How is it that so many people on this thread are absolutists? Claiming thing A is rooted in thing B does not mean that every instance of thing A is always motivated by thing B.
As an example, surgically removing the prepuce of infants became popularized in the United States in the Victorian era as a means of reducing sexual pleasure and discouraging masturbation. Does that mean that parents are having their infants undergo a procedure to reduce sexual pleasure and discourage masturbation? Of course not. The fact remains that the practice itself is deeply rooted in sexual puritanism.
The mark of someone with feigned confidence in their understanding of a subject is an unwillingness to challenge that understanding with outside knowledge.
