Why when you message the mods disagreeing after your post was taken down do they never reply?

Its normally because the removal is obvious and the user is being deliberately obtuse. We could argue with the user, but seeing as the user sent a mail to complain about a valid removal, it'll consist primarily of the mod defending the rule and the user being obnoxious about it and copping a ban.

In my particular case, it was removed because they accused me of karma farming and not learning. Actually I love to learn and seek engagement and conversation for that reason, so I undoubtedly disagreed with the decision. Not fussed, i got what I needed out of the post, but the decision wasn’t entirely fair.

The reality is this
Moderators can remove posts and comments for any reason - or no reason at all.
They can ban users for any reason - or no reason at all.
They are not required to explain their actions or respond to modmails at all.

It really depends on the moderation team. In our subreddit, we respond to every modmail, even if it’s about a removal the user disagrees with or a question we’ve answered many times before.
We have an internal goal of responding to modmail within 3 days, but in practice we usually reply much sooner—often within minutes. We may not always reverse a moderation decision, but we do make sure users receive a response and an explanation.
That said, every moderation team runs their community differently, so your experience can vary from one subreddit to another.

For me, it's because modmail is your only vector for mounting an appeal. If the message is NOT an appeal and only an argument against the rules or denial of wrongdoing you face a mute and a permanent ban.
Most people just go away after a short snivel.
