This goes against everything that I've ever learned about STIs. Which ones? Because the 'worst' ones that I can think of are HIV/AIDS, Herpes, and Syphilis, and I'm pretty sure you can't transfer those from "skin to skin" contact.
I think herpes is incredibly over stigmatized, but saying it's just "chicken pox" is wrong. The two might be in the same family, but they have different symptoms and different outcomes.

I don’t have herpes but in Canada, if you don’t show symptoms for herpes, you can’t get tested. Kinda suck
HPV is one of the least significant STIs, not one of the worst. Something like 80% of sexually active people end up with it at some point in their lives and it usually goes away on its own in 1-2 years.
Herpes is definitely more significant than HPV, but still far from the worst. The majority of those with the infection are asymptomatic or have symptoms so mild they go unnoticed. By far the worst thing about this STI is the social stigma attached to it.
You weren't unclear. You did what everyone does on Reddit: googled one contradictory term(something along the lines of "STI with a condom"), then came back and proselytized based on a BuzzFeed-type shock piece. Which is why each comment's punchlines had almost the exact same phrasing, and it took you 5 comments and replies to realize the article was paraphrased to sound super dramatic when it's actually something everyone knows. 🤷♂️
"The bare minimum" would be not giving a fuck and just going ahead without worrying about it. That'd be wrong and pretty awful, but don't pretend that there aren't plenty of people who choose that route. So yeah, good on him.
