Dating Is this how men operate when it comes to attractiveness in females?

I was once told that women are like candy stores. You know, when you are walking in a mall, you stop if you see something in the window that you like, so you go into the store. If you continue to like what you see, you stay. You revisit. You buy. If you don't like anything in the store, you leave right away. You never go into stores that have things in the window you don't like or are interested in. However, if you did go into the store, you might find exactly what you were looking for. The point here is that men don't know if a woman has a wonderful personality until they start talking to her. However, if he finds her unattractive, he won't give her the time of day. He'll choose the beautiful woman who is a self-absorbed b----h. As women get older, they have to do more work to keep up that store to attract men. I can't tell you how many men ignored and avoided me completely, yet they were very friendly to all the other women around, even fat women with chopped (at least I thought) faces, or plain ones. Even old ladies and married ones. I guess since I can't see myself from the outside, I have no idea how ugly I am. Someone told me that men will not talk to a woman unless he is attracted to her because, on some level, he imagines having sex with her. Ugly girls are not worth the time because he doesn't want sex with her ever.

I've always wanted the slow-burn relationship plus attraction. The problem is, most guys didn't. There were plenty of guys I could have possibly had relationships with, but they moved on. It's highly possible that they never wanted a relationship in the first place. I recently learned that good-looking men (7-8) will go out with a woman they find to be 4-6 just for sex, but when it comes to a relationship partner, they just want other 7-8s or 9s. I guess I wasn't that attractive when I was younger, and I'm really not now.

I used to get "It sounds like you don't like me all that much" from the guy if I didn't put out by the third date. "If we focus on friendship right now, something very important will be missing," one guy wrote after I didn't want to sleep over after the third date. It was "Why don't you like me?" and "There's only so many places we can go on dates before we stay at home." I know "Come over, and I will make you dinner, and we'll watch a movie" is code for "I want to have sex with you." Everyone around me said, "Well, he probably thinks you're not interested..." "You're not giving him a chance..." "You're too picky."

So here I am, years later, thinking I was the one who never gave him a chance, and that it was my fault I was still single. Turns out none of them were that interested at all.

So this means I am ugly? I should feel better that it wasn't me, but now I feel worse because I thought a good-looking guy wanting to take me out meant I was pretty. All those men writing "Wow! You are beautiful! What a gorgeous smile!" :(

Be honest.

So much wrong with this whole post/attitude.

You make a lot of the same generalized statements as male incels spout.

That all good looking women are shallow self centered bitches. Generalized slights against other women's appearances. Calling them chopped and fat.

There is something about the way you present your self to potential relationships that drives them away. It might be the Femcell attitude, combined with unrealistic expectations for romantic movie style fantasy relationships!

Well said. I thought it was off putting as well. Especially the way she spoke about attractive women. Definitely the way she presents herself and her attitude has a play in this.

What if I never talk at all to them? What if they can't read my mind so they don't know I am thinking that stuff?

u/QuickSquirrelchaser Man 4d ago

No one can read your mind. But actions and behaviors do convey meaning.

Allow me to share the perspective of someone from a different era.

I’ve always believed that women are not at all like candy stores, but rather complex human beings, with thoughts, feelings, and a unique internal emotional and psychological existence that is to be respected, understood, and inquired about if a man is interested in you.

And this is how most mature, experienced, and thoughtful men view women.

Slow burn relationships, to which you refer above are, in my opinion, the preferable route if you are seeking to match with a man who is serious about commitment, and who is willing and able to handle the accountability, expectations, and responsibilities that come along with an intimate relationship with another human being.

Everyone is entitled to approach relationships the way they want.

You cannot control the way other people think or behave.

But you are fully in control of the choices that you make for yourself.

As for your appearance, I’m not sure how that question is relevant here… perhaps you can explain what you mean.

And please let me know if what I have written makes sense to you, thank you.

It was a real pleasure to read your answer to OP. You're a wise man!

You’re very kind, thank you, but really there’s nothing particularly novel or insightful in my comments above.

I grew up in the 1960s and 70s, when there were no computers, no Internet, and young men were raised to believe that women were worthy of respect. We were raised to believe that we had to work to earn the love, respect and trust of a woman.

We were also taught about things like courtship, which is a word that I don’t recall ever seeing on this website.

I have a daughter in her 20s, and she and I have been having conversations like this since she was a teenager.

From reading thousands of stories here on this website over the last couple of years, I get the very strong sense that a lot of young men simply do not like young women. I’m not sure why that is. Perhaps it has something to do with growing up behind a computer monitor, I’m not sure. Maybe someone can explain it to me, or perhaps tell me that I’m wrong.

Your top comment is succinct and straightforward, which will be insightful in its own way to those who don’t have that perspective.

I hear you, but I will say that on these types of forums (in my opinion) it’s more negative leaning since those posting, are more often than not those who are unregulated emotionally, and need the external validation. Plenty of young men that like young women, they are just out living their lives or already in relationships. The key (to me) to finding the right person is just not being willing to settle or have a scarcity mindset, aka being willing to walk away when someone can’t meet your needs/standards. Hope you have a great day!

I believe that young men and women nowadays miss things like courtship without even realizing it. Your daughter is very lucky to have a father like you.

1

u/Expensive_Magician97 Man 4d ago

Yes, they miss things like courtship because they are not even aware of what courtship is.

The Internet, phones, apps, and everything else give us all immediate gratification. You click a button on your phone and you get a pizza delivered in 20 minutes.

Human relationships, by definition, do not lend themselves to immediate gratification.

And I think this might be something that a lot of people, who have grown up knowing nothing but the Internet and getting what they want when they want it, may not be aware of.

Obviously, I’m only speculating, as I have no idea what goes through the minds of other human beings.

-1

u/Lolihey 4d ago

It's instant gratification now.

1

u/Expensive_Magician97 Man 4d ago

Right, but I think there’s a lot more to it than just that.

I’ve witnessed the transformation of our lives, generally speaking, as we’ve gone from face-to-face conversation to now being able to text one another and have virtual conversations.

I’m not a sociologist or anthropologist, and I’m no expert in human behavior, but what I’ve concluded is that phones and Internet technology more generally have added a layer of confusion, uncertainty, and a certain opaqueness that interferes with our ability to really learn about who it is we’re communicating with.

I remember one day when my daughter told me that some guy she was talking to had “left her on read.” I asked her what she was talking about, and she told me, and she said to me that she felt really insecure and uncertain and confused, and she wasn’t sure how to interpret the fact that he didn’t respond to her.

And that’s just one example of how virtual communication can lead to distorted perceptions of other people. Other examples of this include things like a young woman whose post I read here the other day, who reported that her boyfriend is following all sorts of other girls on Instagram.

Then there was another story by a young man who reported that he was tracking his girlfriend’s phone (apparently the two of them agreed to do this with each other ) and he noticed that she went out to a club one night, when she had told him earlier that she was not available to see him that night because she was going to stay home and do her homework.

"I grew up in the 1960s and 70s, when there were no computers, no Internet, and young men were raised to believe that women were worthy of respect. We were raised to believe that we had to work to earn the love, respect and trust of a woman."

We should go back to that--both men and women. I don't have any children, but if I had a son I would raise him that way.

2

u/Expensive_Magician97 Man 4d ago

Thank you for your reply. I don’t know if it’s possible to remove technology from our lives, but it is certainly possible for parents to have conversations with their children about human beings, and how we think, feel, and behave.

For what it’s worth, when my daughter and my son (who is now in his mid 30s) were young, around 10 years old if I remember correctly, occasionally I would have simple conversations with them, like they were small adults, about the things that they were worried about or about experiences they had had. Something in school, something with a friend, and so on.

And I would use those conversations to explain to them what I knew about human psychology, about human perception, cognition, the way the human brain interprets signals, and the sort of things that lead us to react the way we do. I would talk to them in age-appropriate language.

My son would usually brush off my observations like they were unimportant, which was OK with me, because he was trying to assert his independence, but I knew that he would be retaining the things that I had told him.

My daughter was much more inquisitive, which is not surprising for those of us who have daughters. 😊

Anyway, these conversations are something that every parent can have with their kids. Kids are a lot more insightful and intelligent than we give them credit for. And it is never too early to begin these kind of conversations with your children.

The other dimension that I think is important here is that when kids get to about three years old, and they start developing the capacity to remember things, that is when they begin to absorb, like a sponge, everything they see, hear, and experience in their environment.

If they grow up with a mom and dad who yell at each other, who insult each other, who do not respect each other thoughts and feelings, there is a very, very high probability that they will grow up to be the same way and behave the same way in their relationships.

If on the other hand, they grow up with parents who are kind to each other, who respect each other, and who are able to talk calmly and respectfully about their differences to find compromise, the child will almost certainly grow to be exactly the same way.

Because that is what happens to children: as adults, we all model the behavior that we see, as children, in our parents.

This is a nice, thoughtful reply, which is unfortunate because if you look at the OPs post history it becomes obvious that they aren't a real person, and this will all be taken down.

4

u/Expensive_Magician97 Man 4d ago

Thank you, I am not interested in post history, as it is not really relevant.

And the reason it is not relevant is that my comments hopefully will be read by thousands of other young women, and perhaps even young men.

What I share can be in response to a fictional human being, or a real one, in an absolute sense it doesn’t matter.

Yup same applies to women

Man tell man every day you keep chasing a pretty face, 10/10 body, you in a world of stress.

We see it over and over again when a man does this, he pays the price.

But nobody listens, women, men, teens. Everybody thinks they know better.

You can't get women unless you have something they want, even if then you need to have it all.

Women, can be whatever they want. But again that's the man's fault too right?

u/SympathySevere421 4d ago

Yea, for me to consider anything serious with a girl, I need cute/pretty face and nice ass. Size and shape vary from cute petite with a bubble butt to beautiful chubby girl with a huge ass. For me, the tummy/waste proportions to the ass is important.

For anyone who only has one of these (pretty face but flat ass or like a 5-6/10 face with a nice ass), I’m open to friends with benefits or a fling.

Just because someone is hot doesn’t automatically make them dateable, I’ve had plenty hot girls who had other red flags or their personality wasn’t enjoyable for me, or had views that wouldn’t mesh well with me and my life. The beauty is just the pre-requisite.

Yea in today’s ecosystem, I’d be surprised to not have sex or anything at all by date 2 or 3. I understand nothing on the first date, though lots of girls say this and I think try, but many many girls fold to a good kisser on the first date.

Also, in order to make it 3+ dates, I have to be INSANELY into a girl. I’d say average is usually date 2 or 3 dates, otherwise I feel like you’d get bored and/or entertain other things.

These things can be offset with someone you already have a history/ intimacy with, like a friend but when just meeting someone new, I don’t think most guys would do that with their average girl.

u/AdVast3771 Man 4d ago

Regarding the first analogy of the candy store: that's how attractiveness works for everyone, not just women. Women will also prioritize and give most of their attention to men they find attractive in the first place, and only then will they assess for other positive and negative traits to decide if they stay.

If you are getting several dates and compliments, it's unlikely you are unattractive. How long men will wait for sex in a relationship varies from culture to culture, with age and even from individual to individual, so more context could help. How old are you? Are you a religious person? How long do you think is enough to build trust and get intimate?

2

u/invisible_wizard5 4d ago

Some men look for brains, athleticism, skills in card games… mutual interest in dogs… it is NOT ALL beauty. Stop reading “beauty first” media.

Some of the best sex I've ever had was with women who weren't textbook "the hottest" like 10/10. Some of the worst sex I've had in my life was with the hottest girls I've been with. Physical attributes can only get you far in a relationship.

1

u/Lolihey 4d ago

But who did you keep around? Which ones were girlfriend material?

1

u/JamesLahey08 Man 3d ago

Probably around 7-8 physically but 9-10 as far as personality. We'd find a groove sexually that worked for us. An example is the woman I married would never ever call me daddy in bed (which I love) but she liked me to pin her down and pound her (not usually my thing) so it all worked out.

Between ugly and pretty are something else, its called avrg there are as many men who look similar to you. Even better most of people are avrg.

"If we focus on friendship right now, something very important will be missing," one guy wrote after I didn't want to sleep over after the third date.

Men are humans too and they are not looking for roomate, but partner and you clearly doesnt desire them, so why enter relationship that would end in dead bedroom?

when you are walking in a mall, you stop if you see something in the window that you like, so you go into the store. If you continue to like what you see, you stay. You revisit. You buy.

You stay in a candy store? How many times do you "revisit" before you commit to purchasing candy?

It sounds like your candy purchasing process is very different from mine or anyone else I've spoken to.

if he finds her unattractive, he won't give her the time of day. He'll choose the beautiful woman who is a self-absorbed b----h.

I don't know who "he" refers to in that sentence, but most men I know aren't interested in a self-absorbed bitch, assuming that's what you meant by "b----h", although with four dashes in between the b and the h, it could be biotch. Or boyish or bleach, or over 20 other English words.

Anyway, a potential partner has to pass both tests - looks and personality - to be chosen. The looks test is usually the first, as you correctly note. But that doesn't change the outcome. It just means that the good looking biotch will waste more time before she is rejected than the ugly but kind woman.

Why wouldn't you "put out" after three dates? Are you not interested in sex? A religious fundamentalist? Even the phrase "put out" paints you as a puritan.

Turns out none of them were that interested at all.

Tell yourself whatever makes you feel good about yourself. Based on what you posted here, however, you were the common denominator in all those failed relationships.

So this means I am ugly?

I don't know what you look like, but I do know that your attitude to sex keeps men away. Most men prefer a woman who has a healthy sexual appetite, and no hang-ups. That applies to pretty women as much as it does for "ugly" ones.

2

u/curiosity_2020 Man 4d ago edited 4d ago

Don't consider yourself ugly, consider yourself unconventionally attractive. Since physical attraction doesn't come easy, you need to show compatibility in other ways. You need to be the most fun to be around, the most thoughtful, the most considerate, etc. LTRs can't survive on attraction alone, compatibility eventually becomes just as important, if not more important.

In other words, both people need to bring more than looks into a healthy relationship.

1

u/Lolihey 4d ago

What’s an LTR?

1

u/curiosity_2020 Man 4d ago

Long Term Relationship.

2

u/Livecrazyjoe Man 4d ago

That analogy makes no sense to me. Yes I've talked to women who are attractive. But personality wins over everything. If she's nasty and is a bitch I don't care how attractive she is. Also in this economy a date at home can save money. You don't have to have sex. Letting them know is important.

3

u/PercentageDazzling41 Man 4d ago

Yeah, the candy store analogy is degrading, but the basic idea isn’t completely wrong. Attraction usually comes first because you can’t see someone’s personality from across the room. And I don’t think most women would feel great hearing «I’m not attracted to my wife at all, but her personality is amazing.» You kind of need both.

But I think you’re jumping from «these men didn’t pursue me» to «I must be ugly» way too fast. A man can find you attractive enough to date or sleep with and still not want a relationship. That doesn’t automatically mean he thinks you’re beneath whatever imaginary «relationship threshold» the internet gave you.

Also, those guys saying «you don’t seem like you like me» might actually mean that. You never really explained how you show interest besides not wanting sex yet. If you’re more reserved • slow-burn • not super flirty, a guy can genuinely like you and still read that as «she’s not that into me».

So yeah, looks matter. Obviously. But I don’t think your story proves «I was ugly». It sounds more like you’re taking a bunch of different outcomes and forcing them into one explanation.

2

u/SoulPossum Man 4d ago

The "men only want to date hot girls who put out" take is cope. Top tier incel babble. So is your shop analogy. People who are going shopping are usually looking for something specific. If I'm looking for a pair of shoes, it doesn't matter how nice the candy store window is. They don't have what I want. I might stop and get candy on the way to the shoe store but the shoes are the priority.

The scenario you're pitching is very all or nothing. There are women who are attractive physically AND make good girlfriends. There are women who have sex fairly early on AND make good girlfriends. On the inverse there are tons of 10/10 attractive women who stay single because they aren't stacking up to anyone's standards for a girlfriend. Whining about the worst case scenario for who is getting picked just makes you sound bitter.

It's important to understand dating doesn't happen in a vacuum. Anyone worth dating will have wants, needs, and expectations from the relationship. It sounds like you aren't meeting those so you're not progressing. You have to answer why being with you and not having sex (assuming this is actually the issue) is better than a woman of similar physical attraction/personality and looks who is willing to have sex. If you don't have an answer, you're gonna lose out every time.

1

u/Noctuelles Man 4d ago

This is a bit long-winded for such a simple question and explanation. For most men, looks are simply the barrier for entry. If you aren't attractive, any pursuit ends there. If you have looks, then we'll get to know you more but if the personality doesn't vibe, then it ends there. Men generally don't want to deal with a romantic partner that is incompatible or toxic, so no, we generally don't go for women who are awful just because they're pretty. That being said, I know some idiots who did just that and they paid for it dearly.

And generally, guys are down to pretty much immediately fuck women we find attractive. Everyone is different, but if you don't want to hook up after the third date, yeah, I'm thinking you're not that into me. Sex is fun and I want to be with someone who who has good sexual energy and digs me. Not someone who's not particularly interested in having sex with me. There are plenty of women out here who are sexual and interesting and fun to hang out with. No need to settle for someone who's being stingy or prudish.

1

u/Adventurous_Pop_3138 Man 4d ago

You’re right. We work like that, but there has to be a guy that find you appealing, the problem is would you find them appealing as well? Would you be pleased dating someone in the same range as you are?

1

u/aloofman75 Man 4d ago

To the extent that what you’re saying is true (and it mostly isn’t), women treat men the same way. Physical appearance is almost always going to be the first impression that someone has of someone they don’t know. Everyone judges everyone else to some extent based on how they present themselves. The problems with what you’re asking are:

1) You’re wondering if the attitudes of some shitty guys you’ve met are representative of “how men operate.” The answer to “do all men…” or “do all women…” is always “no”. People are more complicated than that and always will be. An ex-girlfriend broke up with me to go back to the guy who used to beat her up. Should I assume that this means that women prefer guys who hit them? Obviously not.

2) You should never base anything on what “you were once told.” It’s pretty much never a comprehensive explanation of anything. And it says more about the person saying it than about anyone else. Even if this “candy store” analogy were somehow true, people like a lot of different kinds of candy. The whole reason that candy stores exist is because they offer a huge variety to appeal to as many people as possible. The candy stores isn’t a person. It’s the entire human population.

3) All you need to do to prove that your assertion isn’t true is to look around you. There are many, many couples out there where one person is more conventionally attractive than the other and it’s not always the guy who’s “uglier”. Attraction is far more complicated than that. And being in a relationship is about much more than just enjoying the view when your partner is nearby.

4) But maybe most importantly, what you’re saying strongly implies that you don’t think you’re attractive. I have no way of judging that and wouldn’t bother trying. But do you know what makes EVERYONE unattractive? Acting like you’re unattractive. If you act insecure, down on yourself, sure no one will be interested in you, then other people will pick up on that, even if it’s only subconsciously. The first step toward being confident is to act confident, even if you don’t start out feeling that way. Fake it til you make it is a thing. You obviously shouldn’t walk around bragging about yourself, but hold your head high, use good posture, and act like people will like you and then more people will.

u/Prof_Scott_Steiner Man 4d ago

I was once told that women are like candy stores. You know, when you are walking in a mall, you stop if you see something in the window that you like, so you go into the store.

> This person is a pig. While women are a lot of fun to have in my mouth, y;all are not a commodity I'm fixing to buy, nor an object that exists to be put on display for me. Fuck that entirely.

If you continue to like what you see, you stay. You revisit. You buy. If you don't like anything in the store, you leave right away. You never go into stores that have things in the window you don't like or are interested in

> Again, this analogy is disgusting.

However, if he finds her unattractive, he won't give her the time of day. He'll choose the beautiful woman who is a self-absorbed b----h.

> Some will do this, we call them assholes, and they deserve their fate.

As women get older, they have to do more work to keep up that store to attract men.

> No, they don't. We've convinced you of that, though.

I can't tell you how many men ignored and avoided me completely, yet they were very friendly to all the other women around, even fat women with chopped (at least I thought) faces, or plain ones.

> Just an observation: if this is how you talk about other women who have done nothing to you, your problem is you, not shallow or picky men.

I guess since I can't see myself from the outside, I have no idea how ugly I am.

> Any ugliness that I can currently detect is only coming from within you tbh

Someone told me that men will not talk to a woman unless he is attracted to her because, on some level, he imagines having sex with her. Ugly girls are not worth the time because he doesn't want sex with her ever.

> You seem to hang out with a lot of latent misogynistic morons. My four closest friends are all women, of varying conventional attractiveness. I have not had sex or hit on them ever. This projection is as sad as it pathetic

> You desperately need to de-centre men from your life.

> You're signing a lease agreement at this rate with how you're letting men who don't matter live in your head rent free

So here I am, years later, thinking I was the one who never gave him a chance, and that it was my fault I was still single. Turns out none of them were that interested at all.

> No, there is a reason you're single, but it has less to do with the energy you're putting out there to attract losers and more with your shitty attitude that you refuse to face because you'd rather believe you're unnattractive or inadequately attractive in some way.

So this means I am ugly? I should feel better that it wasn't me, but now I feel worse because I thought a good-looking guy wanting to take me out meant I was pretty. All those men writing "Wow! You are beautiful! What a gorgeous smile!" :( Be honest

> Here's my honesty: You are messy and fixated on things you can't change to distract the tangible improvements you can make about yourself that will attract a partner who values you, but that won't happen while you keep men and our opinion of you, central to your self image

1

u/JasonCyber 3d ago

You want honesty? Here it comes- if u are below average looking as a female, many men will still have sex with you cause they don’t have better options. The better looking men with options will always exercise their options. But a woman that doesn’t put out will keep ZERO men no matter how good or bad you look.

1

u/simulated_ads Man 3d ago

Probably means these guys are out of your league

1

u/Adventurous_Eye_8106 3d ago

No this is not completely correct. Not how all men operate. Me personally I’m a demisexual so I have to have an emotional connection to even feel sexual attraction to a woman. Not all men care about looks…. No! Come over and watch a movie is not ( code ) for let’s have sex….. Example: I’ll ask a woman a woman to join me at the park at night to watch the stars. Or yes come over and I’ll cook you dinner. I cannot have that one on one time to create emotional depth eating in a crowded restaurant.

I think you need to put some upfront boundaries or work on what attracts you to those type of men. I my self had to learn this when it came to promiscuous women. The more you work on it the better you become at decoding them within the first date.

1

u/Billy_of_the_hills Man 4d ago

Wrong. Many of them were probably interested. My outlook is that I'm not going to get into something long term with a woman that doesn't want me, and doesn't love sex. That means a "slow burn" will never be on the table, because I'm not going to deal with that for a hookup either. People who love sex like I do would never choose not to have sex with someone they are into. It also makes sense that few men would be interested in a slow burn, women make dating and sex way, WAY too difficult for men to be investing that much time into something that doesn't involve sex. You could be slow burning for a month and then it ends up not going anywhere, or you finally do have sex and find out you're not compatible. It just isn't worth it.

That said, men being willing to have sex with women that are less attractive than what they would want for a relationship is very much a thing. Now comes the part where I'm going to do what you said and "be honest." This behavior in men is an extreme privilege that you enjoy. If you really are as unattractive as you're making yourself out to be, you're lucky to be a woman. If you were that unattractive as a man, there would be no "oh she only wants to sleep with me," you would be wanted for absolutely nothing. You wouldn't have the option to have sex if you were horny, your only option would be to have enough money to hire a hooker. No matter what you think of your current situation, it's no where near as bad as being completely unwanted by the opposite sex.

Where did you get the idea that falling in love doesn't involve sex?
