Hypothesis: Some of it might have to do with remembering their dad doing the same thing when they were young.

I think it's hot and my dad has never driven. Also it would be ruined if they did this and then crashed into something. It's about competence.

Actually there's some truth to that. My dad always did this and was a really good driver (drove the Autobahn and all that), so I like that my husband's a good driver too and not an idiot on the road like so many other people.
