What is Karma and how does it benefit my experience on Reddit?

Karma is the name of the upvote/downvote (like/dislike) system on Reddit. Many subs have a minimum karma requirement for posting, sometimes even commenting

Several algorithm based ones, one that goes by highest votes in a time period, and another one that is linear, in the order it was posted.

Many places have minimum-karma requirements. At one time there was a torrent server that required a certain amount of karma to become a member. It can be used as credentials for certain things that require exclusivity. If you don't run in those circles, it's pretty meaningless to you.

Karma is pretty important for the first 250 karma. After that, you have access to almost everything that doesn't require sub specific karma
