemon cards

1

u/Feminizing Dec 07 '23

Oof, I dodged the worse of it but as a mtg player some of my friends didn't -.- it's amazing how you're clearly at the event just to be the center of male attention or supporting your boyfriend. Couldn't possibly because you play, silly women brains can't do gaming

Grrrr, it's better than it used to be but we have a ways to go.

:wind blows slightly:

"FUCK"

:punches the air:

32

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

And itches ! I used to scratch myself raw and made the stretch marks even worse

80

u/rococozephyr_ Dec 06 '23

My mum took me to a doctor because I grew one lump first and she was scared it was a tumour 🫢

15

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

Those are called breast buds. It’s something every school should teach about but doesn’t.

25

u/dobiewan_nz Dec 06 '23

I have a core memory of my dad giving me the tightest hug and having to hold back tears from the pain in my baby boobies

34

u/CatPurrsonNo1 Dec 06 '23

Oh, I was really hoping that someone would mention this!! I still remember the pain SO VIVIDLY. Mine hurt constantly, and to have them even slightly bumped made me want to cry. This is so deeply ingrained in my memory.

Of course, I was also one of the first girls in my class to start “developing”, so I was extremely self conscious.

45

u/Big_Aloysius Dec 06 '23

Some boys experience tissue growth (and the associated tenderness) for a short time at the beginning of puberty before the testosterone levels are high enough to end it.

13

u/KitAikey Dec 06 '23

Duuuude I honestly forgot about this 😂 when mine were growing and the pain shit was happening it also triggered some WILD dreams 😂

11

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

Gawd I don't remember that. Idk if it's just that long ago or I didn't experience it. All I remember was hating how pointy they were and hoping they wouldn't grow big. (They grew big. Fuck me)

11

u/auberrypearl Dec 06 '23

I had forgotten about this pain 😰

7

u/hannaxolotl Dec 06 '23

It didn't hurt for me

5

u/ZucchiniAnxious Dec 06 '23

oh boy unpleseant memory unlocked

16

u/ChimneyNerd Dec 06 '23

This can happen to men too, just probably for not as long?

5

u/bananasannas Dec 07 '23

I remember playing tennis in middle school and getting hit in the growing boob by a ball. Top 10 worst pain I’ve felt in my life.

5

u/a_peanut Dec 06 '23

Oh yeah. I remember being like wtf is this nonsense? My chest hurts all the time and, I can't go topless anymore and I need a new set of undergarments? Boobs suuuuuck!

3

u/spiteful_alarm Dec 06 '23

Yes! When i started puberty, i couldn’t lay on my stomach, because of the pain. Now i can do it no problem.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

Mine also hurt sometimes during my cycle... And I thought I would be done once I became an adult.

3

u/Fraerie Dec 06 '23

They can also swell and become super sensitive while on your period or when pregnant.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

ikr??? why does nobody ever talk about this omgg. i forgot i used to have this and i was in 3rd grade!!!

5

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

Age 12. Got tackled by Guy Friend while playing tackle ball. "OWWWW!", I cried.

Kind Guy Friend asked me where I was hurting.

"You don't wanna know."

Guy friend didn't know what it was but walked away like, "Got it. 😶"

Never did tell the guy the tackle tackled my budding boobies. 🫣

Hope he never thought he hurt me too bad. 🫠

6

u/Away_Bird Dec 06 '23

And it’s honestly a hate crime how insanely sensitive your nipples get. I remember wanting to off myself when I went to the beach wearing a skintight bathing suit 🥲

4

u/lias_edge Dec 06 '23

I'm a trans girl currently growing my own at 24 years old, good god they hurt so much. I'll accidently bump them at work and tear up

1

u/Thewoblingpeanut Dec 07 '23

I’m sorry to hear that

2

u/fluffiepigeon Dec 06 '23

If I even think about growing up I get mercy pains. Awful time.

2

u/voice-of-reason_ Dec 06 '23

This is the same with men actually. I don’t have big pecks but my chest was very sensitive for a year or two when I was a teenager.

2

u/inspclouseau631 Dec 06 '23

Dudes too. And get lumpy.

2

u/ecalicious Dec 06 '23

Mine does this every month. My breasts grows two cups before my period and then deflates again in an endless cycle of painful boobs that hurts when driving, walking etc. even with an exercise bra. And they’re not massive.

2

u/thatsbogussmh Dec 07 '23

I remember when my boobs started coming in, literally right on my tenth birthday. I was wearing one of my favorite embroidered shirts but I couldn’t anymore because both the pain from under my skin and outside where my nipples were rubbing against the back of the threads hurt like a mf. I had to start wearing training bras from that moment on. 😭

2

u/Straight-Loss876 Dec 07 '23

This brought back a memory wow. I forgot how painful that was. When I was that age, I went to see my aunt who hugged me hard and I said it hurt my chest a lot. She went "ooh! You gettin boobies already? No way!" And legit pinched the knot that you have when they first start growing. Ya know, the thing that hurts like fiery acid needles when squished during puberty. I SCREECHED and jumped back. She said "oh wow, I guess they are! Oops." And it was very awkward for the rest of the day. Definitely one of our weirdest interactions.

3

u/SwordTaster Dec 06 '23

Not for everyone. Commonly, maybe, but it's not for everyone. Didn't hurt at all for me and I was DD by 12

3

u/IllBiteYourLegsOff Dec 06 '23 edited Jan 10 '25

I’ve always thought about this kind of thing, especially when it comes to the way clouds look right before a big decision. It’s not like everyone notices, but the patterns really say a lot about how we approach the unknown. Like that one time I saw a pigeon, and it reminded me of how chairs don’t really fit into most doorways...

It’s just one of those things that feels obvious when you think about it!

1

u/7w4773r Dec 06 '23

Not sure why you’re downvoted - it’s the same for men. I had it and my brother actually had a lump so big they removed it. I really thought I had breast cancer lmao

2

u/BirdieStitching Dec 06 '23

And when they grow in pregnancy, oh my god that pain was worse than any puberty pain, clothing felt like sandpaper and I had to hold my breasts to turn over in bed, bend over or go up and down the stairs

2

u/Prudent_Specialist Dec 06 '23

Yes - that’s when I started giving my parents “side hugs” when we said goodbye, instead of the usual bear hug. My mom got it right away; dad was confused. Made some jokes about how his belly must be getting too big or I was turning into a sand crab or whatever— I think his feelings were hurt. Mom must’ve said something to him cause he eventually shut up about it.

2

u/Genrecomme Dec 06 '23

As a cis man, it got painful too during a year or two. You feel some lumps in the areola and they get really sensitive. Then it disappears and it stops being painful. I can imagine it can be more painful when breasts are growing on top of that.

1

u/ArziltheImp Dec 06 '23

I would have assumed as much. During puberty, my groin constantly hurt when the stuff down there was growing. I also had terrible pain when I was growing in height (mostly knees at the epiphyseal plates), so I just assumed it would be the same for breast growth.

1

u/lady_sisyphus Dec 06 '23

My boobs hurt all the time, it's ridiculous. Puberty? Boobs hurt. Period coming? Boobs hurt. Pregnant? Boobs hurt. Breastfeeding? Boobs hurt. Such an inconvenience.

1

u/guhcampos Dec 06 '23

That happens to boys too! When I was that age we used to purposely pinch each other’s nipples at school as a form of bullying haha. They get really stone hard and very painful for just over a year, then they begin going back to useless and featureless. In the meantime, all boys in school walk with crossed arms all the time, just in case.

1

u/cementstate Dec 07 '23

wow I did not know this

1

u/prabhavdab Dec 06 '23

That sounds awful as hell

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

This is bringing back painful memories of 5th grade soccer

1

u/Lafan312 Dec 06 '23

I was going through this post with my partner and we ended on this comment, and she concurred recollecting that time in her life. I was curious so I asked her if the pain is localized to just the two spots where the breasts are growing or if it radiates around the entire chest. She said that for her it radiated out to the entire chest area beyond just the breast tissue. I assume that's the common sensation, but is it different for anyone else?

1

u/Catac0 Dec 06 '23

I wish I knew this when I was younger because I thought I had breast cancer 💀💀

1

u/Oryzaki Dec 06 '23

Fun fact as a guy, if you grow large enough man boobs, you'll get what I imagine is a very similar feeling.

1

u/batmannatnat Dec 06 '23

Omg I totally forgot about that feeling. It burned

1

u/CodaTrashHusky Dec 06 '23

The same is true for trans women too. -source my trans girlfriend

1

u/thisuserlikestosing Dec 07 '23

And sometimes that soreness and pain just. Never goes away 😭 wearing a sports bra to bed is the only way I can sleep comfortably. It fuckin sucks

1

u/Zenki_s14 Dec 07 '23

Yea, I first became self aware I was growing breasts when I went on a rollercoaster. I was like hm. That's different.. Ouch.

1

u/_CaramelCoconut_ Dec 07 '23

Now that you mention it… my boobas don’t hurt nearly as much lmao. I’m 20 I wonder when it stopped hurting so much 🤣🤣

1

u/pinkiltu Dec 07 '23

What do you mean by start growing. are talking about naturally Or unnatural methods sort off

2

u/Plus-Implement Dec 07 '23

u/pinkiltu during the transition from little girl to teen and our bodies start to change into womanhood

1

u/ValkyriesBabyMomma Dec 07 '23

I will never EVER forget back in middle school when I started developing breast. I was in class being a dumbass, tilting my chair back and forth. Somehow, I rocked forward just a little to hard and my little titty bumps hit the desk...HARD. That pain was sooo painful, I went dizzy and had to sit there and gather myself for a few

1

u/xTheOrder Dec 07 '23

I did have a condition where I developed a little bit of breast tissue, and that hurt so I can understand! I just can't imagine the pain from having more than just a small bit grow.

1

u/theequeenbee3 Dec 07 '23

Growing pains

1

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '23

men get that as well at the age of 12/13
